School Sports Newsletter Summer 2015

Have an enjoyable Summer Holiday

WOW! What a fantastic year we have had in CRGS Sport. Our students have outclassed, outshone and outplayed many opponents locally, regionally and nationally. We have excelled in many sports and have won more silverware in a wider range of activities than ever before. The trophy cabinet is bursting at the seams. Not only have we been successful with winning, we have also had our highest number of extra-curricular participants to date. Our Sports Leaders have been exceptional and to top it all off, two of our students have gone on to represent the Ribble Valley for writing a CRGS ‘Pledge for Sports’.

The commitment of the students has been second to none; they have shown real effort and motivation to achieve and should be congratulated for this. CRGS Sport has never been better!

The summer season has not failed to follow the successes of the winter season with Girls and Boys Cricket reaching new heights with regional representation. Athletics, Rounders and Tennis have all been amazing to watch as the students have surpassed all expectations.

Sports Personality Awards 2015 The annual Sports Personality Awards evening was held for the first time in its rightful place, our new Sports hall. The evening was another fantastic success, celebrating how fantastic our students are. Our ‘Most Improved’ awards show how dedicated students are and how they are always striving to be the best they can be. The Physical Education Department could not be more proud of the dedication, commitment and energy that all CRGS students put into their school sporting careers. The evening also showed how supportive our students’ parents were with their generosity in buying raffle tickets and participating in the auction. We would like to thank all those who kindly donated the prizes. Over 300 students and parents attended the awards evening and joined us in the celebrations. A massive well done to those who were nominated, those who received their colours and congratulations to the eventual winners. The rundown of winners can be found below:

She has also refereed at Primary School Football events. Emily has worked hard on and off the pitch and is highly regarded in CRGS Sport.

Sports Pledge

A new competition in the Ribble Valley was held and students had to write a pledge addressing some of the key areas within sport. Three of our Year 7 classes created pledges and the best one was selected to enter the competition. This was written by Esha Adeel and Radikha Kaimal. They were successful with their entry in the regional round and have now been selected to represent the Ribble Valley in the competition. Very well done!

Leadership at CRGS Our leaders have made us proud once again. They have helped out at numerous Primary School competitions and the feedback from the organisers has been marvellous. The Schools Games Organiser, Jane Johnson, stated after the Primary School Sports Hall Athletics event that ‘They really did go above and beyond all expectations. It is a long day and hard to keep high levels of motivation and energy especially throughout the second event but they remained positive until the end. They were a total credit to the school. The students really excelled in trying to draw the best performances out of the athletes, giving them tips to improve and get the best scores possible. I received many comments from other school staff and other School Games Organisers about where the leaders were from and how good they were’. Well done to everyone involved!

Boys’ Football It has been a mixed season with all teams being promoted to the Premier Leagues where they played some tough matches against local rivals. The Year 7s and 8s can be very proud of themselves as they finished 2nd in the league. The Year 10 boys’ team reached the Semi- Finals of the English Small Schools Cup. The Year 7 team again set the standard by reaching the last 16 of the whole of England! The U18s teams both had remarkable seasons. The Second XI were unbeaten in the league and the First XI won the league and Lancashire Cup. These were the most talented teams we have had for a while (and that is saying something!). With many currently in Year 12 we look forward to another exciting season in the next academic year.

Girls’ Football What a fantastic debut season our Year 7 girls have had. They have introduced themselves with a bang. They have remained unbeaten in the and Ribble Valley Leagues and Tournaments and have also produced some fine victories in the Lancashire schools competition. They were victorious over teams like Montgomery, Haslingden and Ripley St Thomas and on the finals day played some awesome football to bring home the trophy and be crowned Lancashire champions. The U13 Girls team have been crowned HRVS Champions having only lost one league game throughout the season. The U15 girls have had a good season and were placed

