Uncovering the Anti-Queer Sentiment in the Dianetic Perspective At present, there is a groundswell of public sensational interest in the subject of Scientology; and, in fact, in the time since I began this research paper, a nine-episode documentary series has premiered and reached finale on A&E titled “Scientology and the Aftermath”— a personal project hosted by sitcom celebrity, ex-Scientologist, and author of Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Leah Remini.1 I could not begin to enumerate the myriad exposés/memoirs of ex-Scientologists that have been published in recent years nor could I emphasize enough the rampant conspiracy theories that are at the disposal of any curious mind on what many have termed “the cult” of Scientology. -

chapter 5 Danish Dianetics: Scholarship in the Church of Scientology in Scandinavia Kjersti Hellesøy and James R. Lewis L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, began establishing the Church of Scientology (CoS) outside of the United States when he established a center in Dublin in 1956. He later moved his headquarters to Saint Hill near East Grinstead, Sussex, in England in 1959. Though French Scientologists had estab- lished an early organization in Paris during the same year, the church that was opened in Copenhagen in June of 1968 became the center of Scientology activ- ities in continental Europe. Scientology was introduced into Sweden as well in 1968. This was well before “New Religious Movements” became established as a distinct field of study. As a consequence, it would be more than a dozen years before Scandinavian academicians turned their attention to CoS. When they did, it was Danish researchers who took the lead, in part because of the prox- imity of the major Scientology center to the University of Copenhagen in the country’s capital. In this chapter, we will survey the scholarship that has been produced on Scientology in Scandinavia, emphasizing Danish contributions. Denmark Merethe Sundby-Sørensen The study of Scientology in Denmark started after the Church asked Arild Hvidtfeldt, then Professor of Sociology of Religion at the University of Copenhagen, to make a statement for one of their court cases. Hvidtfeldt sub- sequently introduced another sociologist of religion at Copenhagen, Merethe Sundby-Sørensen, to Scientology. Sundby-Sørensen followed up by conducting two surveys of Danish Scientologists in 1982 and 1992, and was preparing a third when she died from a heart attack in 1997.1 Peter B. -

ORIGIN OF SCIENTOLOGY May 22, 2019 1. Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, born in Tilden, Nebraska in 1911, was an American author of science fiction and fantasy stories. In 1950, Hubbard authored a book entitled Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and established a series of organizations to promote Dianetics. In 1952, Hubbard lost the rights to Dianetics in bankruptcy proceedings, and he subsequently founded Scientology. 2. Dianetics (from the Greek dia, meaning "through", and nous, meaning “mind”) is a set of ideas and practices regarding the metaphysical relationship between the mind and body. Dianetics is practiced by followers of Scientology, the Nation of Islam (as of 2010), and other independent groups. Dianetics divides the mind into three parts: A) the conscious "analytical mind" B) the subconscious "reactive mind” C) the somatic mind “pertaining to the body” The goal of Dianetics is to erase the content of the "reactive mind", which Scientologists believe interferes with a person's ethics, awareness, happiness, and sanity. 1. As Hubbard oversaw the growth of the Church of Scientology into a worldwide organization, he was cited by Smithsonian magazine as one of the 100 most significant Americans of all time. Hubbard died in 1986. BELIEFS/PRACTICES OF SCIENTOLOGY 1. The Church of Scientology says that a human is an immoral, spirit being they refer to as the thetan. The thetan is a resident in a physical body. The thetan has had innumerable past lives and it is observed in advanced Scientology texts that lives preceding the thetan's arrival on Earth were lived in extraterrestrial cultures. -

GERMANY Executive Summary The Basic Law and other laws and policies protect religious freedom and, in practice, the government generally respected religious freedom. The government did not demonstrate a trend toward either improvement or deterioration in respect for and protection of the right to religious freedom. The government made efforts to improve the integration of Muslims and other minorities into society, investigated and prosecuted criminal behavior against religious groups, and promoted tolerance education. There were, however, individual reports expressing concerns regarding governmental (federal and state) treatment of some religious minorities, notably Scientologists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Muslims. There were reports of societal abuses based on religious affiliation, belief, or practice. Right-wing groups and Muslim youth from immigrant backgrounds committed politically motivated crimes against some minority religious groups. Some Jewish cemeteries were desecrated, and individuals from Muslim communities sometimes suffered societal discrimination. The Roman Catholic and Protestant churches continued to use “sect commissioners” to warn the public of alleged dangers from some minority religious groups such as the Unification Church, Scientologists, Universelles Leben (Universal Life), and Transcendental Meditation practitioners. Scientologists continued to find that “sect filters” were used to discriminate against them in education, employment, and political party membership. A sect filter is defined as a written agreement a new employee has to sign stating that he or she has no contact with Scientology, has not participated in its training courses, and rejects its doctrines. Prominent societal leaders, however, took positive steps to promote religious freedom and tolerance. Many members of civil society, such as members of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, members of the Turkish community, and members of prominent Jewish organizations, initiated discussions regarding Muslim integration and expressed commitment to that process. -

