Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Christmas time for many is travel time. Today’s Gospel tells of Mary’s journey to her cousin Elizabeth, to assist in the birth of John the Baptist. Mary’s travel was an act of charity. Not thinking of herself and her own expectation of a Child, she sacrificed her own comfort in order to help her cousin. Mary is a model of Christmas giving. Members of our parish will travel to be with relatives and friends for Christmas. We Fr. Paul Schmidt pray that they may have safe journeys. Friends and relatives will be with us here at St.

Joseph, to celebrate with our parishioners. We welcome all who are here from afar.

Welcome to those who come from other faith communities, those who have come to worship with family on this important day. Welcome to those who have returned to the Church through the Sacrament of Penance. We hope to be a welcoming community today

and throughout the year.

Catholics are celebrating a Year of Faith this year, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict

XVI, has asked us to spend the year reflecting on the teachings of the Council, and the

summary of faith given in the Catechism of the Catholic Faith. This is an opportunity for us

to strengthen the faith we have or to recover the faith we may have lost. Our Catholic Faith

is a wonderful treasure. We should know it well and practice it with loyalty and devotion. “May we all be Those who have been away for a while may notice that the prayers sound different. born anew in We are using a new English translation of the Roman Missal, which tries to capture more of the Latin original than was in the former translation. The new translation makes evident faith, as we more of the Biblical references in the prayers. It also tries to address God in a more reverent fashion. (If you have been away for a really, really long time, you may notice that we are celebrate the praying in English, not Latin!) Former Catholics are the largest “denomination” in the United States. Some have birth of the joined other Christian or non-Christian churches. Others simply no longer have a religion. It is sad that some feel they have to move to another church “to find Jesus.” He is here in the one in whom Catholic Church, present in its people, its teachings, its worship. Jesus is really present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, in the Sacrifice of the Mass, in the tabernacle of the church. we believe.” We pray that many may rediscover him here. It is a tragedy when people wind up with no religion at all. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He shows us the way to live. He teaches us the truth. He gives us eternal life. The world without Jesus is a sad place, full of violence, licentiousness, greed. We have evidence every day that we need the Savior to make our world livable. In this Year of Faith we hope that many will make a journey of faith, as Mary made

her journey to Elizabeth. Those with strong faith will intensify their faith. Those of weak

faith will move to stronger faith. Those who have lost faith will find it again. And those who

have never had it may discover it and the peace it brings.

May we all be born anew in faith, as we celebrate the birth of the one in whom we

believe. May Jesus Christ, “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,”

whose birth as a human being we celebrate, give us a new birth, which will redirect our ways on earth and guide us on the journey to eternal life.
