Tom Sachs, Born in New York in 1966, Is a Sculptor Known for His Work Inspired by Icons of Modernism and Design
TOM SACHS Tom Sachs, born in New York in 1966, is a sculptor known for his work inspired by icons of modernism and design. Using modest studio materials, Sachs creates parallel universes incorporating semi-functional sculpture, sometimes deployed by the artist and his studio assistants for interactive projects, as in Nutsy’s (2001—3) and Space Program (2007, 2012, 2016—17). Sachs’ work is in the collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and Astrup Fearnley Museet for Moderne Kunst, Oslo among others. He has had solo exhibitions at Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Noguchi Museum, New York; Brook- lyn Museum, New York; Contemporary Austin, Texas; Park Avenue Armory, New York; Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Lever House, New York; Fondazione Prada, Milan; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Bohen Foundation, New York; and SITE Santa Fe, among others. His film A Space Program was released by Zeitgeist in 2016, offering viewers a glimpse into the artist’s studio practice, philosophy, and the narrative surrounding his 2012 project with Creative Time at the Park Avenue Armory. Sachs lives and works in New York. Peter Halley New York, New York
Peter Halley New York, New York Lever House Art Collection, New York 390 Park Avenue, New York September 20 through December 2018 Lever House Art Collection is pleased to present New York, New York, a site-specific commission by New York artist Peter Halley (b. 1953). The large-scale installation encompasses Lever House’s ground-floor lobby in addition to the dramatic block-long band of windows ringing the building’s second floor. The exhibition includes six large shaped-canvas paintings as well as a sequence of digitally-generated mural works hidden within a seemingly impenetrable block-like central structure. In this two-floor immersive installation, Halley uses the circuit-like compositions of his paintings as inspiration for the lobby’s layout, inviting viewers to feel as if they are walking through the space created by one of his paintings. Yellow window film on the exterior windows and yellow- tinted ceiling lighting create an artificial, irradiated presence. “The installation is foremost a series of changing scales. The sweeping band of yellow light on the second floor can be seen at night from blocks away. The paintings in the first-floor lobby address the viewer at street level. Then within the lobby, the structure I built to support the paintings has an interior passageway, leading into two hidden rooms, invisible to passersby on the street.” Eschewing the confinement of his rectilinear abstract paintings, the interior of the central structure is reminiscent of the “low-budget mysticism” advocated by Robert Smithson — as frequently cited by Halley. Upon entering, the visitor encounters an interior hallway intricately collaged with images from Halley’s notebooks of the 1980s — chronicling the development of Halley’s paintings in the early 80s. -

Visiting Artist: Tom Sachs Wednesday, November 29, 6:30 Pm Sleeper Auditorium About the Artist
Visiting Artist: Tom Sachs Wednesday, November 29, 6:30 pm Sleeper Auditorium About the artist Tom Sachs is an interdisciplinary artist known for his intricate, hand-built reconstructions of American cultural detritus. Utilitarian objects, luxury goods, artifacts from the NASA space program are combined and reimagined using makeshift materials, laboriously assembled by hand. Simultaneously playful and critical, Sachs’ work looks closely at consumerism and capitalist iconography to create tensions between high and low culture, the handmade and the mass- produced, labor and leisure, and the venerated and the overlooked. Sachs has exhibited internationally, and has work in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., to name a few. Installation view, Bohen Foundation, New York. Courtesy of Sperone Westwater, New York. This conversation took place on the occasion of Tom Sachs’s recent exhibition at the Bohen Foundation in the meatpacking district of New York. Nutsy’s is a commissioned work that will travel to the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin later this year. We started out talking in the back room of an industrial supplier near Tom’s studio, a reminder of what lower Manhattan once was like.