CAROLYN EVANS Religion and the Secular State in Australia I. SOCIAL CONTEXT Australia is a predominantly Christian country, however, in recent years there has been a strong growth in groups that describe themselves as not having a religion and in religious minorities including Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists. At the 2006 census date, Christians represented 63.9 percent of the population, non-Christian believers represented 6.2 percent (corresponding to over 120 different religious denominations of 250 or more followers), and the remaining 30 percent either stated that they had no religion or declined to state their religion. Forty-four and one-half percent of the Australian population reported that their religion was either Anglican or Catholic, whilst the largest non- Christian religion represented was Buddhism, with 2.1 percent of the population.1 II. THEORETICAL AND SCHOLARLY CONTEXT Australia became a federated nation in 1901 with the coming into effect of the Australian Constitution. Since that time (and indeed for most of the period of white colonization), Australia has been a broadly secular State with Christian influences on law and politics. Section 116 of the Constitution (discussed further below) prohibits the Commonwealth level of government from establishing a religion and, despite no equivalent existing in most State constitutions, no State government has an established religion or is likely to do so. Nevertheless, Christianity remains the dominant religion and elements of Australia’s Christian heritage can be seen in areas such as the reciting of Christian prayers at the opening of parliament2 and the maintenance of Sunday as the most common day of rest.3 Australia is not a particularly religious country compared to many and religion has rarely played a critical role in public life or debates. -

Present Pasts, 7(1): 2, pp. 1–10, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/pp.73 RESEARCH PAPER Lucifer Over Luxor: Archaeology, Egyptology, and Occultism in Kenneth Anger’s Magick Lantern Cycle Ethan Doyle White* One of the great figureheads of American experimental cinema, Kenneth Anger (b.1927), is internationally renowned for his pioneering work, recognisable for its blend of homoerotica, popular and classical music, and dark, symbolist imagery. A follower of Thelema, the religion of infamous British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), Anger’s work is imbued with occult themes and undercurrents rarely comprehen- sible to the non-initiated viewer. In exploring these esoteric ideas, Anger makes use of archaeology and heritage in his short filmsEaux d’Artifice (1953) and Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954–66), as well as in the lost films The Love That Whirls (1949) and Thelema Abbey (1955), which utilize such disparate elements as Aztec human sacrifice and putative Renaissance Satanism. However, this theme only reaches its apex in Lucifer Rising (1980), an exploration of Thelemic theology filmed at such sites as Avebury, Luxor, and Karnak, which reflects and propagates the Thelemic view of the past—an ‘alternative archaeology’ rooted in Crowley’s own fascination with Egyptomania. This paper seeks to explore Anger’s use of the past and place it in its proper context of twentieth-century Western esotericism. Kenneth Anger (b.1927) is one of the foremost figures of through the transformation of individual consciousness American experimental cinema, an artist who produced via artistic mediums (Hughes 2011: 12). -

SHOULD GERMANY STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE OCTOPUS? FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY IN GERMANY AND THE UNITED STATES Religion hides many mischiefs from suspicion.' I. INTRODUCTION Recently the City of Los Angeles dedicated one of its streets to the founder of the Church of Scientology, renaming it "L. Ron Hubbard Way." 2 Several months prior to the ceremony, the Superior Administrative Court of Miinster, Germany held that Federal Minister of Labor Norbert Bluim was legally permitted to continue to refer to Scientology as a "giant octopus" and a "contemptuous cartel of oppression." 3 These incidents indicate the disparity between the way that the Church of Scientology is treated in the United States and the treatment it receives in Germany.4 Notably, while Scientology has been recognized as a religion in the United States, 5 in Germany it has struggled for acceptance and, by its own account, equality under the law. 6 The issue of Germany's treatment of the Church of Scientology has reached the upper echelons of the United States 1.
