8 www.visitkck.com.au OUR LAKES & RIVERS Murray River The Murray River is one of Australia’s greatest tourism destinations and attracts thousands of visitors annually for fishing, camping, bushwalking and outdoor recreation. The Murray River, sometimes referred to as "The Mighty Murray", is Australia's largest river at 2,375kms in length. The Murray forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria and flows into the sea at Lake Alexandrina in South Australia. The Murray provides irrigation water to the many farming communities along the river, as well as providing important environmental flows to the many forests and wetlands. The Murray River forms the north east boundary of the Gannawarra Shire and is home to the river towns of Murrabit, Koondrook and Cohuna. The river can be accessed from boat ramps in Koondrook and Murrabit and within Gunbower Forest near Cohuna. Loddon River The Loddon River rises on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range, south of Daylesford, and flows northwards 430km, flowing into the Murray River between Murrabit and Swan Hill. The Loddon is a unique river system as it collects water from southern and central Victoria and distributes it onto the floodplain north of Serpentine. The river splits into a series of creeks that fan out across the floodplain, delivering water into a chain of lakes and wetlands that Kerang has become famous for. The Loddon River is regulated by the Kerang Weir downstream of Kerang. It is a popular fishing spot and there are interesting walking tracks that have become popular with locals and visitors alike.

Avoca River The Avoca River rises near the western end of the Great Dividing Range and flows northward, entering the Murray River via Lake Boga, south of Swan Hill. This river system is largely unregulated, except for some small storage dams in the upper catchment and a series of low level weirs along its route. The Avoca River in this area is similar to the Loddon River and distributes flood flows via a series of break-away creeks out onto the floodplain. The river eventually empties into a series of large wetlands (Avoca Marshes), west of Kerang. In very wet seasons the Avoca Marshes fill and overflow into Lake Boga and then into the Murray River. This river can remain dry for several years but is impressive when in flood. It flows through Quambatook, creating a scenic backdrop to the township.

www.visitkck.com.au 9 OUR LAKES & RIVERS Gunbower Creek The Gunbower Creek breaks away from the Murray River near Torrumbarry and re-enters near Koondrook.

It forms the western boundary of magnificent Gunbower Island with the Murray River bordering the eastern boundary.

The Gunbower Creek is an important natural carrier in the irrigation supply system. It holds water permanently and has very high environmental value, particularly for native fish and water birds.

Its high water levels and gentle banks make it very attractive for camping with great access to the water for fishing or canoeing.

Visitors to the Gunbower Creek can also explore the island and the Murray River via a network of signed tracks.

10 www.visitkck.com.au OUR LAKES & RIVERS Kangaroo Lake Kangaroo Lake is situated 20km north of Kerang and is one of the area’s largest freshwater lakes.

It stores water to supply the surrounding agricultural enterprises and can also supply water into the Murray River to the north.

It is environmentally significant, particularly for fish, and is oneof Victoria’s best lakes for recreation. Access is best from the northern end via the Mystic Park East Road, where there is great opportunity for day visitors to swim, fish and water ski.

Reedy Lakes System

The three Reedy Lakes are natural wetlands that were incorporated into the irrigation supply system over 100 years ago. They are all similar in size and regulated by connecting channels. First Reedy is the deepest and contains mostly open water, surrounded by reed beds. Apex Park is situated at the southern end and is a popular place for picnics, swimming and fishing. Second Reedy supports a large Ibis rookery in the shallow sections of the wetland where thousands of birds nest when there is sufficient water and food supply. A bird hide, picnic area and toilets are provided for visitors. Third Reedy is the shallowest lake where hundreds of dead standing red gums provide evidence it was originally an intermittent swamp. The timber scattered across the base of the wetland provides safe roosts for water birds and habitat for fish.

The Avoca Marshes

The Avoca Marshes are a series of interconnecting natural wetlands that receive water when the Avoca River is in flood.

