chrysobalanus icaco (cocoplum, paradise plum, abajeru or icaco) Chrysobalanus icaco is a shrub with evergreen broad-oval to nearly round somewhat leathery leaves, clustered flowers are small, greenish-white, and appear intermittently throughout the year but more abundantly in late spring. The fruit that follows up to 5 cm in diameter, white, pale-yellow with a rose blush or dark-purple in color and is edible, sometimes used for jam. Our native plants and animals have developed over millions of years to live in harmony: pigeons eat fruits and then disperse seeds, hummingbirds pollinate flowers while sipping nectar. While many plants can benefit birds, native plants almost always do so best due to the partnerships they have developed over the ages. It is a 7.5 acre conservation area, owned by the City of Key West. The KWBG requested that The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) conduct a floristic evaluation of its natural areas and grounds and to provide recommendations. Study Design On August 9-10, 2005 an inventory of all vascular plants was conducted at the KWBG. All areas of the KWBG were visited, including the newly acquired property to the south. Special attention was paid toward the remnant natural habitats. A preliminary plant list was established. Plant taxonomy generally follows Wunderlin (1998) and Bailey et al. (1976). Results Five distinct habitats were recorded for the KWBG. Two of which are human altered and are artificial being classified as developed upland and modified wetland. In addition, three natural habitats are found at the KWBG. They are coastal berm (here termed buttonwood hammock), rockland hammock, and tidal swamp habitats. Developed and Modified Habitats Garden and Developed Upland Areas The developed upland portions include the maintained garden areas as well as the cleared parking areas, building edges, and paths.

Woody and Herbaceous Plants Native to Haiti For use in Miami-Dade Landscapes1 Haiti occupies the western one third of the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic the remainder. Of all the islands within the Caribbean basin Hispaniola possesses the most varied flora after that of Cuba. The plants contained in this review have been recorded as native to Haiti, though some may now have been extirpated due in large part to severe deforestation. Less than 1.5% of the country’s original tree-cover remains. Haiti’s future is critically tied to re- forestation; loss of tree cover has been so profound that exotic fast growing trees, rather than native species, are being used to halt soil erosion and lessen the risk of mudslides. For more information concerning Haiti’s ecological plight consult references at the end of this document. For present purposes all of the trees listed below are native to Haiti, which is why non-natives such as mango (the most widely planted tree) and other important trees such as citrus, kassod tree (Senna siamea) and lead tree (Leucanea leucocephala) are not included. The latter two trees are among the fast growing species used for re-forestation. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s Flora of the West Indies was an invaluable tool in assessing the range of plants native to Haiti. Río de Hierba, Estilo Cubano By Amy Ferriter La Habana Laguna del Ciénaga de Zapata Tesoro The Zapata Swamp is the Everglades, Cuban style. Located about 100 miles south of Havana, this southern coast of the island will forever be known for the infamous 1961 “Operation Zapata” or Bahía de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) invasion. Now, however, it is home to the Ciénaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve – Cuba’s largest En Senada protected area and a region designated as a Wetland of de la Broa International Importance. The Zapata is a 1.5 million acre mosaic of fresh and saltwater marshes, mangroves, palm savannahs and hammocks growing on a layer of peat covering a limestone plain. It includes vast Playa Girón expanses of sawgrass dotted with occasional tree islands, almost MIRIAM LABRADA mirroring the Everglades. Nearly all of Cuba’s 25 endemic birds breed there. Davis 5 , Jerome Murienne 2 , Roosevelt García-Villacorta 6 , Eric Coissac 7 , Sébastien Lavergne 7 , and Jérôme Chave 2,8 PREMISE OF THE STUDY: The complex geological and climatic history of the Neotropics has had major implications on the diversifi cation of plant lineages. Chrysobalanaceae is a pantropical family of trees and shrubs with 75% of its 531 species found in the Neotropics, and a time-calibrated phylogeny of this family should shed light on the tempo of diversifi cation in the Neotropical fl ora. Previously published phylogenetic hypotheses of this family were poorly supported, and its biogeography remains unclear. METHODS: We assembled the complete plastid genome of 51 Chrysobalanaceae species, and increased taxon sampling by Sanger-sequencing of fi ve plastid regions for an additional 88 species. We generated a time-calibrated tree including all 139 Chrsyobalanaceae species and 23 outgroups. We then conducted an ancestral area reconstruction analysis and estimated diversifi cation rates in the family. KEY RESULTS: The tree generated with the plastid genome alignment was almost fully resolved. It supports the polyphyly of Licania and Hirtella . The family has diversifi ed starting around the Eocene-Oligocene transition. An ancestral area reconstruction confi rms a Paleotropical origin for Chrysobalanaceae with several transoceanic dispersal events. The main Neotropical clade likely resulted from a single migration event from Africa around 28 mya ago, which subsequently underwent rapid diversifi cation.