2nd in the final standings of the HRVS league, winning 5 Y7&8 Y9&10 out of 8 of the matches, the most notable against St Ribblesdale Won 8-1 Lost 2-3 Christopher’s. A number of our girls have been put Bowland Won 1-0 Won 3-1 forward for trials for the Lancashire squad. The girls St Augustine’s Draw 2-2 Lost 2-3 attended their first trials and said they really enjoyed it and Norden Won 11-0 Won 1-0 felt positive leading into the second trial in September. We Mt Carmel Won 4-0 Lost 6-1 will report in the Christmas edition whether they have Accrington Ac. Won 1-0 Won 1-0 been successful or not and we wish them good luck. St Christopher’s Won 7-2 Won 8-3 Rhyddings Won 10-0 Won 2-1 Lancashire School Games Super 8 Athletics, Girls Cricket & Handball After becoming District champions, having beaten St Augustine’s, Ribblesdale and others, 16 Year 7 boys and girls travelled to Blackpool for the Lancashire SPAR School Games to take on the best county schools. 20 events ran throughout a very demanding day, including a new event in Hurdles which the CRGS students have never experienced before. Representing Ribble Valley, the CRGS students gave their all and supported each other as every member of the team had to perform in two events plus a relay race. Of the 20 races over the course of the event, CRGS boys and girls managed to finish 1st or 2nd in 18 of them. This meant that we became Lancashire Champions! The future is bright for the CRGS athletics team as the Year 7 squad have shown throughout the year. The U14s Handball team did really well in hot conditions and finished the event in 4th position The U13 Girls Cricket team had already won their District championship and went into the event full of confidence. Unbeaten throughout the group stages and knock out games, they made it to the final. Unfortunately it was a case of déjà- vu as the girls lost in the final by three runs! Thanks largely to Team CRGS, the Ribble Valley won the event overall. Well done to everyone who competed at any stage! House Sports Competitions

Throughout the year there have been numerous sports House competitions. There has always been an excellent turnout by performers and spectators alike. This term was no exception with the House Rounders and House Badminton competitions. The Rounders competition was hotly contested and extremely close in some year groups. There were some excellent displays of fielding skills and big hitters. The Badminton competition was new to this year’s schedule and allowed some of our ‘individuals’ to shine. The competition was made up of both Singles and Doubles and the students displayed some excellent skills and tactics. Well done to all those who took part. Super 8 Athletics

The Year 7 boys and girls Super 8 Athletics squad sailed through the regional rounds with some exciting performances. The teams were just too hot to handle and exceptional performances came from Eleanor Jorgensen, Emma West, Louis Salter and Harry Ellis. The teams both became District Champions and went on to represent Ribble Valley at the Lancashire School Games. To find out how they went on, please read the Lancashire School Games article. Athletics The District Athletics competition was held on the hottest day of the year so far. Extra training sessions and some extremely talented individuals enabled us to become District Champions in both the Boys’ Track and Field events. Our athletes qualified for all but two of the track finals and the results were strong for numerous field events. YEAR 7 BOYS JOSHUA BAILEY – SHOT PUT

JOSHUA BAILEY – DISCUS Many of our students took home a medal this year but JOSH LOAN CLARKE – LONG JUMP never in our history have JAMIE TEARE – TRIPLE JUMP the Year 7 team won so JAMIE TEARE – 400M many gold medals! It wasn't HARRY WOOD – 800M just the Year 7s though; other team members showed the District just how good they were. There were so many personal LOUIS SALTER – 200M bests and personal victories; Josh Loan-Clarke leapt to a huge 4 X 100M RELAY TEAM 4.44m in the Long Jump, while Maya Nelson threw the Javelin YEAR 7 GIRLS almost 20m. Eleanor Jorgensen putted the Shot over 8m,Tom ELEANOR JORGENSEN – SHOT PUT Doherty reached 11.81m in the Triple Jump and Niamh Kay threw the Discus over 20m. ELEANOR JORGENSEN – DISCUS MAYA NELSEN - JAVELIN

Not only did we have our best ever performances in the Field YEAR 8 BOYS events, the Track events weren’t too far behind either. The HARVEY GRIFFIN – 1500M Year 7 and Year 10 4x100m Relay teams took gold; Harry YEAR 9 BOYS Wood won the 800m; and Louis Salter recorded a 1st and 2nd TOM DOHERTY – TRIPLE JUMP in the 200m and 100m respectively. Jamie Teare won the 400m gold, while Adam Bolton and Harvey Griffin both won YEAR 9 GIRLS gold for their age groups in the 1500m. The CRGS Athletics HANNAH PROCTER – SHOT PUT teams always do themselves and the school proud but this YEAR 10 BOYS year they were extra special; temperatures were rising above ADAM BOLTON – 1500M 30 degrees and the athletes kept on giving the performances of their lives. An outstanding achievement from outstanding 4 X 100M RELAY TEAM students. YEAR 10 GIRLS NIAMH KAY – DISCUS NIAMH KAY – TRIPLE JUMP Netball

As with the girls’ football team, the Year 7s announced their arrival into the Secondary School Netball scene by beating everyone they have come up against. They are definitely a force to be reckoned with. The Year 8s, 9s and 10s also had very good seasons, topping the table in the play-offs and moving into the Premiership. The Netball season was rounded off with some excellent victories in the HRVS Tournaments with both the Year 7 and the Year 10 teams winning the trophy. Another fantastic season - well done to all of those involved.