Lake Bael Bael to the south is a deep freshwater lake. First Marsh is slightly shallower and operates as an "occasional lake" with sparse vegetation growing across the wetland bed. Second and Third Marshes are shallow swamps containing thousands of dry standing red gums. These wetlands fill during flood periods and operate in a wetting and drying cycle.

Many of the red gum trees died in Second and Third Marshes after an extended wet period in the 1970's. Adjoining these marshes is a significant large black box forest. The marshes are environmentally significant and provide important feeding and breeding areas for water birds. Ducks, cormorants, eagles and kites are plentiful during wet periods. During dry periods the reserve supports kangaroos, woodland birds and a variety of reptiles.

www.visitkck.com.au 11 OUR LAKES & RIVERS Lake Charm

Lake Charm is a large, freshwater lake (520ha) that is held at a constant level of approximately 22,000 megalitres.

It is a Ramsar listed wetland with moderate environmental value and is used for recreational activities such as swimming, skiing, sailing and fishing.

Lake Charm provides water for local irrigation farmers and, like Kangaroo Lake, can return water back into the Murray River. It is one of the few lakes where Redfin are commonly caught.

The Lake is a regular venue for Ski Racing Victoria’s point score events, which contributes towards the Victorian Titles.

12 www.visitkck.com.au OUR LAKES & RIVERS Lake Meran

Lake Meran is a picturesque freshwater lake on the northern end of Leaghur Forest.

It is a natural lake and prone to seasonal fluctuations. The lake has white sandy beaches and is surrounded by healthy red gums. Lake Meran is a popular place over summer for camping, swimming, water skiing, or simply relaxing in the lovely natural surrounds.

The Kerang Lakes The Kerang Lakes are recognised as internationally important wetlands under the Ramsar Convention.

The Kerang Ramsar site comprises a series of 22 lakes and swamps on the lower reaches of the Avoca and Loddon Rivers and the Pyramid Creek. It is a very diverse system and the wetlands are large and differ widely in permanence, depth, salinity and vegetation type. The wetlands regularly support large numbers of water birds.

The Kerang Lakes area is unique and supports a diversity of wildlife across a relatively small area. Some of these wetlands are permanent and connected to the irrigation supply system. Others are part of the natural floodplain and fill intermittently, while some are shallow and experience a range of salinities. This diversity provides a range of Photo courtesy Tom Lowe habitats suitable for numerous birds, plants and animals.

The permanent wetlands, which are connected to the irrigation supply system, receive regulated flows from the Murray River.

These wetlands also receive floodwater from local rivers and creeks. Many of the lakes are regularly stocked with Murray Cod and Yellow Belly; however, smaller fish like Smelt, Bony Bream and Gudgeon are also plentiful.

16 www.visitkck.com.au OUR INDUSTRY Agriculture The Shire is agriculturally focused with a diverse enterprise mix, including livestock, dairy, hay and grain, horticulture, viticulture and stonefruit. One of Victoria’s larger vineyards, owned by Brown Brothers, renowned viticulturists and winemakers is located within the shire. A large corporate farm development by VicSuper has seen a range of new irrigated crops grown in the area including cotton, processing tomatoes, corn, sorghum, as well as a mix of grain and fodder crops.

Dairy has a strong and vibrant sector within the shire and accounts for 50% of agricultural production. Dairy farmers in the Gannawarra Shire produce around 280M litres of milk annually, making a significant contribution to Victoria’s export economy.

Livestock production accounts for around 17% of agricultural activity and includes pigs, sheep, cattle, goats, buffalo, emu and deer. Several large piggeries have been developed in the Macorna area south of Kerang and these highly intensive facilities can accommodate large numbers of pigs. There are many piggeries right across the municipality from Leitchville to Quambatook in the Mallee. Sheep and cattle are popular in mixed irrigation farms and in broad acre grain farms for meat production.

Viticulture is limited to plantings around Kangaroo Lake and Lake Charm where the main growers Brown Brothers and the Dent family have around 1,000 acres of wine grapes planted.

