You are all very welcome to this weekend’s Michael Murphy Sports Intermediate Championship quarter- finals. We have battled against the change in our lifestyles, our work , our social fabric, our families, and our sporting involvement. The GAA has seen many changes since its foundation and it has originated from the roots and soul of our Gaelic traditions, but no member could have foreseen the changes wrought by Covid-19. The year 2020 will certainly remain in our memories as the year of transformation, and we continue to implement the many prevention measures required to keep this virus at bay. I encourage you all to continue the great work that we have all had a part to play in, and I thank you for the many hours of voluntary assistance you have contributed in your Club areas in assisting the HSE and others, in bringing safe and healthy practice to vulnerable and lonely members of our communities. On behalf of the GAA in Donegal I thank the frontline workers who have given so much to helping our society, in facing the challenge of the coronavirus. There was a period this year where we all thought that we wouldn’t get playing our games, but many difficulties were overcome to reach these championship quarterfinals. We have not agreed with all the instructions and regulations, but we respect the decision makers for their fight against this unprecedented virus while still getting our games played. The County Competition Control Committee (CCC) have used new regulations, competition formats, and workmanlike decision making to reach this stage of championship, and we are all delighted to see the championship finalised in these difficulty times. I congratulate all Clubs who have continued to contribute to giving us the opportunity to see Gaelic games played in changed and difficult times. The streaming of our games is a new phase and challenge that we have been thrown into, and we have tech-knowledgeable members getting to grips with this new way of bringing our club games into our homes. I wish the eight competing teams, across the four games, and the match Officials, the best of luck. 1 Page 8: LYIT advert – same as last year 8 4 Naomh Conaill 1 Stephen McGrath 2 3 4 Kevin McGettigan AJ Gallagher Ultan Doherty 5 6 7 Odhran Doherty Anthony Thmpson Ethan O’Donnell 8 9 Ciaran Thompson Nathan Byrne 10 11 12 Eunan Doherty Eoghan McGettigan Marty Boyle 13 14 15 Dermot Molloy Charles McGuinness Jeaic MacCeallbhuí 16. The Knock-Out Stages and Streaming The Government’s decision to play all Gaelic Games behind closed doors until September 13th is dis-appointing for all club members and other supporters. Ironically, CLG Dhún na nGall scheduled knock-out games for September because the original government roadmap designated the start of that month for the return of up to 5,000 supporters at our games. As Iron Mike said “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”. The GAA is a widespread grassroots organisation and it is important in these difficult times that CLG Dhún na nGall do their utmost to look after the interests of the members and supporters who make clubs throughout the County the excellent community organisations they are. As such, the County Board is striving to broadcast most of the 33 knockout games in the Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure Senior, Intermediate and Junior championships – football and hurling. Kudos to Aodh Ruadh and Setanta who stepped up to the mark last weekend to stream the Junior Hurling semi-finals on their own Facebook pages. This weekend CLG Dhún na nGall intend to stream four Senior and four Intermediate Championship quarterfinals and three Relegation play-off games as follows: Fri Sept 4th 8.30 - Ard na Ratha v An Clocháb Liath in association with Ocean FM - Paddy McGill and Maxie Curran Sat Sept 5th 12.00 - Aodh Ruadh v Naomh Muire in association with RnaG Damien O’Donaill and Sylvester Maguire Sat Sept 5th 13.00 - Naomh Colmcille v An Bheart with commentary from Damien Dowds and Paul McGonigle Sat Sept 5th 15.30 - Naomh Conaill v Gleann Fhinne in association with Highland Radio - Oisin Kelly and Martin McHugh Sat Sept 5th 18.30 - Cill Chartha v Naomh Micheál in association with Highland Radio - Oisin Kelly and Martin McHugh Sat Sept 5th 18.30 - Cloich Cheann Fhaola v Aodh Rua Cuil na gCuirridín in association with RnaG - Damien O’Donnell agus Seosamh Mac Ceallbhuí Sun Sept 6th 13.00 - Naomh Bríd v Naomh Ultan with commentary from Ryan Walsh and Pat Campbell Sun Sept 6th 15.00 - Gaoth Dobhair v Sean MacCumhaill in association with RnaG - Damien O’Donnell agus Danny O’Donnell Sun Sept 6th 15.30 - Buncranncha v Gaeil Fhánadá with commentary from Damien Dowds and Paul McGonigle Sun Sept 6th 17.00 - Naomh Columba v Malainn in association with Ocean FM - Ciaran Cannon and John Joe Doherty Sun Sept 6th 18.30 -Naomh Ádhamhnáin v Realt na Mara in association with Highland Radio - Oisin Kelly and Brendan Kilcoyne All of these games are available on a PPV basis - €3 per game - via the Donegal GAA website. It is planned to stream subsequent games over the rest of September although the latter end of the current schedule may be subject to change, moving forward or backwards, depending on future circumstances. While many clubs have been happily streaming over the last six weeks, Donegal GAA streamed its first 2020 game on August 23rd - the Round 4 football game between St Eunans and St Michaels. The live stream attracted peak-viewing of over a 1,000 and within a few days had been viewed over 15,000 times on the Official Donegal Facebook page. The knock-out games streamed by the County Board will be on a PPV basis. The quarterfinals will cost €3 and other games €5 except for the Senior football final which will be €8. The PRO will produce a series of “virtual programmes” - such as this one - that can be can be consulted on-line or down loaded/printed. Programmes will be included in the PPV price or free where there is no PPV as is the case with this Virtual Programme. While the County Board will endeavour to stream all knockout games where this is not possible it is hoped other games can be streamed with the help of clubs. At this point, it is appropriate to express my gratitude to the many clubs that have streamed games (for free) and looked after the interests of their supporters locally, elsewhere in Ireland and overseas over recent weeks. The County Board will forego revenue on games where clubs are providing the voluntary help and will stream these games for free. For all streamed games, and the “free” ones in particular, it is worth noting that streaming in the County is still in its infancy, there may be occasional issues with consistent coverage in some venues and it is being provided by local, unpaid volunteers - people should manage their expectation around this. Finally thank you to the commentators - as above - and the four stream teams - described elsewhere in this programme who have made this venture possible. 3 Some room for upset in Senior Quarterfinals but Home Teams are Favourites The Senior Championship was run in a novel sixteen team league format this year.
