Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates.

  • Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 by Jeffery S
Delightfulee Jeffrey S. McMillan University of Michigan Press Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 By Jeffery S. McMillan This is an annotated listing of all known Lee Morgan performances and all recordings (studio, live performances, broadcasts, telecasts, and interviews). The titles of studio recordings are given in bold and preceded by the name of the session leader. Recordings that appear to be lost are prefaced with a single asterisk in parentheses: (*). Recordings that have been commercially issued have two asterisks: **. Recordings that exist on tape but have never been commercially released have two asterisks in parentheses: (**). Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC).

Many jazz musicians have utilized West African music in their musical compositions. Blakey, Lateef and Weston were not the first musicians to do so, however they were chosen for this dissertation because their experiences, influences, and music clearly illustrate the importance that West African culture has played in the lives of African American jazz musicians. Born during the Harlem Renaissance each of these musicians was influenced by the political views and concepts that predominated African American culture at that time.

  • Benny Golson
1 The TENORSAX of BENNY GOLSON Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: April 8, 2016 2 Born: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jan. 25, 1929 Introduction: We always appreciated Benny Golson’s warm tenor saxophone sound and soon realized he was one of the major soloists on his instrument in the period 1955-1965. Later he visited Norway several times. Early history: Studied piano at 9 and switched to tenorsax at 14. Attended Harvard University in Washington and stated to gig around Philadelphia late 40's. Numerous recordings in Philadelphia ca. 1950 under the leadership of Tiny Grimes and Jimmy Preston. Left Philadelphia with Bull Moose Jackson 1951. This band included Tadd Dameron who encouraged him to study arranging and composing. Two years later he played in a band led by Dameron. Left Dameron to join Lionel Hampton (1953). Several short stays with Johnny Hodges 1954, Earl Bostic 1954-56’ but began to make a name for himself as a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra (1956-57). With Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1958-59). He then worked as a freelance in New York and studied with the composer Henry Brant. From 1959 to 1962, with Art Farmer, he was the leader of the Jazztet, a group with varying personnel that proved a successful vehicle for Golson’s writing. Message: Benny Golson was an important composer and arranger, it is enough to mention “Stablemates”, “I Remember Clifford”, Whisper Not?”, “Along Came Betty”, “Blues March” and “Are You Real?”. However, this fact and the results are outside this tenor saxophone solography. 3 BENNY GOLSON SOLOGRAPHY TINY GRIMES / BENNY GOLDSON AND HIS ROCKIN' HIGHLANDERS Philadelphia, 1950 Benny Golson (ts), Freddie Redd (p), Tiny Grimes (g), Ike Isaacs (b), unknown (dm), George "Haji Baba" Grant (vo).
