No wait, that’s the storyteller coming out in me. Actually, I was born way back in the 1950s in a small farming community of 325 people in Northern Utah. I met Assistant Managers, my beautiful bride Terry in July 1977 Kim and Terry Moss and we were married on November 3rd of that same year. Three children later in 1983 we fell in love with Montana and we moved our small family to Kalispell, in the northwest corner of that state, very near Glacier National Park. Today we have six children (our 28-year-old sweetheart left early and went back home to our Heavenly Father just this past year). We have 17 grandchildren. (Continued on Page 2.) New Additions to Our Fire Station Tour September 6th, some of our residents went on a tour of our Springwood Landing local fire station. We learned that Vancouver now has 10 fire (Continued) stations. The residents got to learn about a fire truck and all Family that is on one. In Montana, I founded “Flathead Storytellers” (and other big liars). We moved into Springwood Landing on Labor Day 2019 and we absolutely love the people here. Everyone is so friendly and fun. We look forward to getting to know everyone and hear their fascinating stories. Be patient with me and please forgive me when I make mistakes. Thanks for your loving welcome and just keep being you. Residents learning about the fire truck A word from Terry Moss: Hi, my name is Terry Moss. We are so excited to be with you serving as your new assistant managers. You have been so gracious and welcoming, we feel like you are family already. I was born and raised in Logan, Utah and attended Utah State University. I am the sixth of 10 children and we have six children of our own and 17 grandchildren. My passion is my art, it may be viewed on my website: www.terrycmoss.com. I enjoy gardening, reading, and all things creative. I hope we will become good friends. Learning about the fire truck Sternwheeler Trip On August 30th, some of our residents went on an excursion to Cascade Locks, Oregon and rode on the Sternwheeler. After our trip on the Sternwheeler, we had lunch together at the Locks Grill. On the way home our bus driver Allen took a little detour past the Skamania Lodge. A wonderful time was had by all that attended.     ESSAYS ON MARKET OUTCOMES AND RELIGIOSITY by NEIL R. MEREDITH (Under the Direction of DAVID B. MUSTARD) ABSTRACT In one subject area of economics, the economics of religion, a growing body of research explores the relationships between market and religious outcomes. The essays add to this research by investigating links between market outcomes and religiosity. In the first essay with David Mustard, we consider differential enrollment growth for religiously affiliated postsecondary institutions relative to private secular institutions in the United States from 1991-2005. We uncover evidence that enrollment growth in religiously affiliated institutions is higher for total, whites, blacks, Hispanics, and males than private secular institutions. We also address whether the religious intensity of an institution also affects enrollment gains. After controlling for other factors we find that intensely Protestant institutions are growing faster for total, blacks, Hispanics, and females relative to other Protestant institutions, which in turn are growing faster than their private secular counterparts. For the second essay, I revisit the relationship between labor income and religiosity to explore whether an omitted variable creates an endogeneity bias. I conduct robustness checks using wages in place of labor income. With the exception of the relationship between labor income and religiosity for men, I find that ordinary least squares of the relationship between labor income and religiosity and between wages and religiosity are reliable due to weak instrument problems. Panel estimation is also attempted for both genders. A lack of variation in frequency of attendance and frequency of prayer within individuals yields insignificant results. In the third essay, I use count data estimation to evaluate the relationship between unemployment and the frequency of religious service attendance and the relationship between being out of the labor force and the frequency of religious service attendance for individuals of working age.

Thomas More College May 2013 Committee members: Morgan Thomas, Ph.D. (Chair) Kimberly Paice, Ph.D. Martin Francis, Ph.D. ABSTRACT After the Second World War there are several accounts of brides and grooms repurposing parachute silk to make a wedding dress. This study collects, records, and examines nine case studies of this sporadic practice, focusing primarily on parachute wedding gowns designed and worn in the United States between the post-war years of 1945 and 1949. By exploring the materiality of the fabric and the physical transformation involved in fashioning a dress from a parachute, these wedding dresses are seen as the result of creative resourcefulness. This practice also embodies the synthesis of the post-war transitions occurring within the personal and social spheres. In contrast to today’s disposable culture, the parachute dresses of the Second World War emphasize singularity and historicity. Drawing from current scholarship on material culture and the complex relationships between people and their possessions, this study examines how parachute gowns bridge world-historical events and the lives of ordinary people. Davis Washington, DC 2010 Ad/Dressing Modernism: Emilia Pardo Bazán’s Later Short Stories (1901-1921) Martha E. Davis, Ph.D. Director: Chad C. Wright, Ph.D. Although her realist and naturalist novels have been widely researched, scholars have only recently begun to study the more than 500 short stories Emilia Pardo Bazán authored. The majority of her short story oeuvre coincides not only with the pinnacle of her feminist writings, but also with the modernist period (1880-1920). Concerned with literary as well as sartorial fashion, Pardo Bazán demonstrates a heightened awareness of her writing style, as well as her characters’ style of dress and their corresponding roles as conformists or New Woman trendsetters. In this dissertation I aim to uncover how the question of “style” or “fashion” manifests itself in characters’ apparel and the literary themes of Pardo Bazán’s “modernist” writing. To illustrate how Modernism allowed Pardo Bazán to experiment with form and content, I draw on the short story theories of Poe, Joyce and other critics. Virginia Woolf’s and Edith Wharton’s reflections provide a contemporary feminist perspective on writing during what Rita Felski deems a “feminized” modern age. I refer to what Robert Johnson describes as the “social modernism” of Spanish women writers that highlights themes related to women’s changing societal roles.
