Road tripping is entirely flexible—no timetable, no deadlines, no schedule. You can take that detour you’ve always wanted to and find new places to picnic, hike, ride, or simply rest. The Parkland has a ton of hidden gems perfect for a day on the backroads with your camera and a good buddy or two. 4 Visit Dauphin | 2018 Visitors Guide Light Painting Photography Kyle Schappert has been creating light painting images since the summer of 2014. He first gained an interest in the genre soon after learning long exposure photography from friend and photographer Joel Boily. He started creating various shapes using sparklers and flashlights and later began experimenting with burning steel wool and magnesium. “I’ve spent countless hours lurking in the middle of the night, searching for new locations to practice my craft and bring new perspectives to light through the art of steel wool and light painting photography”. Kyle’s brand of steel wool photography garnered much attention from local media in Winnipeg and also landed him a feature back in April of 2015 in Maclean’s Magazine. Later in 2016, Kyle purchased a set of custom light painting tools including a saber and fiber optic brush. He crossed paths with another Winnipeg light painter, Kevin Dowd, and they’ve been collaborating extensively over the past several months, perfecting various methods with a wide array of specialized gear. dauphin.ca 5 EARLY MORNINGS & LATE NIGHTS by Kyle Schappert The R.M of Dauphin provides plenty of beautiful backdrops and scenes to discover for a photography enthusiast such as myself, from Lake Dauphin to Riding Mountain National Park and the miles upon miles of rustic farmland in between. The following photos represent a few of my fondest moments while travelling around the R.M. b d c e 6 Visit Dauphin | 2018 Visitors Guide f g HWY 20 N. b Sunrise at Rainbow Beach – Early Morning Light. Date of sunrise: October 7th. I much enjoyed watching the sunrise on the shore of Lake Dauphin at Rainbow Beach. The vibrant colors reflected marvelously off RAINBOW BEACH the water and I couldn’t think of a more therapeutic place to drink my morning coffee. c Sunrise at Rainbow Beach – Visit from a Willet. Moments before the peak of the rising sun, I received a pleasant visit from a willet. The bird KM 49 was busy in search for breakfast. At this point, a rainbow-like spectrum of colors filled the sky and how fitting being a Rainbow Beach. d Sunrise at Rainbow Beach – The First Sun Peak. The sun was running a little later than expected due to some cloud cover but the first peak MOON LAKE marvelously made up for lost time. I was preoccupied checking out some interesting shapes of driftwood on shore when the first rays of lights began to shine through the clouds. e Morning Take-Off. I was driving down Hwy 20 just North of Dauphin when I spotted a couple large gaggles of snow geese in a nearby field. This was my first time seeing such large groups of snowbirds in person and I found the sight awe-inspiring, especially when hundreds of the birds took flight in unison. That’s a moment I’d like to recreate in the future for sure! f One Night at KM 49 – Northern Lights. I visited the KM 49 site just minutes from Dauphin going south on Hwy. 10. What a great view of the sky! I thought I was in the market for a night of stargazing but the sky over the mountain surprised me with the Northern Lights. g One Night at KM49 – The Milky Way. You can clearly see the night sky from all angles at KM 49. I was sitting in one of the chairs watching h the Northern Lights towards the north and by the time I moved out of the chair, you could see the Milky Way to the south. That’s what I call 360 degrees of beauty! i h Moon Lake Madness – If You Wish Upon a Star. Moon Lake is another great spot where I spent a couple late nights enjoying the company of the stars, and it’s just up the road from KM 49. There’s nothing but the sights and sounds of Mother Nature surrounding you, and if you’re lucky you might even see a shooting star… i Moon Lake Madness – Illuminated Fog. I have grown to love exploring the mysteries of the night at Moon Lake. When the fog rolls, everything starts looking mystical, almost like you could be in a different world. Am I dreaming? My imagination is always at work when I’m at Moon Lake. dauphin.ca 7 HIKE & BIKE Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP) is a unique mix of habitats characteristic of eastern, western, and northern Canada.
