  • Blue Flags for Lough Derg and Burren Passport
Blue Flags for Lough Derg and Burren Passport Monday, 9 June 08 An Taisce has awarded the prestigious International Blue Flag to eight of County Clare’s beaches. Mountshannon and Ballycuggeran on Lough Derg retained the Blue Flag status they lost in 2006 due to the presence of algal bloom in the lake while Cappa, Kilkee, White Strand (Miltown Malbay), Lahinch and Fanore have also held on to their Blue Flags. Meanwhile, Clare County Council has expressed its delight that White Strand (Doonbeg) regained its Blue Flag for 2008. Deputy Mayor of Clare, Councillor Brian Meaney, today collected all eight flags at a ceremony in County Louth. Speaking following today's awards ceremony, Cllr Tommy Brennan,Chairof Clare County Council's Environment, Emergency Services and Consumer Protection Strategic Policy Committee said, 'I am delighted that Clare has secured eight Blue Flags this year. I especially welcome the fact that White Strand, Doonbeg regained its Blue Flag Status. This loss in 2007 was not because of inadequate bathing water quality but due to necessary access works at the beach, which Clare County Council has since successfully completed.' Cllr. Brennan indicated that the awarding of Blue Flags to eight Clare beaches was achieved through the hard work of local communities and Local Authority staff. 'Again, it is further proof of what the county can achieve when Clare Local Authorities and members of the public work together', he added. According to Sean Ward, Senior Engineer, Environment & Emergency Services Directorate, "Clare County Council is extremely happy with the eight blue flags achieved, especially the re-awarding of White Strand, Doonbeg, which is a reflection of the positive actions taken by Clare County Council at this beach to improve access." The Blue Flag award is an exclusive eco-label awarded to more than 3,000 beaches and marinas in 28 countries in the Northern Hemisphere each year.

  • Ennis Cathedral
Ennis Cathedral: The Building & Its People. Saturday 29th. August 2009 Presented by the Clare Roots Society Clare Roots Society The Clare Roots Society, brainchild of Ennisman Larry Brennan, was formed in April 2006 as an amateur family history group. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and has approx. 50 members. Anyone with an interest in tracing their family tree is welcome to join. Some members are experienced genealogists while others are novices in the field. In addition to local members, we have some 'virtual' members who live overseas, but who follow our activities via email, and dream that they are in Clare. Activities are advertised in local press and in the Ennis Cathedral church bulletin. Under the Chairmanship of Declan Barron and his committee of Fiona de Buitleir, Eric Shaw, Larry Brennan & Paddy Waldron, guest speakers were arranged at past meetings including Paul O’Donnell of the South Galway genealogy group, Peter Beirne of 'The Manse' Local Studies library in Ennis, Jim Herlihy on the RIC, Liam Curran on Irish Soldiers in the British Army, Jonny Dillon of the Folklore Dept., UCD, and Dr. Pat Nugent of the University of Liverpool amongst others. From our own members, speakers have included Dr. Paddy Waldron, Gerry Kennedy, Ger Madden, Declan Barron, Eric Shaw, Robert Cullen, and Larry Brennan. In addition, we have run a number of hands-on computer workshops on genealogical research and the recording of data. The society works in partnership with Clare County Library in order to add to the wonderful fund of genealogy information already available on their website www.clarelibrary.ie Our biggest project to date, completed in 2008 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland, involved transcription of the gravestones in the old Drumcliffe Cemetery.

  • Belonging in the Ocean: Surfing, Ocean Power, and Saltwater Citizenship in Ireland
David Whyte: Belonging in the Ocean: Surfing, ocean power, and saltwater citizenship in Ireland Belonging in the Ocean: Surfing, ocean power, and saltwater citizenship in Ireland David Whyte Ballyhoura Development, [email protected] Abstract In 2016, the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in southwest Ireland sought per- mission to erect a boulder wall along the entire length of a beach to protect its golf course from erosion. This beach happens to be home to a good-quality surf break and, accord- ingly, local and international surfers quickly mobilised resistance to the plan. This paper investigates how Irish surfers’ relationship with different water flows have been (re)pro- ducing and transforming these political narratives, both in relation to this dispute and in the State more generally in the 2014-2018 period. Through their politicised associations with waves, Irish surfers enact “saltwater citizenship”, a political status that grounds its legitimacy not only on its relationship with state power but also (and primarily) with ocean power. I explore how this specific form of citizenship has three defining features: 1) It multiplies authorities of political legitimation; 2) its struggles against Irish state-cor- porate entanglements take place predominantly as right-of-access and right-of-ownership disputes; 3) because it is based on surf-specific notions of belonging and relies on con- temporary global flows of information and people, it disarticulates and reconfigures ele- ments of citizenship (territoriality and entitlements, for instance) in ways that complicate traditional distinctions between localism and cosmopolitanism. KEYWORDS: Ireland, saltwater citizenship, surfing, water, belonging Introduction During the winter of 2013/2014, the West of Ireland experienced a particularly intense storm season.

  • Survey of the Mcinerney Sept of Thomond (Download PDF)
SURVEY OF THE McINERNEY SEPT OF THOMOND Luke McInerney, M.A. This survey gives an historical account of the McInerney sept of Clann Chuiléin, the eastern division of County Clare. The survey investigates the genealogical origins of the McInerneys in twelfth century Thomond as an offshoot of the ruling McNamaras. The origins of the McInerneys as an airchinneach family of east Clare is explored and the survey looks at the history of the sept up to the confiscation of the sept’s lands in the mid-seventeenth century and their scattering into Limerick and Tipperary during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The survey attempts to give an overview of the McInerney family of Thomond and to redress the silence in many histories of County Clare about the family and its origins. It is a curious tenet of history that the McInerneys were almost totally dispossessed of their ancient lands, so it is not surprising that they escaped the historian’s pen. I intend for this survey to shed light on their history both before and after the collapse of the Gaelic order. Research indicates that the McInerneys – Clann an Oirchinnigh – of Thomond have been associated with their powerful overlords, the McNamaras (Mac Con Mara), since the twelfth century. It was from the main dynastic branch of the McNamaras that the progenitor of the McInerney sept, Donnchadha Mac Con Mara, originated. As a junior sept – or sliocht – the McInerneys retained an important position at the local level within the McNamara polity of Clann Chuiléin and their role as minor gentry found them scribed alongside the powerful Dromoland O’Briens in land and rental documents beyond the collapse of the Gaelic order into the eighteenth century.
