Forward Blending the New with the Old

Although students were not here to see it, during the summer months of 1997 the Flagler Room received a face-lift. Workers stabilized its ceiling and gave it a new paint job. The floors of some of Ponce's first floor rooms were redone, and new carpet ing was installed in many of the hallways and stairways. The biggest change students noticed on moving-in day was that Ponce Lobby East had been converted into a female residence hall. Ponce Hall was not the only place that underwent changes. The communication building was converted from the old bookstore into a classroom, offices and WFCF music library. The student lounge received a pool table and an air hockey table. Molly's added a grill and coffee bar to give students a bigger selection. The library installed an ID card-operated security system at its front doors, allowing access to only Flagler students, faculty and staff during evenings and weekends.

Access: Flagler is not only a futuristic theme, it is a state of mind. In 1968, when the first Flagler College students walked through the doors of the Hotel Ponce de Leon, they never dreamed of such a technologically advanced time, unless they watched the Jetsons. Flagler instituted many changes over the years in order to improve itself. In 1971, the first legal y-chromosomes joined the ranks of the student body. Kenan Hall first opened its doors for classes in 1982. The library, originally located in the solarium of Ponce, moved four times in all. In 1996, the new library opened its doors on campus, and new "doors" to the world with access to the internet.

This year due to demands by students and staff, Flagler upgraded its computer labs' software 1997. Some faculty members started requiring students to submit assign ments via e-mail or the internet. Through "the web," students are no longer secluded in St. Augustine. The entire world is available to them with a click of the mouse button. Students can talk to other students in Japan, research a paper through Infoseek and find a lost friend. Students can send a virtual postcard just to say hi to a pen pal, or even send a "virtual meal" to a fellow student.

N EY TRIP

It was a hot and humid day on September 2, 1997, when the Class of 2001 went to Disney World. It sure was a "small world after all" with 27 states and several countries represented on this trip. Disney is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Cinderella's castle is just a memory now, with its cake-like appearance. It will return to its normal look once the celebration is over on January 31, 1998. All the freshmen wore matching shirts (compliments of the SGA) that said "Class of 2001" on the front and "An Education Odyssey at Flagler College" on the back.

With enrollment rising to record levels it only seems appropriate to write about the reasons so many students choose to attend Flagler. Size of such a private school means friends can be found just around every corner. Small class sizes allow profes sors to have more personal involvement with their students. Academics take on an easier tone when professors are more accessible. Colloquia, forums, guest speakers and creative writing workshops all serve to enhance the students' educa tional experience.

Flagler College replaced fall semester orientation with a class. "The Fresh man Experience" helped ease fresh men through the sometimes difficult transition between high school and college. Freshmen learned about the college rules, time and money man agement, using the library, self-esteem and personal goal setting. The fresh men were split into three groups with Mike Roberson, Linda Rowe and Nicole Donnelly each in charge of one.

75 ^v Forward This year's first colloquium was held Wednesday Oct. 1, in the Proctor Library. Two students and Dr. Santas read and discussed the papers they had written. Sarah Schade's paper was "I Should Have Raised Canaries—The Relationship Between Mothers and Children in Sula," (by Tony Morrison). This was about not enough love between two families of mothers and daughters. Erin Kelly's paper was "Lear's Fool as Friend, Teacher, and Shadow." It discussed the significance of King Lear's court jester in the Shakespeare play. Dr.Santas' presented "Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility. The Unglorification of Satire; vs. Jane Austen's Parallel Vision." His paper compared the book by Jane Austen and the screenplay by Emma Thompson. On Nov. 19 the Fall Forum presented award winning journalist and syndicated columnist Georgie Ann Geyer. She spoke on "Death of Citizenship." Geyer also fielded questions about working as a foreign correspondent and being imprisoned in Angola as an "Israeli spy." Geyer has interviewed such historical figures as Yassar Arafat, Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein and half a dozen U.S. presidents. She also speaks several languages including Spanish, German, Portuguese and Russian. Spring semester saw the beginning of the Flagler Forum on Government and Public Policy which brought such well-known speakers to campus as San Francisco Examiner Washington Bureau Chief Christopher Matthews, Peace Corps Director Mark Gearan, Polish Embassy Minister Counselor Boguslaw Majewski, National Press Foundation President Robert Meyers and Washington Post reporter David Broder.

r If anything characterizes campus life at Flagler, it's the student organizations. Some of the groups have designed their own web pages such as DAC, Spirit and the Gargoyle. Many of them are official clubs, with charters, officers, members and annual events; they raise funds for charity and perform much- needed and appreciated community service. Other student organizations are not clubs but give students the chance to work together to produce literary chronicles, radio shows, bi weekly television programs or a series of choral events.
