YOUR SUPPORT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! 1 THE PURPOSE Once told by doctors I would most likely never get out of bed and be forced to live quite a stagnant life, I've defied a lot of odds and come a long way. But I still have further to go and much more to do! I credit a large part of my progress to the ongoing physical therapy I receive. The sole purpose of the Stand Strong Fundraiser is to raise money to help cover my physical therapy expenses. Because of the physical therapy I receive, I am able to maintain an active presence in the community. Going out with friends, traveling to my speaking gigs, hanging out with Bruce Springsteen, etc. I truly believe I have progressed as well as I have in large part due to the physical therapy I have received. When it comes to a spinal cord injury, physical therapy is such a vital part of maintaining good health. It aids in improving blood circulation, maintaining bone density, increasing muscle mass and warning off atrophy and helping with cardiovascular health. Not to mention the psychological and emotional benefits that staying active can provide, especially for someone who is forced to spend their time in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, all too often physical therapy is not covered by insurance and individuals are forced to pay for it out of their own pockets. It can be very expensive, averaging more than $100/hour. The goal of the Stand Strong Fundraiser is two-fold: (1) Assist in the purchase of a special exercise bike called an RT 300 FES bike, which is designed specifically for individuals with spinal cord injuries and paralysis. Electrodes are hooked up to the individual's legs and arms. Electrical pulses stimulate the muscles to contract, allowing the individual to pedal. It is all active motion, meaning, the individual uses his or her own muscles to pedal the bike. This way he or she achieves the same benefits as an able-bodied person would riding a stationary bike. (2) Continue my workouts at Buckeye Wellness Center – a fitness facility in Valley View that caters specifically to individuals living with spinal cord injuries. The gym offers aggressive exercise-based recovery, most of which is done with the individual out of his or her wheelchair. Thank you in advance for all of the support you have shown me.
