(See page 4.) Spring Weekend Workshops. See also the Flyer at the end of this issue. We like to give you an idea of what to expect for the coming weekend. For example, since Ralph will be doing some Banjo Workshops, bring those !!! Remember there are often changes made to the workshops offered and campers are also encour- aged to conduct workshops. So consider this is a sampling of the weekend. Ralph Bodington will be presenting Southern Mtn. Ballads, mostly from the Appa- lachians, learned from the singing of Frank Proffitt, Tommy Jarrell, , and many more. He will also be doing Banjo Tunes and Songs learned from recordings and concerts from the likes of , Peter Hoover, Reed Martin, Dwight Diller, just to name a few. Bring those banjos for his instructional workshops, (basic clawhammer West Virginia style) and to on reading tabs, learning some useful licks and working on a very simple tune from West Virginia. Ted Crane is our dance caller. His characteristic style, a high-energy fusion of dry New England calls with lively, rapid patter, follows the flow of the music as it fuels the dancers. Aside from the dances, his workshop will be about “Connecting the Figures in Contra Dance”. Things go more smoothly when you anticipate and prepare for your next dance move. Paul Kaplan’s workshops will include Music Theory for Folk Musicians, Songs from A Bonnie Bunch of Roses, the book that he and Dan Milner put out, and the Folk Process, songs that he reworked from older songs (“I Had an Old Coat” from “I Had a Little Overcoat,” “Henry the Accountant” from “John Henry,” etc.), singing part or all of the originals. Sharon Katz is from South Africa, will do workshops on South African Songs and Dance, South African Freedom Music and the role of The Peace Train (a group she created) in the transition from apartheid to a new South Africa. Heather Wood has a wide range of knowledge and songs and will do workshops about Kipling and the difference between choruses and refrains. - 8 - For addresses, times, phone numbers, and other details, see the location information on the pages following this listing.