Boys’ Cricket

The U15s boys’ team played some magnificent cricket and were unbeaten in their league games. They have made it to the District Final. They also reached the final of the Lancashire competition. Despite playing well they lost to a very well-resourced Manchester Grammar School. The U13s team were unbeaten in the District league and into the final. They also reached the quarter final of the Lancashire Plate. There have been several outstanding players in the boys’ teams; too many to mention but Charlie Dewhurst hitting the ball out of the ground at Enfield will live long in the memory for those fortunate enough to have been there! Both finals will be played in September and we will update you on the results in the Christmas edition of the newsletter. Girls’ Cricket The season started back in February with the annual Lady Taverner’s indoor competition. There was an additional round this season, so CRGS would meet all their local rivals in the very first round! Training started in the Sports Hall straight after Christmas and the girls were lucky enough to have many of their sessions led by Year 11 GCSE cricket students. This prepared the teams well to face faster bowlers and to think tactically. Both the U13 and U15 teams had clearly been well prepared, winning the local competitions with ease. The next round came in March when the U13 and U15 teams travelled to Salt Ayre and Blackburn College respectively for the County Finals. Here CRGS would meet teams from all over Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester. The U13s day came first, where CRGS were drawn in a tough group, but played some exceptional cricket and were easily through to the final. The less experienced cricketers amongst the team had picked up some useful tactics throughout the day and were ready to meet Ormskirk in the final. The girls were nervous, as Ormskirk are traditionally a fantastic team, but the captain Anjalie Singh stayed positive and in the end led the girls to victory! This was a fabulous win and the first time that CRGS would reach the regional finals at the U13 age group. The U15 team had to follow this amazing performance the following week. Despite playing some fantastic Cricket again, and reaching the final, they were beaten in the end, leaving the U15 girls indoor county finalists in 2015. The Regional round for the U13 team came at the end of April when we travelled to Old Trafford for the day and had the opportunity to play in the fabulous indoor facilities there. Here CRGS would represent Lancashire and meet champion teams from Cumbria, Durham, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Northumberland. Again the team had a really tough group and played in some really tight matches. Anjalie Singh and Cara Milne-Readhead gave outstanding performances, but with more experience, Aqsa Jalgaonkar, Sarah Carr, Jenny Pilkington and Eleanor Jorgensen were also able to score some really important runs for the team and took some excellent wickets. Katy Taylor also emerged as an exceptional wicket keeper. After winning all of their group games the girls could not have been more delighted to be the first CRGS team to reach the Regional final! We chose to bat first and gave the opposition over 70 runs to chase. Fielding was tight over the first few overs and CRGS took some important early wickets, but the champion team from Northumberland had strength in depth and all of their batters were more than capable of recording sixes. Entering the final, Northumberland needed 12 runs and were facing Anjelie, our strongest bowler. It looked as though CRGS may be victorious and be travelling to Lords for the National Finals! With one ball left the opposition required five to win. After an unfortunate fielding mix up both teams finished on equal runs and the match came down to wickets. CRGS unfortunately lost the tie by just 1 wicket! The team were devastated, but equally proud to have given the opposition such a good match and to have progressed further in this competition than any previous CRGS team! Next came the outdoor season. With all of the winter practice, the girls were more than ready. Again the U15 and U13 teams both progressed through the district competitions and into the county finals. This time the U15 team would play first in a round robin competition at Heywood Cricket Club. Missing some of their more experienced cricketers the team did an amazing job, all bowling, fielding and batting well. They met some fantastic teams and were really happy to finish in 2nd place on the day. Next the U13 team had their finals at Urmston Cricket Club. They progressed through the group stages to meet Heywood in the final. Again it was a nail-biting finish and Heywood required three runs off the final two balls. A lack of experience and a weakness in tactical understanding meant that we made a fielding error and gave Heywood the runs they needed. Again the girls were devastated at the time, but are now exceptionally proud to have made the county finals. The last competition of the season for the girls was the Kwick Cricket School Games competition. The U13 team played first in the local round robin competition at Cricket Club, won all of their games and progressed through to the Schools Games County Finals at Blackpool to represent Ribble Valley. The U15 team played at Ribblesdale Cricket Club where they swept aside the opposition in the group stages, convincingly beating St Augustine’s and Mount Carmel. The team Sports Day Our annual Sports Day was once again a fantastic success. Competitors, staff and spectators alike all enjoyed the morning events and the traditional afternoon events immensely. Records were smashed and personal bests made. All of those who represented their houses should be very proud of themselves. Our Sports days have had a revival since the London Olympics as every Key Stage 3 student gets involved, whether it is in the morning or afternoon events. For each event competitors can win points for their house. The morning events were inclusive Sportshall Athletics style, allowing all abilities to contribute to the House competition.

