MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series
MCA 700 Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series: By the time the reissue series reached MCA-700, most of the ABC reissues had been accomplished in the MCA 500-600s. MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. After several issues, he welcomed contributions from the staff, and Don Gold and I began. to contribute regularly. After Jack left, I inherited Crater's column and wrote it, with occasional contributions from Don and Jack Tynan, until I found that the well was running dry. Don and I wrote it some more and then Crater sort of passed from the scene, much like last year's favorite soloist. One other thing: I think Bill Crow will be delighted to learn that the picture of Billie Holiday he so admired on the cover of the Decca Billie Holiday memo• rial album was taken by Tony Scott. Writing Communities: Aesthetics, Politics, and Late Modernist Literary Consolidation
WRITING COMMUNITIES: AESTHETICS, POLITICS, AND LATE MODERNIST LITERARY CONSOLIDATION by Elspeth Egerton Healey A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (English Language and Literature) in the University of Michigan 2008 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor John A. Whittier-Ferguson, Chair Associate Professor Kali A. K. Israel Associate Professor Joshua L. Miller Assistant Professor Andrea Patricia Zemgulys © Elspeth Egerton Healey _____________________________________________________________________________ 2008 Acknowledgements I have been incredibly fortunate throughout my graduate career to work closely with the amazing faculty of the University of Michigan Department of English. I am grateful to Marjorie Levinson, Martha Vicinus, and George Bornstein for their inspiring courses and probing questions, all of which were integral in setting this project in motion. The members of my dissertation committee have been phenomenal in their willingness to give of their time and advice. Kali Israel’s expertise in the constructed representations of (auto)biographical genres has proven an invaluable asset, as has her enthusiasm and her historian’s eye for detail. Beginning with her early mentorship in the Modernisms Reading Group, Andrea Zemgulys has offered a compelling model of both nuanced scholarship and intellectual generosity. Joshua Miller’s amazing ability to extract the radiant gist from still inchoate thought has meant that I always left our meetings with a renewed sense of purpose. I owe the greatest debt of gratitude to my dissertation chair, John Whittier-Ferguson. His incisive readings, astute guidance, and ready laugh have helped to sustain this project from beginning to end. The life of a graduate student can sometimes be measured by bowls of ramen noodles and hours of grading. -

WORKING CLASS EXPRESSION THROUGH KARAOKE SONG SELECTION Mark T. Gerolami a Thesis Submitted To
"I LOVE THIS BAR": WORKING CLASS EXPRESSION THROUGH KARAOKE SONG SELECTION Mark T. Gerolami A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2007 Committee: David Harnish, Advisor Steven Cornelius ii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor This thesis probes the meaning and processes of karaoke song selection at Whiskey Dick’s, a working-class bar in Bowling Green, Ohio. Through research, observations, and interviews conducted from 2005 to 2006, it examines how working-class identity manifests itself in karaoke song selection. As part of positioning the author into the study, I introduce my own background and discuss my history with both karaoke music and working-class culture. An analysis of a single night at Whiskey Dick’s creates a framework for specific observations and gives the reader greater context, while the lengthy enthnography provides for more generalized observations. In interviews and discussions with the singers I attempt to uncover the meaning behind each song selected, discovering how conscious singers are of their choices. For some participants my research eventually impacted how they pick songs thus raising issues of intrusion by the ethnomusicologist. I examine several of the most popular songs at Whiskey Dick’s and analyze the lyrics of each, focusing on class representation within the lyrics. In addition, the difficulties of speaking about music and our musical preferences are explored and discussed in reference to the singers at Whiskey Dick’s. iii This thesis is dedicated to everyone who enjoys making music a part of life. -

“THE STEP OF IRON FEET”: FORMAL MOVEMENTS IN AMERICAN WORLD WAR II POETRY by RACHEL LYNN EDFORD A DISSERTATION Presented to the Department of English and the Graduate School of the University of Oregon in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2011 DISSERTATION APPROVAL PAGE Student: Rachel Lynn Edford Title: “The Step of Iron Feet”: Formal Movements in American World War II Poetry This dissertation has been accepted and approved in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Department of English by: Karen Jackson Ford Chairperson John Gage Member Paul Peppis Member Cecilia Enjuto Rangel Outside Member and Kimberly Andrews Espy Vice President for Research & Innovation/Dean of the Graduate School Original approval signatures are on file with the University of Oregon Graduate School. During the Second World War, the Holocaust and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki obliterated the line many WWI poems reinforced between the soldier’s battlefront and the civilian’s homefront, authorizing for the first time both civilian and soldier perspectives. Conditions on the American homefront—widespread isolationist and anti-Semitic attitudes, America’s late entry into the war, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese internment, and the African American “Double V Campaign” to fight fascism overseas and racism at home—were just some of the volatile conditions poets in the US grappled with during WWII. -

There are Literally hundreds upon hundreds of great titles. If you would like to order from this newsletter you can email, phone or post an order. If phoning please feel free to call after hours From 8.00am up until 7.00pm is fine. I have a couple of pieces of bad news. Firstly my dear mum, Rose Reid, passed away on February 23rd. Many knew her as she worked Wednesdays at the old Parramatta store from 1990-2000 and filled in when I went on buying trips. It has been a trying period but I can honestly say she loved her time in the shop especially meeting and talking to many fine people and was a keen music buff, something that has passed on through the genes. Secondly, we lost a dear friend in Norm Pyne. Many who went to the Parramatta store would have seen a blind guy getting round with only a cane. My admiration for Norm was limitless. I never considered him handicapped in any way and he was always thankful for his independence. It is a sad irony of life that it is probably this independence which saw him involved in an horrific accident which cost him his life. -
