• 19Th August 2018 a Few Minutes with the Dictators' Andy Shernoff
19th August 2018A few minutes with the Dictators' Andy Shernoff [https://3.bp.blogspot.com/- ktsfimQWqvQ/W3oRTeLFQ4I/AAAAAAAABKU/2VDa1FeSHRg_z3qutb5Gw-AIZpfVW- 61gCEwYBhgL/s1600/AS1.jpeg] Photo by Hanna Toresson Andy Shernoff isn’t often lumped in with the Beatles, or the Rolling Stones, or even the Sex Pistols. But with a legacy like his, he doesn’t have to be. Chances are, if you were ever interested enough to check out Garagerocktopia in the first place, we likely need not explain who he is or his place in Rock and Roll. But just in case you need a little clarification, he started a band in New York back in the early ‘70s called the Dictators. That band may never have sold as many albums as they or their record company might have liked, but the sound they cranked out has yet to stop resonating. Shernoff was the singer, bass player and perhaps most importantly, the songwriter for the Dictators. At the time, the phrase “punk rock” had not yet been growled. The music that would earn that name, though, was being birthed, and few bands were more responsible for what eventually popped out than were the Dictators “It’s not like we’re part of the public discourse or anything, but we did play a transitional role in the history of rock,” said Shernoff, who talked to Garagerocktopia by telephone from his upstate New York home and by e-mail. “The first Dictators album was released in 1975 a year before the Ramones and two years before the Sex Pistols. Joey Ramone was wearing glitter when he used to see us wearing leather jackets at The Coventry in Queens.” Other members of the band included lead guitarist Ross “the Boss” Friedman; rhythm guitarist Scott Kempner; drummer Stu Boy King and singer Richard Blum, better known as Handsome Dick Manitoba.

What an Electrifying Past: 1925 St. Marks Place In 1831, four buildings were built as townhouses for the wealthy at 19 25 St. Marks Place. Reflecting the changing demographics of the neighborhood in 1870, the buildings at 19 and 21 St. Marks Place were acquired by the Arion Society. The Arion Society was one of the lead ing German singing social organizations in the US from 1854 to 1918 and emerged in the East Village as it developed into Kleindeustch land, or Little Germany. When the Arion Society moved uptown in 1887, all three buildings were purchased by George Erhet and combined into community halls and ballrooms as Arlington Hall. Arlington Hall hosted everyone from Theodore Roosevelt, when he was a NYC Police Commissioner, to William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper publisher who built the nation’s largest newspaper chain. One of its most infamous incidents, however, occurred on January 6, 1914 when there was a mob shootout between Jewish mobsters led by Benjamin “Dope Benny” Fein and Italian gangster Jack Sirocco’s crew. This event took place in Arlington Hall and marked the beginning of the predom inance of the Italian American gangsters over the Jewish American gangsters. In 1920 the buildings were acquired by the Polish National Home a community meeting hall and restaurant. THE ELECTRIC CIRCUS By the 1960s, the bohemianism and nightlife previ ously associated with New York's Greenwich Village was growing in what would later be called the East Village. In 1966 artist Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey – who directed many of Warhol's films, and who became a sometime manager of the Velvet Underground – sublet the ballroom and turned it into a nightclub.

  • Alt-Nation: Shows to Put a Spring in Your Step,Alt-Nation: Pixels’
Alt-Nation: WBRU Rock Hunt It’s that time again — the finals of this year’s WBRU Rock Hunt take over The Met Café this Saturday night. The great thing about the WBRU Rock Hunt is every year is completely different. Sure, there are some years where there is an obvious favorite, but this year it’s wide open! Last year’s champs, Public Alley, came from out of nowhere to stun favorites Most Dangerous Men Alive and Forest Fires for the victory. This only goes to show that one can crunch the numbers and factor in a band’s draw all day, but come show time there is no sure bet when it comes to picking the WBRU Rock Hunt Champion. In the old days when the event was at the now defect Giza in Olneyville, one could make prop bets on the street with the guy trying to sell you the hub caps he stole off the guy parked in front of you. These days finding trouble isn’t so easy, but where there is money to made, all things are possible. Things to consider when placing a bet is sometimes bands will do ill-advised things to take them out of the running. Some examples in recent years include Baylock thinking the world really wanted to hear them do a mid-set stripped down triple bongo number or even last year when Most Dangerous Men Alive performed a Rage Against the Machine cover that was void of all the energy and passion of the original. The best thing for a band competing in the Rock Hunt is to recognize what they are good at it and stick to that.
