Abbatiello’s love for horses has resulted in nearly 60 years dedicated to the horse racing industry. For 28 years, Mr. Abbatiello served the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey, both as a Co-Founder and as President. Mr. Abbatiello’s previous titles included, Chairman of the Board for the United States Trotting Association, Director of the Standardbred Owners’ Association of New York, Chairman of the New Jersey Sire Stakes Board of Directors, Trustee Chairman of the Board of American Horse Council in Washington D.C. and Trustee of the Trotting Horse Museum in Goshen, New York. On July 2, 1995, Mr. Abbatiello was inducted into the Living Hall of Fame in Goshen, New York with his brother Carmine, a 1985 inductee. His induction resulted in the first brother tandem in the Hall of Fame. A decorated war veteran, Mr. Abbatiello served in the Korean War rising to the rank of Captain. Mr. Abbatiello demonstrated courage under fire, receiving numerous commendations including the Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, The Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, the Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Campaign Ribbon with four Battle Stars and the Korean Service Medal. Law School Student Scholarship. 837. https://scholarship.shu.edu/student_scholarship/837 INTERNET, SPORTS AND GAMBLING NEW JERSEY’S BERMUDA TRIANGLE By: Nicholas Waltman Gambling is defined as risking money or something of value on the outcome of an event involving chance when probability of winning or losing is less than certain. 1 For something to be considered gambling it must have three elements which are prize chance and consideration. 2 A prize is exactly what is says, a prize/money to win. Chance is there must be a chance to win or lose. And consideration is for example you pay money to try and win the prize. If skill dominates over chance, then it is not gambling. 3 This is important to note because it will discussed in more detail later. Since the official legalization of gambling in 1931 there has been an explosion of gambling opportunities for the public. From commercial casinos to lottery tickets to off-track betting, it is easier to gamble today than ever before. 4 In the last year Americans have wagered over a trillion dollars in the United States. 5 Over eighty-five percent of this wagering took place in casinos which are now legal in twenty-seven states.

Rutgers Equine Science Center 2009 Impact of Slot Machines/Video Lottery Terminals Executive Summary The New Jersey equine industry is valued at $4 billion and generates $1.1 billion annually in positive impact on the New Jersey economy, is responsible for 13,000 jobs (7,000 jobs generated by racetracks and horse racing breeding and training operations), and pays an estimated $160 million annually in federal, state, and local taxes ($85 million generated by equine operations and owners and $75 million generated by New Jersey racetracks). Contributing to the total economic impact are New Jersey’s four racing venues (The Meadowlands, Freehold Raceway, Monmouth Park Racetrack, and Atlantic City Race Course), valued at $502 million annually. Regarding acres, 176,000 total acres support equine facilities; 96,000 of these acres are directly related to equine activities, 78,000 are devoted to pasture and hay production, with 46,000 additional acres producing hay for horses on non-equine-related operations. Equine-related acres represent more than one-fifth of the state's 790,000 acres in agriculture. Regarding animals and operations, 42,500 equine animals are housed in New Jersey at 7,200 facilities. Of the 42,500 equine animals, 12,500 (nearly 30 percent) are in racing-related activities.
