The Mobile-based real estate development firm unveiled details for a master-planned industrial park, South Alabama Logistics Park (SALP). “With over 6 million square feet planned in phase 1, this development would not only be the largest in the state but one of the largest in the Southeast,” said Philip Burton, president of Burton Property Group. A three-year collaborative effort between the Alabama State Port Authority, Burton Property Group, City of Mobile, Mobile County and the Mobile Area of Chamber of Commerce, the 1,300-acre park will be located off I-10 near the Theodore Dawes exit, just south of the Amazon sortation center in South Mobile County. At full build-out of the initial phase, Burton estimates the development will exceed $350 million in value. Features include Class A industrial warehouse and distribution space for the growing number of shippers and light manufacturers that need to locate in close proximity to either the Port of Mobile or Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley. Burton Property Group is expecting to close on the property this summer, and is in the process of investing in needed infrastructure to attract clients. The company will construct speculative sites as well as offer a build-to-suit option. From the Partners: Mobile County Commission President Merceria Ludgood said, “This project addresses a growing sector in our industry mix. Its potential to attract logistics jobs can be a game changer for Mobile County.” City of Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said, “In order to fully capitalize on the growth from the Port and the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, we must have sites ready for large companies to locate with utilities and infrastructure already in place. Today’s announcement is three years in the making and a huge step forward to propel our growing distribution hub. We are grateful for our partners in this project, especially Burton Property Group for their investment in Mobile and the success of our entire region.” Alabama State Port Authority Director and CEO John Driscoll said, “The new park offers up new land options for light manufacturing and distribution investments that rely on modern, deep-water seaport terminals for their import/export activities. We’re excited by this public/private initiative that will only strengthen the region’s growth opportunities.” Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Economic Development David Rodgers said, “This is a huge step in continuing our success in economic development. Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, Mayor Sandy Stimpson, and City Council President Levon Manzie have announced plans to construct a new, permanent facility, tentatively called the “Africatown Heritage House,” that will house the exhibition. The Africatown Heritage House will be located on property owned by the City of Mobile, adjacent to the Robert Hope Community Center and Mobile County Training School. The facility, jointly funded by Mobile County Commission and the City of Mobile, is expected to be a 5,000 square foot building. The facility will be a permanent fixture in the Africatown community, and, in years and decades to come, will be functional for a variety of purposes. The facility is expected to be complete in late summer 2020. In addition to telling the story of the last slave ship, Clotilda: The Exhibition will include over a dozen Clotilda artifacts, recovered from the shipwreck in the Mobile River and on loan from the Alabama Historical Commission, the State Historic Preservation Office. Drawing on the archaeological reports released by the Alabama Historical Commission, Clotilda: The Exhibition tells the stories of the Clotilda and Africatown in the context of slavery and maritime shipping along the Gulf Coast.

The whole north section of the property is cornered with Halls Mill Creek. Just to give you an idea of where it is located at, it is between Cottage Hill Road and Three Notch-Kroner Road. The middle hole is the middle of the property. This is a survey of the north end of the property. Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) has the very top section and half mile of the property. They are supplying utilities. There is some sort of conduit that dips down into where the creek is at. I do not know what that is to. I have not read the information on it yet. This is the information I have obtained from the County. It is a flood way. If you notice how it widens out as soon as it crosses the street there, it is because the construction material that has gotten away from construction sites in the past have made its way to this creek.

Clotilda: The Exhibition includes the histories of the final journey of the Clotilda, the settlement and history of Africatown, and the discovery of the sunken schooner, all through a combination of interpretive text panels, documents, and artifacts. AHC will contribute more than a dozen artifacts from the Clotilda to the exhibit. The exhibit will be housed in a forthcoming facility - the “Africatown Heritage House” - that will be adjacent to the Robert Hope Community Center in the heart of Africatown. The building project was spearheaded by Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, the City of Mobile, and City of Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson and construction will begin immediately. Work on the facility is expected to be completed by late summer 2020, with the exhibit tentatively opening in October 2020. After 1808, Federal Law prohibited the importation of Africans to the United States. In 1860, co-conspirators Timothy Meaher and Captain William Foster made a bet that they could smuggle enslaved Africans into the United States, despite the law. They journeyed to an area of Africa, now known as Benin, and forcibly migrated 110 enslaved Africans to Mobile on the Clotilda, the last-known slave ship to enter the United States.
