Barna Páll-Gergely ([email protected]) Received: 30 May 2020; Accepted: 22 June 2020 ABSTRACT.– Three species of non-marine snails (Georissa subglabrata Möllendorff, 1887, G. regularis Quadras & Möllendorff, 1895, and G. turritella Möllendorff, 1893) and one subspecies (G. subglabrata cebuensis Möllendorff, 1887) from the Philippines are reassigned from Georissa Blanford 1864 (Hydrocenidae Troschel, 1857) to Acmella Blanford, 1869 (Assimineidae H. Adams & A. Adams, 1856) based on shell characters. This is the very first checklist of the terrestrial snails of Dien Bien Province. The checklists provide databases and helps to understand the biodiversity richness of the particular region of country. As such, they also open trends for further research priorities. Altogether 80 species and subspecies of terrestrial snails belonging to 17 families, 49 genera are listed with 5 genera (Lagocheilus, Metalycaeus, Scabrina, Laotia, and Moellendorffia) and 36 new species recorded for Dien Bien Province. Land Snails of Dåno′ (Cocos Island), Mariana Islands1 Alexander M. Kerr 2,3,5 and G. Curt Fiedler 4 Abstract: We performed the first survey of terrestrial gastropods on Dåno′ (Cocos Island). Dåno′ is a 0.33 km2 uninhabited atoll island located 2.5 km southwest of Guam, the largest island in the Mariana archipelago, western Micronesia. In 4 days of examining vegetation, soil, and leaf litter, we found 14 species of mollusks arrayed in 12 genera and 11 taxonomic families. The fauna is a subset of that found on Guam. Five species are native to the Mariana Islands, two of which are endemic to the archipelago, and the remaining seven are likely introduced there, perhaps prehistorically. Ground-inhabiting species found only as abundant worn shells in soil suggest relatively recent turnover of these forms, perhaps from seawater inundation of the low-lying island during typhoons. There was no evidence of Mariana endemic snails in the family Partulidae, recently afforded legal protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. How- ever, neither did we encounter the invasive flatwormPlatydemus manokwari De Beauchamp, currently decimating partulids elsewhere in the Marianas. Hence, we suggest that if further surveys confirm the predator’s absence, Dåno′ might serve as a novel sanctuary for transplanted populations of Guam’s most en- dangered snails. SMITH Marine Laboratory University of Guam Mangilao, Guam 96923 U.S.A. email: [email protected] Abstract—Based on records from invertebrate collections at the University of Guam, specimens cataloged at other institutions, and the published literature, there are 895 species of prosobranch gastropods from Guam. The vast majority of the species are marine, but terrestrial and aquatic prosobranchs are included. Most the species recorded to date are conspicuous, epibenthic species from shallow reef habitats, but some species have been taken from depths up to 400 m. Microgastropods less than 7 mm in size have been poorly investigated to date. Comparison of prosobranch gastropods from Guam and Enewetak reveal that some 56% of the species occurring at Enewetak are found in Guam. Introduction Molluscs have been collected in Guam since the arrival of the earliest inhabitants (Thompson, 1945). Despite the long history of European contact with the island, scant attention was given to systematic investigation of the fauna until the collections of Quoy and Gaimard (1824–1826; 1830–1834). Hidalgo (1904– 1905) was the first to produce a catalog that included molluscs from Guam, but his emphasis was mostly on the Philippine Islands fauna. This catalog was followed by a series of unpublished lists produced by shell collectors and shell club members during the last several decades. Synoptic collections of molluscs from Guam and Micronesia were started by faculty of the University of Guam in the mid-1960s. These collections are housed in the Richard E. Dickinson Memorial Mollusc Collection at the University of Guam Marine Laboratory. -

CHAPTER 13 Phylum Mollusca olluscs include some of the best-known invertebrates; almost everyone is familiar with snails, clams, slugs, squids, and octopuses. Molluscan shells have been popular since ancient times, and some cultures still M use them as tools, containers, musical devices, money, fetishes, reli- gious symbols, ornaments, and decorations and art objects. Evidence of histori- cal use and knowledge of molluscs is seen in ancient texts and hieroglyphics, on coins, in tribal customs, and in archaeological sites and aboriginal kitchen middens or shell mounds. Royal or Tyrian purple of ancient Greece and Rome, and even Biblical blue (Num. 15:38), were molluscan pigments extracted from certain marine snails.1 Many aboriginal groups have for millenia relied on mol- luscs for a substantial portion of their diet and for use as tools. Barker Landcare Research, Private Bag 3127 Hamilton, New Zealand Abstract -Alan Solem highlighted the high alpha diversity of land snails that occur in forests of mid-western North Island New Zealand, This paper examines patterns of diversity in land snails across the entire New Zealand archipelago, with a review of the biogeography and composition of taxon groups and with analyses of faunal composition and ecological diversity at national, island and bioregion scales based primarily on collation of museum records, Community composition and structure are also analysed using two extensive series of plot-based assessments, The fauna is primarily Gondwanan in origin, with apparently little influence from establishment of new taxa by chance dispersal since the late Paleocene. It has undergone extensive in situ cladogenesis and speciation that, combined with island biogeographic processes of dispersal and extinction, have resulted in marked intra- archipelago differences in the character of regional species pools.
