Member Benefits – Affiliate Club Access Worldwide Member Benefits 2018 Affiliate Club Access Worldwide For a number of years, the University Club has been working on increasing its network of clubs with which it has reciprocal agreements, so that as a UCT member you can access any one of hundreds of clubs worldwide and make use of their facilities as you would your own. The list of clubs with whom we have agreements has increased exponentially, largely through the auspices of a special arrangement with the International Associate group of clubs. The University Club pays a yearly fee on behalf of its members to access this additional group of affiliations. The IACs organisation has focussed on parts of the world where we had less experience, but where there is an increasing demand for services, such as the Gulf, Asia and middle Europe. As a result, you now have over 300 clubs you can access with your University Club membership. Given the number of changes, you might enjoy taking a few moments to peruse the new list and begin making plans for your next business trip, or, more enjoyably, some personal travel! When you are planning on making a trip, contact the club you wish to visit and make your reservation. The next step is to contact our front desk staff and request a letter of introduction which will cover the period of your visit. Letters are generally good for thirty days, and they confirm that you are a member in good standing. Our front desk can be reached at: [email protected]. Special arrangements can be made in extended stay circumstances if you contact the General Manager. Please request a copy of the letter of introduction that the front desk will send to the affiliate, since it is always safer to have the introduction on your person when you walk through the door just in case. It is also wise to ask that your confirmation number be referenced in the introduction letter - most clubs will provide some type of confirmation code when you make your booking. Note that arriving at an affiliate without a letter of introduction will likely result in being turned away. Use of any affiliate is subject to the rules of the host club, most of whom will require that you settle your account before departure. Each club has its own dress code and rules of conduct. Please ensure that you refer to their website for details in advance. There are several advantages of making use of the affiliates. The first is that you may not know the country or city well, and don’t want to go wrong; with an affiliate you are assured that the standard is one that you will feel comfortable with. The second is the cost; there are many members who concur that they cover the cost of their UCT annual dues simply by using affiliates a few times a year. Clubs in general charge well under local hotel rates as most operate as not-for-profits and exist for the benefit of their membership – and ours once we have the benefit of reciprocity.   • Who Founded the East India Club?
    Who founded the East India Club? There has long been an assumption that the East India Company founded the club. This is probably not correct. The exact origins of the East India Club are indistinct. Several versions of our founding exist. A report in The Times of 6 July 1841 refers to the East India Club Rooms at 26 Suffolk Street, off Pall Mall East. It says that the rooms are open for the accommodation of the civil and military officers, of Her Majesty’s and the Hon. East India Company’s service, members of Parliament, and private and professional gentlemen. The clubrooms seem to have been in use for some time because the report also exhorts Major D D Anderson, Madam Fitzgerald, Captain Alfred Lewis, Mr M Farquhar from Canada, Lieutenant Edward Stewart, and another Stewart Esquire to come and pick up their unclaimed letters. This is supported by Sir Arthur Happel, Indian Civil Service (1891 to 1975) who says that the club grew out of a hostel for East India Company servants maintained in London to help them with leave problems. The records of the East India United Services Club date from 1851. An article of July 1853 cited in Foursome in St James’s states that the club as we know it was born at a meeting held at the British Hotel in Cockspur Street in February 1849. The consequence was the acquisition of No 16 St James’s Square as the clubhouse, and the holding of an inaugural dinner there on 1 January 1850. Edward Boehm – who owned the house in 1815 when Major Percy presented the French Eagles to the Prince Regent after the Battle of Waterloo on 21 June – went bankrupt, and a Robert Vyner bought it from him.

    The quarterly newsletter of the University Club of Toronto September, 2016 Editor: Donald Rumball As the quartet’s residency coincides with their project to perform all of Beethoven’s string quartets, we are the beneficiaries of an extraordinary learning opportunity. Prior to each concert, the quartet introduces us to the music we are about to hear by playing extracts and illustrating how the piece is put together. They show us how experimental Beethoven was in his time, and how startlingly modern some of his work still sounds. We also get a sense of how the quartet functions as individual voices within the strict discipline of the string quartet idiom, giving credence to a comment often attributed to Goethe, “One hears four intelligent people conversing with one another, and believes one might learn something from their discourse.” Tapestry Opera We will continue to collaborate with Tapestry Opera, who presented two opera evenings last season: one featuring opera Diana Wiley introducing the New Orford String Quartet stars mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó and tenor David at a concert held in the lounge Pomeroy, who filled the Library with thrilling sounds in an evening of best-loved opera arias; and the other a working Music programming @uct rehearsal with the full orchestra and cast of a brand new opera that was performed to critical acclaim a week later. Members of the club enjoy the extraordinary benefit of choosing from a plethora of four and five star accommodations and facilities in nearly every major city during business and personal travels.
