Alcoa, Rankin win milestone gridiron championship 45-12 By Ken Lay

COOKEVILLE – If football programs and coaches are judged by state championships Gary Rankin is Tennessee’s best high school football coach and Alcoa is among the best teams in the Volunteer State. The Tornadoes won their 15th State Title Friday when they routed Liberty Tech 45-12 Friday night at Tennessee Tech’s Tucker Stadium. They’re now tied with Maryville, which didn’t get a chance to play for another championship in 2016 as it was dumped in the Class 6A Semifinals by Murfreesboro-Oakland on Thanksgiv- ing Weekend. The Rebels missed a trip to the Blue Cross Bowl for the first time since 2003. Rankin guided Alcoa back to the Blue Cross Bowl Class 3A Title Game again and he won his 12th State Championship and picked up his 100th postseason victory in the process. Maryville coach George Quarles has 11 state championships and now trails Rankin, who won titles at Riverdale before coming to East Ten- nessee, by one championship. Continued on page 4
