It is also a region characterised by an extreme climate, featuring environmental assets of national signifcance, and considered a valued land by indigenous people. Given the arid conditions, surface water is scarce, shows large variability, and is an unreliable source of water for drinking and industrial/mining purposes. In such conditions, groundwater has become a strategic resource in the Pilbara region. To date, however, an integrated regional characterization and conceptualization of the occurrence of groundwater resources in this region were missing. This article addresses this gap by integrating disperse knowledge, collating available data on aquifer properties, by reviewing groundwater systems (aquifer types) present in the region and identifying their potential, and propos- ing conceptualizations for the occurrence and functioning of the groundwater systems identifed. Results show that aquifers across the Pilbara Region vary substantially and can be classifed in seven main types: coastal alluvial systems, concealed channel -

Wt?~/frn Australia. ABSTRACT This paper is essentially an annotated list ofthe 284 species of birds recorded from the Pilbara, in the arid north-west of Western Australia. INTRODUCTION This is the third in a series of regional avifaunas covering Western Australia. The first dealt with the Kimberley Division (Storr 1980, Spec. Pubis West. Aust. Mus. No. 11), and the second with the north-eastern interior ofthe State (Storr 1981, Rec. West. Aust. Mus. 9: 65-99). The scope of the present work is the same as the earlier papers, i.e. information is given for each species on local distribution, ecological status, relative abundance, habitat preferences, breeding season (defined by the months in which eggs are laid), clutch size (prefixed by C for eggs and nestlings, B fpr broods that have'left the nest but are still dependent), and movements. -

The bat has very specific maternal roost environmental requirements which appear to be rare across the two bioregions although the species is known to inhabit suitable abandoned mine workings in the east Pilbara. THE PILBARA EVOLUTION’S TURNING POINT Reg Morrison Evolution’s turning point The massive deposits of iron ore upon which Australia’s econ- omy so heavily depends hold vastly greater significance for us, and for our species, than mere money can begin to define. Most humans now spend their lives in the shadow of steel- reinforced office towers, factories, apartment blocks and shop- ping malls, and use steel motor vehicles and rail systems to move about their sprawling conurbations. And in turn, these cultural baubles depend upon the integrity of vast electricity grids to link them together and enliven them. Bedazzled as we are by our glittering technology it is easy to forget that we owe our existence to an iron-based catastro- phe. If marine bacteria had not rusted the seas with their oxygen waste, and the sedimentary fallout had not formed the Hamersley Ranges, our species—like most of the others that we see about us—could not have evolved. Millstream Chichester National Park and Mungaroona Range Nature Reserve Management Plan No. 69 2011 Traditional Owners Millstream Park Council 20110464-10-200 Millstream Chichester National Park and Mungaroona Range Nature Reserve Management Plan No. 69 2011 MILLSTREAM CHICHESTER NATIONAL PARK AND MUNGAROONA RANGE NATURE RESERVE Management Plan 2011 Traditional Owners – Millstream Park Council Department of Environment and Conservation Conservation Commission of Western Australia VISION By 2021, the Millstream Chichester National Park and Mungaroona Range Nature Reserve will have greater recognition by the local and broader community, visitors and others of its important cultural and mythological significance for the Yindjibarndi and Ngarluma Traditional Owners. The Indigenous heritage of the planning area will be preserved by the ongoing involvement of the Traditional Owners, who will have a critical and active role in jointly managing the cultural and natural values of the planning area. The significant wetland ecosystem and other natural values of the planning area will be in better condition than at present and the subterranean aquifer will remain in its current healthy condition. This will have been achieved through efforts focused on effective weed control, restoring the resilience of the natural ecosystems and improved management of water extraction from the aquifer, through monitoring, research and adaptive management. In particular, those values that are not found or are uncommon elsewhere will have been conserved, and their special conservation significance will be recognised by the local and broader community and visitors. The planning area will continue to support a wide range of nature-based recreational activities with a focus on preserving the natural character of the region and its wilderness qualities including its rangeland landscapes and open pools of the Fortescue River.
