They have involved The Observer in their ongoing quest to forget the existence of the group known as Gays and Lesbians at Notre Dame Alison Cocks and Saint Mary's. Editor-in-Chief Specifically, they object to certain aspects of the group's ad campaign: the use of copyrighted symbols such as the Dome and any language which implies they are an organized, recognized group. The group's name is also cause for consternation, as it suggests a closer tie to the University than the administration deems comfortable. Notre Dame chooses not to recognize a homosexual organization. Therefore, the Office of Student Affairs informed me, they do not want to see ads in the student newspaper which might imply to 'outsiders' that this TODAY AT AGLANCE group is affiliated with the University. They haven't forbidden the group to advertise in WORLD INDIANA The Observer, but the aforementioned aspects of their ads are now taboo. CHAPTER SIX The Pleasure Principle CHAPTER SEVEN Here There Be Dragons ACKNOWLEDGMENTS NOTES BIBLIOGRAPHY INDEX 4 INTRODUCTION Sexual Disorientation Every time I go to the doctor, I end up questioning my sexual orientation. On some of its forms, the clinic I visit includes five little boxes, a small matter of demographic bookkeeping. Next to the boxes are the options “gay,” “lesbian,” “bisexual,” “transgender,” or “heterosexual.” You’re supposed to check one. You might not think this would pose a difficulty. I am a fairly garden-variety female human being, after all, and I am in a long-term monogamous relationship, well into our second decade together, with someone who has male genitalia. But does this make us, or our relationship, straight? This turns out to be a good question, because there is more to my relationship—and much, much more to heterosexuality—than easily meets the eye. There’s biology, for one thing. My partner was diagnosed male at birth because he was born with, and indeed still has, a fully functioning penis. But, as the ancient Romans used to say, barba non facit philosophum—a beard does not make one a philosopher. Neither does having a genital outie necessarily make one male. Indeed, of the two sex chromosomes—XY—which would be found in the genes of a typical male, and XX, which is the hallmark of the genetically typical female—my partner’s DNA has all three: XXY, a pattern that is simultaneously male, female, and neither.

General Narrative Although European settlers had encountered the region on prior occasions, legend grants September 14, 1609, a day of particular reckoning in Westchester County history: the day Henry Hudson left anchorage at Spuyten Duyvil and traveled almost the entire Westchester shore.1 Others followed— especially from the Netherlands, whose traders took advantage of the rich flora and fauna of the land.2 Piece by piece, European explorers mapped and explored its features. For example, in 1614, Dutch explorer Adriaen Block became the first European mariner to enter the Long Island Sound.3 For a time, the Dutch West India Company maintained (on paper, at least) exclusive trade privileges on the shore of the Hudson.4 The first English vessel, meanwhile, arrived in 1619.5 Attempts to establish formal settlements in the region were slow in coming.

THE FIXER: JOURNALIST. PRIVATE EYE. MOLE. SNITCH. IT’S ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR MARTY BERGMAN, THE ZELIG OF NEW YORK’S INFORMATION HIGHWAY The Village Voice William Bastone December 19, 1995 Long before Marty Bergman emerged as New York’s premier agent provocateur, a shadowy figure scrounging and hawking information with the verve of a street peddler, he exhibited a deep awareness of self. Employed as a lowly surveyor with the Department of Public Works in Suffolk County, Bergman knew that his true strength did not lie in the mundane task of tracking sewer lines and mapping municipal minutiae. Chatting one day in December 1980 with a local legislator, the voluble Bergman delivered an unusually succinct assessment of his secret virtue. Unaware that his companion was wearing a concealed recording device and saving his words for posterity, Bergman was blunt but not boastful: “You know,” he told the politician, “I know how to destroy people.” In the insular world inhabited by the city’s top politicians, journalists, investigators, and lawyers, Bergman is a singular presence. Equal part private eye, reporter, mole, media manipulator, and snitch, Bergman is the Zelig of New York’s power alleys, a six-foot- three-inch ghost in the machine wearing a trench coat and his trademark midnight shades. Powered by an extensive network of contacts, Bergman makes a living brokering--and sometimes selling--information. For him, it is as much an obsession as a profession: according to one acquaintance, nothing is more satisfying for Bergman than “finding dirt on people.” To that end, Bergman operates like a door-to-door salesman, offering documents, rumors, tips, and access to a client list that has included politicians, FBI agents, law firms, newspapers, and TV shows ranging from 60 Minutes to A Current Affair.

SHE JUST SNAPPED: REALITY TELEVISION, MURDER AND THE MYTH OF FEMININE EVIL by Megan Tomei A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, Florida August 2010 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This manuscript is dedicated to my family, particularly to my mother and boyfriend, Mike, for being supportive and patient with all my research. I appreciate all the help and suggestions they both offered throughout the entire process. I would also like to thank my committee members for their valuable feedback and encouragement. iii ABSTRACT Author: Megan Tomei Title: She Just Snapped: Reality Television, Murder and the Myth of Feminine Evil Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. David C. Williams Degree: Master of Arts Year: 2010 Snapped, a documentary style show profiling female killers, is one of Oxygen’s longest running hit franchises. This thesis analyzes, through both the frames of feminist theory and rhetoric, the way the show perpetuates and plays upon the myth of feminine evil as well as the stereotype of women as weak, hysterical agents in need of control. Snapped showcases women who start out as seemingly normal but then enact horrendous crimes. The use of women that the audience can identify with but then later fear creates a cathartic experience in which female audience members can be vicariously cleansed of any dangerous animosity they may possess. The show portrays the many extreme examples as the norm for lethal female violence, but this disregards the fact that a majority of women killers act in self defense.

1 INTRODUCTION Fatal Attraction and Scarface Fig. 1.1 People Have Many Different Responses to Movies When Zero Dark Thirty opened in theaters in the United States in January 2013, it ignited a storm of controversy culminating with a serious threat of a congressional investigation empowered to summon the filmmakers to Capitol Hill to testify about the film! How could a fictional Hollywood film be of such interest or importance that members of Congress would launch an investigation? What was at stake? On the surface, the answer was easy. The film, which claimed to be based on a true story, is about the hunt for and eventual killing of Osama bin Laden following the Al Qaeda attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. The film included scenes of the CIA graphically torturing prisoners of war to gather information about bin Laden’s whereabouts (Figure 1.1). The controversy was multi‐faceted. Several members of congress went so far as to demand to know the sources for the film’s claims about the alleged torturing and even demanded that the film be re‐edited prior to video release, removing the scenes COPYRIGHTEDsuggesting that torture yielded MATERIALvital information. Others, including its Academy Award winning director, Kathryn Bigelow, defended the film, pointing to complex narrative ambiguity that in fact could just as easily be read the exact opposite way: after torture fails and the prisoners are treated humanely, they give accurate information. She and the studio refused any re‐editing and resisted all censorship attempts. A similar controversy erupted in 2014 when Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper opened (Figure 1.2).
