Workers stabilized its ceiling and gave it a new paint job. The floors of some of Ponce's first floor rooms were redone, and new carpet ing was installed in many of the hallways and stairways. The biggest change students noticed on moving-in day was that Ponce Lobby East had been converted into a female residence hall. Ponce Hall was not the only place that underwent changes. The communication building was converted from the old bookstore into a classroom, offices and WFCF music library. The student lounge received a pool table and an air hockey table. Molly's added a grill and coffee bar to give students a bigger selection. The library installed an ID card-operated security system at its front doors, allowing access to only Flagler students, faculty and staff during evenings and weekends. In 1968, when the first Flagler College students walked through the doors of the Hotel Ponce de Leon, they never dreamed of such a technologically advanced time, unless they watched the Jetsons. Flagler instituted many changes over the years in order to improve itself. In 1971, the first legal y-chromosomes joined the ranks of the student body. Kenan Hall first opened its doors for classes in 1982. The library, originally located in the solarium of Ponce, moved four times in all. In 1996, the new library opened its doors on campus, and new "doors" to the world with access to the internet. This year due to demands by students and staff, Flagler upgraded its computer labs' software 1997. Some faculty members started requiring students to submit assign ments via e-mail or the internet. Through "the web," students are no longer secluded in St. Augustine. The entire world is available to them with a click of the mouse button. Students can talk to other students in Japan, research a paper through Infoseek and find a lost friend. Students can send a virtual postcard just to say hi to a pen pal, or even send a "virtual meal" to a fellow student. N EY TRIP It was a hot and humid day on September 2, 1997, when the Class of 2001 went to Disney World. It sure was a "small world after all" with 27 states and several countries represented on this trip. Disney is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Cinderella's castle is just a memory now, with its cake-like appearance. It will return to its normal look once the celebration is over on January 31, 1998. All the freshmen wore matching shirts (compliments of the SGA) that said "Class of 2001" on the front and "An Education Odyssey at Flagler College" on the back. I 15 • Forward EUR Club night in the fall semester was held Sept. 9. The evening exposed all students to Flagler's wide variety of clubs and organizations. Every existing club at the time attended to recruit new members into their organizations. After club night, two groups petitioned to become new clubs: Ultimate Frisbee I and ORCA, an environmental awareness club. They applied for and received club status. Also, SADD regained its club status after disbanding last year.
