hen you hear the phrase “Wine Country” it most likely calls to mind places such as Bordeaux, France - Tuscany, Italy - or Sonoma, California. And when you think of the Smoky Mountain Region as a wine country - the concept probably sounds odd, foreign - at first. However, many would be surprised to find out that this region has been vastly underutilized in it’s abilityW to grow grapes. There are five known vineyards with wineries in Western North Carolina and North Georgia - Calaboose Cellars in Andrews, Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris, Valley River Vineyards in Murphy, Habersham Winery in Helen, and Cartecay Vineyards in Ellijay. However, the potential for even more wineries is something yet to be realized....

orth Carolina is truly a region with a “personality” like no other. The moun- tains are among the oldest on earth. TheyN have more diversity of plant and animal life than the whole of Europe. They are home to the highest mountain (Mount Mitchell), the deepest gorge (Linville Gorge) and the highest waterfall (Whitewater Falls) in the eastern United States, the oldest river (the New River) in North Amer- ica, and the two most visited National Parks (the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park) in the country. Out of the mountains has grown a rich cul- tural heritage. The birthplace of the Cherokee’s advanced early civilization, they are, today, home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians which continues to preserve many facets of traditional Cherokee culture. Beginning in the eighteenth century European and African settlers moved into the mountains. The relative isolation of mountain life helped these settlers nourish and preserve many traditions, especially handmade crafts. The area has become the center of hand- made art and craft in America, with a rich legacy of both traditional and contemporary craft schools and over 4,000 working craftspeople. The mountains also proved a fertile meeting ground for European and African music traditions, and Go online For More Info: over time these traditions melded to create the http://blueridgeparkway75.org/events/calendar/month/2010/10 | http://blueridgeparkway75.org/events/calendar/ unique music of Appalachia. month/2010/11 | http://www.blueridgeheritage.com/attractions-destinations/festivals-and-events This rich heritage is preserved by America’s Favorite Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway, cel- ebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010, and by the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. Designated by Congress and the President in November, 2003, the Heritage Area is a non-profit agency whose mission is to protect, preserve, interpret, and develop the unique natural, historical, and cultural resources of Western North Carolina for the benefit of present and future generations, and in so doing to stimulate improved economic op- portunity in the region.