Brown Brothers first established their vineyards at Kangaroo Lake in the early 60’s after severe frosts wiped out crops in their Milawa vineyards. A move to a warmer climate and beside Kangaroo Lake was to minimise frost losses.

Horticulture in Gannawarra consists of walnuts at Koondrook, citrus at Murrabit, organic apples at Kerang, stonefruit at Kangaroo Lake and olives at Cohuna.

Cropping of cereal and oilseeds is widespread across the Gannawarra Shire. Wheat, barley and canola are the most popular crops and grown primarily in the western Mallee portion of the Shire from Lake Meran through to Quambatook and Lalbert. Other broadacre crops include oats, peas, beans and vetch.

Irrigation plays an important role in agriculture. Water is supplied from the Murray River and Goulburn River systems via a network of automated channels and natural lakes and creeks. Lake Charm, Kangaroo Lake and the Gunbower Creek are natural assets that play a key role in the distribution of irrigation water from the Murray River. Irrigation farms have undergone an efficiency transformation with laser grading and re use systems developed for flood irrigation farms. The implementation of subsurface irrigation, centre pivot irrigators, pipes and risers and automation has assisted in further efficiency gains for irrigation farmers.

www.visitkck.com.au 25 Activities close to nature Bird watching - Bird watching is very popular in the Gunbower National Park and forest with many wetlands and waterways providing ideal habitat. The Kerang Lakes are popular bird watching locations, including Cullen’s Lake, Lake Tutchewop, the Avoca Marshes and Lake Bael Bael. Bird watching links: Birdlife Australia (www.birdlife.org.au ) and Birdlife Echuca District.

Fishing – Murray Cod and Yellow Belly are the most common fish caught in the Murray River, Gunbower Creek and Loddon River along with Redfin, Carp and Bony Bream. Anglers may also catch fish in the many channels and lakes throughout the region. Before fishing, anglers need to ensure they have the required licence to fish and be aware of rules and regulations relating to sizes and bag limits. Baits: Worms, yabbies, cheese, bardi grubs, shrimp and lures. The Gannawarra Shire supports “catch and release” of native fish.

Mountain biking - The many tracks and trails throughout the Gunbower National Park and State Forest are great for mountain biking. Enter the forest at Cohuna and cycle through to Koondrook. You will see wildlife and birdlife on your journey through one of the most beautiful locations in northern Victoria. Local towns are also in close proximity and you can even catch the train from Melbourne to Kerang for a cycling adventure!

Canoeing - Bring your canoe and drift along the Murray or through the waters of Safe’s Lagoon and Gunbower Creek. A 5 km canoe trail (an easy two hour paddle) has been established through the wetlands of Safe’s Lagoon. Here you can see birds making their homes or nesting their young in the hollows of standing dead trees. You can hear their calls and see the myriad of creatures living among the reeds and waters. The route to the canoe trail is well signposted off the Kerang-Koondrook Road as you head to Koondrook.

Bushwalking - Take your pick from many beautiful local bushwalks. Enjoy the walking tracks along the Gunbower Creek and Murray River in Koondrook or choose from the many options within the Gunbower National Park and State Forest. The Loddon River and Kerang Lakes also provide many walking opportunities while new tracks and trails are being developed in most local towns. Take time to locate these great new facilities!

Water sports - Water skiing is popular at Lake Charm, Kangaroo Lake and on the Gunbower Creek at Cohuna while the Kerang Lakes are popular sailing venues. Lake Meran is also used for recreation such as skiing, sailing and boating but be sure to check water levels as it is a flood-filled lake.

Camping - Get outdoors around the many waterways suitable for camping! Lakes, rivers or wetlands - the choice is yours. Choose from the beautiful forest settings close to nature.

Hunting - Duck hunting on the many wetlands is a popular activity that has been a tradition for many years, especially in the Kerang area. Depending on water levels hundred of shooters converge on the area when duck hunting is in season.

26 www.visitkck.com.au Activities close to nature

www.visitkck.com.au 27 Gunbower National Park Gunbower Island is situated between Torrumbarry and Koondrook and is bounded by the Murray River and Gunbower Creek.

