  • Q&A: Meet KVOO's Dena Fletcher Honor Roll
August 26 2019, Issue 668 Q&A: Meet KVOO’s Dena Fletcher Newly minted KVOO/Tulsa PD Dena Fletcher (CAT 7/12) spent more than a dozen years at crosstown Cox Classic Rock KSJR before making the move to Country. Her trip across the street reunites her with Griffin/Tulsa Dir./Radio Operations & Programming Steve Hunter, who gave Fletcher her first PD gig in 2007. She spoke with Country Aircheck about her radio roots, her programming philosophy and what most appeals to her about Country radio. CA: When were you first bitten by the radio bug? DF: During junior college in Odessa, Texas, I was focused on journalism, but a friend Dena Fletcher suggested a give radio a try for fun. College radio was so much fun that by my second semester, I was the student PD – probably because no one else wanted the job. It was actual work and didn’t pay, but I loved it. Shortly thereafter, I started Indy Go: Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean (c) in Indianapolis with working at a local Rock station and it was off to the races. (l-r) WFMS’ Boomer Layfield, Albright & O’Malley & Brenner’s Do you recall your earliest memories of interacting Dan VanLandingham, the label’s Dawn Ferris, WLHK’s Cara with radio as a medium and a listener? Denis, WFMS’ Adam Kashner and WLHK’s Krystal Keithley, Kyle Knezevich and Jackie Robinson. Like most radio people, I was hanging out in my room listening to the radio as a kid. I lived in a fairly remote part of West Texas, so that was my connection to the rest of the world.

  • Romans #6 - Crazy Grace Bad News for “Good” People
Romans #6 - Crazy Grace Bad News For “Good” People - Well, are you having a good day? - [Audience] Yes. - I'm about to ruin it. We're in Romans 3. We're going through a great book of the Bible. We're in Romans 3 and in Romans 1 and 2, Paul tells us that God's evaluation of the human condition is that we are sinners that we're fallen, that we're the problem, and we're not the solution. It's a bit like going to your doctor and your doctor being really honest with you. I'll give you an example from my own life. Some years ago, I wasn't doing well physically, I had allergies and I was getting bloody noses and I couldn't sleep, and I had heartburn and I was just not well, I had a nervous eye twitch because I was stressed, everybody in the church thought I was flirting with them. I wasn't, I was just a little freaked out. And what happened then was, one of my kids, looked at grace who was in the third trimester with one of our soon to be born children and looked at me and said, "Daddy, are you having a baby too?" And I was like, "No, I'm having an ice cream baby. I need to make some lifestyle changes." So I go to the doctor and the doctor says "Okay, you need a heartburn medicine, you need sleep medicine. You need anxiety meds, all of these medicines. And so then you do the terrifying thing where you look at the potential side effects.

September 3 2019, Issue 669 Pick Six: Label Draft 2019 Seven years ago, Country Aircheck’s Fantasy Label Draft began as an entertaining forum for radio pros to chat about artists and make bold predictions for the year to come. For the first six seasons, VP/GM Chuck Aly served as commissioner and declared winners based upon a method that is just questionable enough to have come from the New England Patriots’ camp, “Chuck’s Eyeball Test.” But this is 2019, and all bets are off. No participation trophies here! What good is a game without a winner? And how do you declare a winner without a score? As a new commissioner takes the field, a painstaking analysis was done to determine a fair- yet-competitive points system, which has been ratified by this year’s ownership group – KUPL/Portland’s MoJoe Roberts; KFRG/ Riverside, CA’s Heather Kind Of A Pig Deal: Premiere’s Bobby Bones, coach Chad Morris, Froglear; KRYS/Corpus Valory’s Justin Moore and singer/songwriter Joe Nichols (l-r) at MoJoe Roberts Kay Manley the Arkansas Razorbacks game Saturday (8/31). • Do You Believe in Hell? Belcroft Bible Church Pastor Matt White 6 June 2021
Do You Believe in Hell? Belcroft Bible Church Pastor Matt White 6 June 2021 Please turn in your copy of God's Word to Mark, Mark chapter 9, verses 42 to 48, Mark chapter 9, verses 42 to 48. It's been a few weeks since I've been here, but that should be no shock to anybody that that's where we turn this morning. We go back to our verse-by-verse exposition of this gospel account. And, just by way of reminder, I want all of us to be clear that John Mark’s purpose in writing this book is our passion as we study it. We have been years in this journey through Mark that we might—here you go—see Christ rightly, in order to submit to him and follow him fully. Today, we learn once more at the feet of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But I warn you that what he will teach us this morning deals with one of the most difficult and hated truths in all the Scriptures, the reality and ramifications of hell. You follow along silently, now, as I read our passage aloud. Hear the word of the Lord: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.

