Locale Just under an hour southeast from the ranch is Missoula, Montana located in the west-central portion of Montana. Missoula's population was 64,081; making Missoula, Montana the second largest city in Montana. The 2009 census estimate put the population of Missoula County at 108,623. Missoula is the second largest media market in the state. Local news sources include the Missoulian and the Missoula Independent. Missoula was recently ranked number 10 in CNN Money's list of the best places to launch small businesses. It is also known for being one of the most politically liberal cities in the state. Missoula is the home of the University of Montana, and the birthplace of Jeannette Rankin (1880–1973), the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress. Polson, Montana is 25 miles north of the ranch. Polson lies in a natural amphitheater at the south end of Flathead Lake in Northwest Montana located on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

This charming lakeshore community is the trading center for one of most fertile farming areas in Montana. This prime cherry growing region is home to dozens of orchards, which Polson celebrates with an annual Cherry Festival.

The broad, sweeping Mission Valley south of Polson is bordered by the rugged, snow-capped Mission Mountains. The that flows through Polson features whitewater rafting and Kerr Dam. Just south of Ronan, visitors can see large herds of bison, , deer, antelope and barn sheep at the National at Moiese. Bird watchers will enjoy the Ninepipes and Pablo Wildlife Refuges.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western part of the contiguous United States. With a surface area of about 191.5 sq miles, it is slightly larger than that of Lake Tahoe. Flathead Lake is 27.3 miles long and up to 15.5 miles wide. Its known maximum depth is 370.7 feet, making it deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea and the Persian Gulf. The lake was raised 10 ft by Kerr Dam. It is one of the cleanest in the populated world for its size and type.

Flathead Lake is 30 miles southwest of Glacier National Park and is flanked by two scenic highways, which wind along its curving shoreline. On the west side is U.S. Route 93, and on the east, is Route 35. The lake is bordered on its eastern shore by the Mission Mountains and on the west by the Salish Mountains. The Flathead valley was formed by the glacial damming of the Flathead River and sustains a remarkably mild climate for a region located this far north and inland; the Pacific Ocean is almost 400 miles to the west. The mild climate allows for cherry orchards on the east shore and vineyards for wine production on the west shore. There are also apple, pear and plum orchards around the lake as well as vegetable, hay, honey, nursery tree, Christmas tree, sod/turf and wheat production bordering or near the lake.

St. Ignatius Montana Numerous people have commented that this location is the most beautiful place in the entire West with 360 degree panoramic postcard type views and with its more westerly location it has the mildest climate in the entire state. The ranch is just two miles from The National Bison Range and several wildlife preserves.

St. Ignatius is a town in Lake County, Montana. The town is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles.

As of the census of 2000, there were 788 people, 307 households, and 194 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,509.1 people per square mile. There were 328 housing units at an average density of 628.1/sq mi. The racial makeup of the town was 52.54% White, 44.67% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.19% of the population. In the town the population was spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $25,682, and the median income for a family was $34,250. Males had a median income of $30,804 versus $24,844 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,336. About 15.5% of families and 19.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 17.6% of that age 65 or over.

Lake County Located in northwestern Montana, Lake County is Montana's ninth most populous with 26,904 residents, according to the 2001 estimates produced by the U.S. Census Bureau. Polson, the county seat, is the state's 18th largest city with a population of 4,041, according to the 2000 Census.

According to the Montana Almanac, by authors Andrea Merrill and Judy Jacobson, the county was established in 1923 and was one of the last counties to be formed in Montana. The authors add Flathead Lake was the inspiration for Lake County’s name and Polson was named for Mission Valley stockman David Polson. Lake County is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation. The Flathead Reservation was established by the Hellgate Treaty of 1855.

In 1845, Father Pierre Jean DeSmet arrived and helped establish the first permanent mission at St. Ignatius in 1854. Lake County is also home to the Mission Valley and Mission Mountain

Wildlife & Fishery The broad, sweeping Mission Valley south of Polson is bordered by the rugged, snow-capped Mission Mountains. The Flathead River, 8 miles from the ranch, flows from Polson features fishing, whitewater rafting and Kerr Dam. A half mile from the ranch is access to tens of thousands of acres of upland and wetland bird . Just a short distance away there are over 1,500 miles of marked horse and hiking trails in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area which is known for excellent big game hunting. The National Bison Range at Moiese just south of Ronan Montana with its large herds of bison, elk, deer, antelope and barn sheep is nearby, as well as the Ninepipes and Pablo Wildlife Refuges for bird watchers.

Recreational Opportunities There is an abundance of outdoor recreational activities all around the ranch including fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, boating, skiing, golfing and camping. Nearby areas of interest include Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park, KERR Dam, National Bison Range, Pablo Reservoir, Mission Mountains, Seeley Lake, Kalispell, Whitefish and Missoula.

There are several major ski resorts near the ranch. The closest are Lookout Pass, Blacktail Mountain and Snowbowl.

Unlimited horseback riding opportunities surround the ranch. Approximately 5 miles to the East are numerous trail heads to the Mission Mountain Wilderness, which connect to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area – America's largest wilderness area. Accessible only by horse, the Bob Marshall claims to have more than 1500 miles of marked horse trails.

8 miles southwest of the ranch are the Sand Hills of Moiese. The ranch has used the Sand Hills as a colt training area that gives a colt a tremendous amount of experience in a short time.
