For some their reintroduction to civilian life was straightforward and uneventful. Many simply returned to the jobs they had previously occupied before the war. For others their readjustment to civilian life was difficult, full of despair and bitter disappointment. Similarly, the repatriation, resettlement and rehabilitation of the empire's soldiers and sailors presented post-war administrations with a host of social, political and economic problems. So far as they were concerned reconstruction was a daunting challenge which had to be met with the greatest possible energy, efficiency and decisiveness.

  • Shaping the Public Memory of Sir John A. Macdonald in Ontario and Quebec, 1891-1967
The Old Chieftain’s New Image: Shaping the Public Memory of Sir John A. Macdonald in Ontario and Quebec, 1891-1967 by Yves Y. Pelletier A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada December 2010 Copyright © Yves Y. Pelletier, 2010 Abstract Sir John A. Macdonald has been a political figure frequently referenced in Canadian history. Yet no study has explored the evolution of his public memory. This study provides a focused examination of the attempts by Canada’s federal political parties to shape Macdonald’s public memory. The period of study began immediately following the death of Sir John A. Macdonald on June 6, 1891 and continued until the Centennial Celebrations of Confederation in 1967. The study first aims to identify and analyze events and activities organized or supported by Canada’s federal political class which provide opportunities to shape Macdonald’s public memory. The study then explores through the lens of official memory their motivation to engage in his commemoration and to shape his memory in specific ways. The objective of this study is to answer two specific research questions. The first asks if Canada’ federal political leaders were interested and successful in shaping Macdonald’s public memory during the period of study to allow the emergence of a seemingly national hegemonic figure acceptable to both political parties. The second asks if the federal political parties’ attempts to depict Macdonald as a unifying national symbol were picked up in the media in Ontario and Quebec and in both official languages, thereby reinforcing his hegemonic status for the federal political class.

  • The Habitus of Mackenzie King
The Habitus of Mackenzie King: Canadian Artists, Cultural Capital and the Struggle for Power Anton Reinhold Wagner A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Theatre and Performance Studies York University Toronto, Ontario, Canada September, 2014 © Anton Reinhold Wagner, 2014 Abstract This dissertation analyzes the struggle between William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada’s longest-serving Prime Minister (1922-1930, 1935-1948), and Canadian artists to define and determine the nature and distribution of arts and culture in Canada prior to the 1949 Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Letters and Sciences. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of habitus, “fields” of knowledge and power, and religious, social and cultural capital, the dissertation analyzes the central paradox of why—despite his decades-long involvement in half-a-dozen artistic disciplines—King failed to implement cultural policies as Prime Minister that would have benefited Canadian artists and the arts and culture in Canada. The dissertation applies Pierre Bourdieu’s model of social change in which “priests” with conservation strategies and charismatic “prophets” with subversion strategies compete among the “laity” for consumers of their respective symbolic goods to document how artists organized locally and nationally to accumulate social, cultural and political capital in their attempt to compel the federal government to implement their cultural objectives—state support for the arts. The dissertation posits that Mackenzie King’s inability to control his sexual impulses led him to espouse a conception of art whose primary function was to project Christian character and ideals.

  • 103 FEDERAL INFLUENCES on the CANADIAN CABINET. The
103 FEDERAL INFLUENCES ON THE CANADIAN CABINET. The preamble of the British North America Act recites the desire of the provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick to be federally united, into one dominion, under the Crown of the United Kingdom and Ireland, with a constitution similar in principle to that of the United Kingdom. Although points of resemblance to the constitution of the United Kingdom are evident in various sections of the British North America Act, there can be no doubt that the primary intention of the Quebec and London Conferences was to re- produce within the framework of federal institutions in Canada the cabinet system of Great Britain, this being recognized as the chief distinguishing feature of the English constitution, "the true centre of gravity" as Gladstone one described it "for the working system of the state." The establishment of the Dominion of Canada marked the first attempt to apply the principles of the cabinet system within the structure of a federal constitution? In other federal constitutions, notably that of the United States, it had been the practice to provide for the. composition of the execu- tive, its powers, and its relations in the explicit terms of the written instrument. In the Canadian federation the statutory provisions for the executive branch of, government were - meagre and indefinite . In the express terms of the British North America Act, the executive government and authority of and over Canada was declared to con- tinue and be vested in the Queen, aided and advised by a council without limit of numbers to be styled the Queen's Privy Council for, Canada, the members of which were to be chosen by the Governor- General, acting on behalf and in the name of the Queen, and to be removed by him when occasion demanded.

It seeks to answer this question by examining democratic discourses propagated by national political parties during the key years of 1919–1940. In particular, it focuses on the role of the Liberal Party of Canada and its leader William Lyon Mackenzie King in advancing a certain set of democratic discourses as a means of responding to specific challenges the party faced during these years.