  • 'Hell Joseon' Is More Like It As Economy Flounders
LUND UNIVERSITY • CENTRE FOR EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN STUDIES ‘Hell Joseon’ - Tales from a South Korean Youth Trapped Between Past and Present Author: Johan Cornelis Schoonhoven Supervisor: Erik Mobrand Master’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2017 Abstract This thesis takes its outset in the newly coined expression ‘Hell Joseon’ used by the youth in South Korea. ‘Hell Joseon’ is a comparison between today’s society and the pre-modern Joseon Dynasty. By asking “what are the main characteristics of life in ‘Hell Joseon’ from a youth perspective?”, I arrive at the following conclusion. Life in ‘Hell Joseon’ is highly characterized by discrepancies between rich and poor, old and young, men and women, global and local. This is a peculiar result of Korea’s double-compressed modernity which derives from a colonial legacy, top-down modernization in the post-war era and condensed transition to a neoliberal world economy, also known as the second modernity. Therefore, traditional and (post)modern elements coexist in Korea’s society, and is partly the reason why the youth are now drawing references to the pre-modern Joseon Dynasty. Life in ‘Hell Joseon’ thus implies frustrations over high unemployment rates, a new ‘spoon class’ class division, lack of social mobility, an education fever and a downright “gender war”. More than that, it shows traces of apathy in the fact that the young generation is giving up marriage, children, jobs, hope, housing etc., but also traces of transformation since the ‘Hell Joseon’ discourse have made the youth take it to the streets, last seen in the mass demonstrations against now impeached President Park Geun-hye.

Why Jesus is Hated Mark 12:1-12 Rev. Brian Bill September 23-24, 2017 I wanted to apologize for something. I feel badly that I’ve let something slide. Many of you are no doubt wondering about it so I thought I better make it right. Pardon me for going a couple months without showing pictures of our grandson. Here’s a recent picture of Pip on a swing at a park. He’s also really into books. I mean, really into books. He loves being read to and following the storyline. At his age he prefers books with few words and lots of pictures (like his grandpa). Many of us first heard stories from our parents or grandparents (by the way, our newest Growth Group is called Extreme Grandparenting – it meets right here at 4:00 pm on Sundays). His dad Jamie describes the process Pip goes through when he’s read to: “His eyes comb the surface as if he’s afraid he’ll miss something as you read…sometimes he’ll bring you the same book a hundred times in a day and sometimes it’s a new book every ten seconds.” Lydia says, “He will bring a book and put it in our hands or lap to let us know he wants to read it. He has favorites where he copies word sounds and points out characters and things on the pages.” In a similar way, young Israelite children were well versed in certain stories and allegories. Most would have grown up knowing that the grapevine was an illustration of Israel.

  • A Reminder to Breathe a Piece of Mike's Mind
1 Ploughshare November Volume 2019 Issue 11 Ploughshare A Piece of Mike’s Mind by Rev. Mike Morran Several people have recently asked me about my upcoming class: SoUUlful Living; an Introduction to Living A Spiritual Life as a Unitarian Universalist. SoUUlful Living had its genesis during my first sabbatical about ten years ago. It was becoming clear that First Unitarian did a fine job teaching a religiously liberal philosophy, but that was only scratching the surface, especially for many of our newer members. On that sabbatical, wanted to explore; how can we take our deepest core values and our rich theological history and move into the future, growing in ways that are…: a) religiously grounded, b) radically inclusive and inherently communal, c) include specific methods and disciplines for spiritual growth, d) are systematically teachable, and e) that individuals and communities could actually practice and feel the results of? Please see Mind on page 2 Inside This Issue A Reminder to Breathe by Erin Kenworthy, DRE 1 A Piece of Mike’s Mind Two years ago, our youth hosted a worship service and they used 1 A Reminder to Breathe a song from the original Disney movie, The Lion King, to set the tone as 4 President’s Corner we sent our graduating youth into their young adulthood. I think it was 6 The Culture of Clapping meant as an encouragement and an optimistic warning, rather than a 7 A Prayer statement on the very real turn of affairs that had taken place on our 8 Whole Souul Living national stage.
