Jazz Fridays, April 1 –22 at 9 p.m. The Robinson family Explore the evolution – and the genius – of America’s greatest original art form, focusing on the extraordi- nary men and women who could do something remark- able: create art on the spot.Their profoundly enduring, endlessly varied and infinitely alluring music is cele- brated in the context of the complicated country that Billie Holiday gave birth to it and was, in turn, transformed by it. Complex and engaging portraits include many of the greatest figures in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Bix Beiderbecke, Fletcher Henderson, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Much more than the evolution of the music alone, this 10-part series is also about sex, romance and the rituals of courtship in America; it is about joy, celebration, and having a good time; it is about the rise of records, radio and television; it is about min- strels, lynching and the struggle for civil rights; it is about the sufferings of the Great Depression and the sacrifices our nation made in two world wars; it is about drugs, Meanwhile, in Stamford, Connecticut, the dissipation and pain – and the life-affirming art that comes out of it all.
