FHWA-HRT-18-039 FEBRUARY 2019 Research, Development, and Technology Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center 6300 Georgetown Pike McLean, VA 22101-2296 FOREWORD The Motorcycle Crash Causation Study, conducted through the Federal Highway Administration Office of Safety Research and Development, produced a wealth of information on the causal factors for motorcycle crashes, and its corresponding Volumes provide perspectives on what crash-countermeasure opportunities can be developed. This study used a crash- and control-case approach developed from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development protocols, which as discussed in this report, has provided insights into more than 1,900 data elements that may be associated with motorcycle-crash causation. The research team produced a final report along with a 14-volume series of supplemental reports that provide an overview of the study and a summary of its observations, the data-collection forms and coding definitions, a tabulation of each data element collected from each form, and selected comparisons with previous studies. It is anticipated that readers will select those Volumes and data elements that provide information of specific interest. This document, Volume 2—Coding Manual, provides the coding conventions used in this study. It provides data that enable the proper interpretation and understanding of the codes assigned to variables of interest during the study. This report will be of interest to individuals involved in traffic safety, safety training, crash and injury reduction, and roadway design and policy making, as well as to motorcycle- and safety-equipment designers, crash investigators and researchers, motorcycle and automotive manufacturers and consumers, roadway users, and human-factors specialists.

The suede-covered racing saddle keeps the pilot in place during the kind of spirited cornering maneuvers the 750S is so well known for. Like previous MVs, the 750S America was expensive and exclusive and everyone knows Italian style and performance have never been cheap. And that goes double for motorcycles built by that most exclusive of Italy’s bike-makers, MV Agusta.

Surtees was only 21 years old. hut already had hecome one of the top riders for the NOlton factory team. Although Surtees was actively looking for another factory ride- Norton could not contest all the World Championship road races in ] 956- Surtees put Count Agusta off until Ihe could test the machines at Monza and Modena. In his autohiography, Speed, Surtees descrihes the MY racers that he first test rode: "On the first trial, I was greatly impressed hy the engine's performance. The suspension seemed too soft, however, and had too much movement- a full six inches, I discovered." Assured that the frame would he modified, Surtees signed. He rode for MY -Agusta for the next four seasons, winning the World Champinnship in 1956, 1958 and 1959. John Surtees was not the only world champion to race MY's. The IistofMV Agus- tafactory riders reads like a Who's Who of postwar Grand Prix racing: Tarquino Provi- ni, Umbelto Masetti, Mike Hai]wood, Giacomo Agostini and Phi] Read all rode MY's at one time or another.     MV Agusta 500/4 Circa 1968 By 1968 MV had won eleven 500cc World championships. Some with the triple and some with the four. Famous MV champions were Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, John Surtees, Tarquinio Provini, Carlo Ubbiali, and John Hartle. This machine was handbuilt in 820 hours between 2004 and 2008, using as many original MV parts and MV suppliers parts as possible. Only where original parts were not available, replicas were made from drawings, photos & technical information. The aim of the project was to reconstruct this rare machine capturing its essential characteristics. The machine is not a reproduction. Most parts are MV. Parts were sourced from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, NZ, the US, UK, and Australia. Finding and aquiring parts, especially the engine, frame and hubs, consumed at least 40% of the project time. It would have been impossible without the many clubs, dealers, manufacturers and knowledgeable individuals contacted. Communication, often in other languages, was by mail, `phone, fax, SMS and email. Overseas trips to suppliers in europe were conducted. Many interesting conversations were experienced in the process. There are few who have MV knowledge and the most reliable and communicative were found in Germany. The British were easily the costliest, most insular, and unco- operative. The Italians by contrast were found to be helpful, friendly, & warmly sentimental. There are apparently 15 racing 500/4`s. Some of them in the MV Samarate museum. However, as they did not reach production, only three roadgoing 500/4`s are known to exist - the one you are viewing, one in the US and, another in Germany.