This 26,400 ha floodplain is the largest inland island in Australia and considered one of the 10 most important wetlands in the Murray Darling Basin. About 80 percent of the area contains magnificent red gum and black box forests and provides a home for a large range of birds, native mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

The rich natural environment of the many lakes and rivers were extremely important to the Aboriginal people. The local Baraba Baraba tribe occupied this area for thousands of years and lived in harmony with the land, adapting to the changing conditions. They moved and utilised available resources between the floodplain and the Mallee to the west.

This area provided them materials such as timber, bark and reeds and a variety of foods including mussels, fish, yabbies, birds’ eggs, possums and important plants such as cumbungi, nardoo and yam daisies. Evidence of Aboriginal occupation can be found in the various scar trees, cooking mounds and middens.

Prior to European settlement large areas of the island flooded regularly and the forest was a sparsely populated woodland. The first commercial use of the red gum forest was for cutting railway sleepers for the expanding railway network. In the early years timber was sourced close to the river banks and hauled to the Murray River with bullock or horse teams and transported by barges to Echuca or Swan Hill.

As the timber industry developed, more sustainable practices were introduced where usage involved single tree selection which maintains the forest canopy. More recently additional restrictions have been introduced that limit the area available for logging.

River regulation over time has resulted in a significant reduction in flooding frequency; however there are several programs that aim to increase water flow through the forest and preserve the important environmental value.

Fauna The wetlands of Gunbower Island support a unique array of water birds, wildlife and aquatic plants and animals, with over 170 bird species recorded. It also contains 24 reptile species, a variety of fish and approximately 200 plant species. Kangaroos and emus are very common throughout the forest, with platypus and echidnas being a bit more elusive. Campers will almost certainly hear calls from mopoke and barking owls, a variety of frogs and a range of woodland and water birds.

Gunbower Island is an ideal destination for nature lovers and campers. Popular activities include fishing, bushwalking, camping, canoeing or simply driving through the track network sightseeing.

www.visitkck.com.au 29 Other forests and reserves Guttrum and Benwell Forests Guttrum and Benwell Forests are situated on the Murray River between Koondrook and Murrabit, downstream of Gunbower Island. The Murray River borders the northern boundaries. The forests have similar natural characteristics to Gunbower Island and become inundated when the Murray River floods.

Wandella Forest Wandella Forest is a 900 ha Black Box Forest 6 kms west of Kerang. The Quambatook Road divides the forest and access is best off this road onto the network of dirt tracks during the dry period. Like most Black Box plant communities the forest is occasionally flooded which stimulates growth and attracts numerous water birds. It is a great place for a scenic drive and visitors will almost certainly see some interesting wildlife.

Leaghur Forest Leaghur Forest is the largest and arguably the best Black Box forest in Victoria. Located on the Loddon Floodplain, half way between Kerang and Boort, it covers 1680 ha and has high environmental value. Over 300 plants have been identified within the forest, the majority native.

Due to the undulating or gilgai nature of the forest floor the understorey plants are very diverse and these change over time depending on seasonal rainfall and flooding. Woodland birds are present most of the time and wetland species visit during times of flooding. Access is good during dry times, via a network of dirt tracks for sightseeing or the forest is a great place to explore on bikes. There are two bush camping areas available for visitors.

Johnson Swamp Wildlife Reserve Johnson Swamp is a 340ha wetland, 15 km south-east of Kerang. It is a significant area for its high diversity, feeding and breeding opportunities and abundance of wetland birds; 42 species. The swamp also supports other species including turtles, frogs and insects. There are 90 plant species recorded making up specific habitats that attract birds and animals to breed.

It is also important for Indigenous cultural sites including artefacts, mounds and scar trees.

Hird Swamp Wildlife Reserve Hird Swamp at Macorna North is an internationally significant, Ramsar-listed wetland. Its average depth provides excellent foraging habitat for small wading birds. The swamp from time to time is artificially filled with environmental allocations throughout Spring and Summer.
