  • For Immediate Release August 2017 Lucinda Williams
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 2017 LUCINDA WILLIAMS REIMAGINES HER 1992 CLASSIC SWEET OLD WORLD WITH 25TH ANNIVERSARY NEW RE-RECORDING OF ALBUM TITLED THIS SWEET OLD WORLD OUT SEPTEMBER 29th REINTERPRETATION OF CLASSIC ALBUM INCLUDES FRESH ARRANGEMENTS, ADDITIONAL LYRICS AND BONUS TRACKS Nashville, TN — On September 29th, three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams will release This Sweet Old World (Highway 20/ThirtyTigers), a re-recording of her beloved 1992 album Sweet Old World to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its release. See the exclusive announcement, interview and premiere of “Six Blocks Away” at Rolling Stone Country. Produced by Williams and Tom Overby, This Sweet Old World features fresh updated interpretations of songs such as “Prove My Love”, “Sidewalks of the City”, “Memphis Pearl” and “Lines Around Your Eyes”. With her deeply soulful voice and wisdom gained over the last 25 years, Williams breathes new life into classics “Pineola”, “Sweet Old World”, “Something About What Happens When We Talk”, “Little Angel, Little Brother” and Nick Drake’s “Which Will”. The third track on the 1992’s Sweet Old World, “He Never Got Enough Love” is transformed with additional verses, new sound and new title, “Drivin’ Down A Dead End Street”, which was the song’s original title. Williams changed it upon the realization that Bob Dylan had a current album with a similar name. The arrangements on This Sweet Old World are tighter and rawer than the original and feature Williams’ fantastic touring/studio band: guitarist Stuart Mathis, bassist David Sutton, and drummer Butch Norton. Guitarist Greg Leisz, who actually participated in the early sessions for the 1992 album, adds his masterful playing to the new recordings.

  • Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: an Analysis Into Graphic Design's
Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • LUCINDA WILLIAMS This Sweet Old World
LUCINDA WILLIAMS This Sweet Old World In a rare instance of an artist taking a full-length reconsideration of an earlier work, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams will release This Sweet Old World – a complete re-recording of her 1992 album Sweet Old World – via Highway 20/Thirty Tigers on Sept. 29. Produced by Williams and Tom Overby, This Sweet Old World -- recorded to mark the 25th anniversary of the original album’s release by Chameleon/Elektra -- features all- new renditions of the ’92 set’s 12 songs, some of which have been dramatically rearranged and rewritten. On This Sweet Old World, Williams is supported by her touring and studio band: guitarist Stuart Mathis, bassist David Sutton, and drummer Butch Norton. Longtime collaborator Greg Leisz – who participated in early sessions for the 1992 album, and co- produced Williams’ most recent studio releases, The Ghosts of Highway 20 (2016) and Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone (2014) – contributes spectacular guitar work. The package is augmented by four newly recorded bonus tracks that harken back to Williams’ early performing career. Sweet Old World contained several durable songs – the title track, “Pineola,” “Something About What Happens When We Talk,” and “Little Angel Little Brother” – that have been staples of Williams’ live sets since their original release. However, the album as a whole has received comparatively short shrift, coming as it did between two landmarks in the musician’s career: her breakthrough self-titled album (issued by Rough Trade Records in 1988, and re-released in 2014 with a bonus CD of live material) and her major commercial hit Car Wheels On a Gravel Road (released by Mercury in 1998).

  • Thesis an Indie Hype Cycle Built for Two: a Case Study
THESIS AN INDIE HYPE CYCLE BUILT FOR TWO: A CASE STUDY OF THE PITCHFORK ALBUM REVIEWS OF ARCADE FIRE AND CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH Submitted by Samuel R. Ernst Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2012 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Jonathan Lupo David Scott Diffrient Deborah Thompson ABSTRACT AN INDIE HYPE CYCLE BUILT FOR TWO: A CASE STUDY OF THE PITCHFORK ALBUM REVIEWS OF ARCADE FIRE AND CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH This thesis investigates the whims of critical reception in the indie rock world and its effects upon the hype cycle. I define the indie hype cycle as a naturalized communicative process governing the flow of critical favor within the indie music community and identify its four primary phases as entrance on to the scene, hype generation, backlash, and obscurity/visibility. To understand the interaction between the hype cycle and critical reception, the project focuses on Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CYHSY) as two bands emblematic of the critical divergence possible after initial success. It compares the reviews of the bands’ debut and sophomore albums by Pitchfork, a prominent indie music website, and identifies genre, elitism, and authenticity as key constructs in the way the site frames the bands as indie, and thus, worthy of praise. I argue that an economy of authenticity—featuring emotional, economic, and talent- based forms—affects the indie hype cycle in a variety of ways. The thesis concludes that the mechanics of indie music criticism have extensive influence upon the indie hype cycle.
