THOMAS J. BATA LECTURE SERIES ON RESPONSIBLE CAPITALISM People as a Key to Successful Business

The Bata Foundation established the Thomas J. Bata Lecture Series on Responsible Capitalism in honour of the late Thomas J. Bata who built the Bata Shoe Organization into the world’s leading footwear retailer and manufacturer. Known as “Shoemaker to the World”, Mr. Bata, who would this year celebrate his 100th birthday, promoted themes such as the benefi ts of entrepreneurship, regional cooperation and responsible capitalism throughout his lifetime and was famous for his outstanding commitment to Bata company employees. This Lecture Series is inspired by the belief of Mr. Bata and the Bata Family that business is a public trust which should contribute to the well-being of the communities in which it operates. A lecture is given in alternate years in Canada (organi- zed by the Schulich School of Business) and in the Czech Republic (organized by Tomas Bata University in Zlín). OPENING REMARKS MIROSLAV SINGER Governor, Czech National Bank, Czech Republic

Mr. Miroslav Singer was appointed a member of the CNB Bank Board and Vice- Governor in February 2005. The President appointed him CNB Governor for a term of six years with effect from 1 July 2010. Previously, he also worked as a researcher and lecturer, and later as Deputy Director for Research, at the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Centre for Economic Research and Graduate Education at Charles University. He was Chief Economist at Expandia Finance from 1995, Managing Director of Expandia Investment Company in 1998–1999 and Managing Director of Expandia Holding in 2000–2001. In 2001, Miroslav Singer joined PricewaterhouseCoopers Czech Republic as Director of the services to businesses group. WELCOMING REMARKS SONJA BATA, O.C., CANADA Chairman, Bata Shoe Foundation

Mrs. Sonja Bata was born in Switzerland and studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. After her marriage to Thomas J. Bata in 1946, she became involved in the operations of the Bata Shoe Organization and is a member of the Board of Directors. She is Chairman of the Bata Shoe Foundation. In addition, Mrs. Bata has served on a number of business boards, including Alcan Aluminium, Canada Trust, and the Canadian Commercial Corporation. She has also been active in many non-profi t organizations in the educational, health, and environmental fi elds and is the founding Chairman of the Bata Shoe and the Development Corporation. Mrs. Bata has received many national and international awards. In 1983, she was appointed Offi cer of the Order of Canada and holds honorary doctorates from several universities.

PROF. PETR SÁHA, CSC. Rector, Tomas Bata University in Zlín, Czech Republic

Professor Petr Sáha is the rector and one of the founders of Tomas Bata University in Zlin, Czech Republic (TBU). As a signifi cant scientist of exceptional ability, he has devoted his entire life to gathering and transmitting knowledge in the fi eld of science and education. He was president of the Polymer Processing Society from 2007 to 2009 and chairman of the Czech Rectors´ Conference. His lifelong achievements are connected with endeavors to enhance the quality of life in the Zlin Region of the Czech Republic by expanding the educational opportunities. He also supervises many doctoral programs. KEYNOTE SPEECH PETER BRABECK-LETMATHE Chairman of the Board of Directors, Nestlé, Austria/Switzerland

Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe led the Nestlé Group from 1997 to 2008, fi rst as CEO until 2005, and then as Chairman and CEO. In April 2008, he handed over the offi ce of CEO and remained Chairman of the Board of Nestlé S.A. Peter Brabeck- Letmathe serves as Vice-Chairman of both L’Oréal and Credit Suisse Group. He is Chairman of the “2030 Water Resources Group”, a Public Private Partnership housed in the IFC/World Bank, Washington. Mr. Brabeck-Letmathe is also the Chairman of the Board of Nestlé Health Science S.A. and of Delta Topco Limited (Formula 1). In addition, he is member of the Exxon Mobil Corporation Board. Born in 1944 in Austria, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe graduated from the University of World Trade in Vienna with a degree in Economics. He has received several awards, including the Schumpeter Prize for Outstanding Contribution in Disruptive Innovation, the Austrian Cross of Honour for services to the Republic of Austria and “La Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca”. The University of Alberta (Canada) conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws on him and he serves as the Chairman of its External Advisory Board. SPEAKERS DANIEL ANÝŽ, Commentator, Hospodářské noviny, Czech Republic

Mr. Daniel Anýž is foreign affairs commentator at the Czech daily paper Hospodarske noviny. His main interests are Czech foreign policy, NATO, EU, transatlantic relations and US policy. He graduated from the Columbia University Journalism Program at the Prague´s Center for Independent Journalism in 1992. He took part in the Mass Communication Training Program of Voice of America at the University of Georgia in 1994. He participated in the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, which is part of the Fulbright Exchange Program, at the University of Maryland in academic year 2001/2002. He was the US correspondent, based in Washington D.C., for Hospodarske noviny between from 2005 to 2010.

JAN BUBENÍK Founder and Managing Partner, Bubenik Partners, Czech Republic

Mr. Jan Bubeník founded, and has been leading, a personal advisory company Bubenik Partners for more than 10 years. He has been engaged in professional services focused on fi nancial services, modern technologies and the industrial sector for more than 15 years. He is a member of The Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and often lectures on topics related to the recruitment of employees and human leadership in Central and Eastern . He is a founding member and Chairman of the Corporate Council of the Forum 2000 Foundation.

PAVLÍNA KALOUSOVÁ Chairperson, Business for Society, Czech Republic

Mrs. Pavlína Kalousová is a sustainability ambassador. She founded and currently serves as Chairperson at the Business for Society, Czech Republic, leading association for the CSR and sustainable business that mobilizes and activates businesses and other key institutions on social issues, responsible business and sustainable performance. She has also been active in systemic changes for civil society sector, and since 2006 she has served as Deputy Chair of the Governmental Council for Civil Society and Chair of the Committee on Legal and Fiscal Affairs at the Governmental NGO Council. During her professional life she has worked with over 60 corporations on their CSR and sustainable strategies and projects. In the past she managed the Czech Donors Forum, national association for grantmakers and philanthropy where she focused on many legal changes and development of new giving instruments.

PŘEMYSL FILIP CSR Director, Vodafone CZ, Czech Republic

Mr. Přemysl Filip was awarded a degree in Environmental Sciences and Policy from the University of Manchester and graduated from the Technical University of Ostrava. He spent several years in managerial positions at companies such as ABB, Skoda Auto and T-Mobile and worked as an intern in the Netherlands and Japan. He currently leads the Corporate Responsibility department in Vodafone Czech Republic and serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Vodafone Foundation Czech Republic. Vodafone Czech Republic has repeatedly received corporate responsibility awards, such as the Top Corporate Philanthropist, CSR Award and Via Bona Award. Mr. Filip is Vice-Chairman of the Business Leaders Forum (BLF), Board member of Donors SMS (DMS) and lectures at Czech universities and abroad. “Service is the very life of business. Economic performance is important – without it we cannot survive – but it is not the sole responsibility of business today. The real role of business is to give a service by making and selling products that satisfy the wants and needs of society, and in doing so to be a caring organization in partnership with community and government.”