The afternoon was more a traditional athletics meet and each event was hotly contested. As ever the athletes showed grit and determination. Each year group is awarded the Victor and Victrix Ludorum (the individual athlete who has scored the most points). The winners were: Year 7 - Hazel Jenkins and Jamie Teare, Year 8 - Aleeza Sulaman and Merril Tsang, Year 9 - Aaron Nicolaus and Roxy Foley-Jennison & Hannah Procter. Finally, in Year 10, Charlie Dewhurst and Niamh Kay took home the trophies. The records that were broken this year included Harvey Griffin smashing 17 seconds off the Year 8 Boys 1500m and almost 8 seconds off the 800m - an outstanding performance. Other records that fell were Eleanor Jorgensen in Year 7 who threw the shot 8m30, a whopping metre over the record that had been held since 2002. Hannah Procter also beat the Shot record. Boys and girls triple jump records were beaten by Jamie Teare and Kate Watson in Year 7 and Anjalie Singh in Year 8. The Year 9 boys long jump record was broken by Max Livesy. On the track Josh Bailey, Charlie Dewhurst, Jack Stanley and Year 9 boys relay teams all set the standard for the future. As the points from both events count it was difficult to see any house in the lead, but the overall winners on the day with a fantastic result were Galileo. Well done to everyone who took part to make the day so memorable. Basketball Basketball teams at CRGS are always strong, however there was no silverware for the boys this year, with the U16s coming close by finishing runners up in the Lancashire Final.

A special mention should be made for Sam Sherratt in Year 10 who has been scouted to play for Manchester Magic!

The Year 7 mixed team were unbeaten all year up until their Lancashire final which they narrowly lost. This bodes well for the future.

Girls’ Basketball In the Christmas Newsletter we reported on the excellent achievements of the girls U14, U16 and U19 Basketball teams in their Lancashire Schools League fixtures. All of the teams played well enough to reach the semi-finals/finals again this year! The U14 team met a very strong team from St Wilfrid’s High School and narrowly missed out on a place in the final, which St Wilfrid’s went on to win. The U16 team played against Penwortham Girls in the semi-finals and followed in the footsteps of the U14s, narrowly missing out on a place in the final. The U19 team met St Wilfrid’s in the semi-finals and managed a victory! They met the very ex- perienced and professional team from Blackpool in the final, played some superb basketball (along with some Netball!) and won 39-28. CRGS are again Lancashire U19 Girls Basketball champions! 2015 will see many members of the team leave, who have been Lancashire Cham- pions throughout their time at CRGS and have made us exceptionally proud! Triathlon

This year CRGS was invited to compete in a schools Triathlon at School. Over 60 students signed up for the event and committed to training each week until the day of competition. Each Friday the Triathletes joined the school’s Running Club and went off site for fitness training and would run a couple of miles around the Salt Hill Quarry circuit. The students were put through their paces by two swimming coaches at Ribblesdale Pool where they looked at stroke technique, breathing and transition. The final part of the training involved a trip out to the Steven Burke Sports Hub in Pendle where two coaches from the Manchester Velodrome taught our students how to use their bikes effectively including changing gears, cornering and sprint starts. The day was very wet but very enjoyable and informative and helped the triathletes to prepare for the big event. The day of the event was soon upon us and the athletes were registered and briefed on the event details. Then they were off on the 70m swim around the pool, followed by a short run to the first transition. The students picked up their helmets and bikes and rode off twice around the bike course. The final transition was onto the run and a sprint for home. The students completed the course in super quick time to collect their medals. A fantastic achievement for our Triathletes!

Handball The annual Handball competition was held early in May and our Year 9 boys were confident they could do well. All the boys were relative newcomers to the sport and certainly hadn't competed at an inter-school level before. They went along to the HRVS competition with high hopes and a spring in their step. It didn't take long for the boys to find their feet and they took charge in the first match. They continued with their winning form to become eventual champions. They went on to represent the district at the School Games in June at Stan- ley Park, Blackpool. To see how they got on read the Lancashire School Games article.

Rounders The Rounders season has been excellent this year. We have had some fantastic results. The Tournaments have proved to be tough but we have risen to the challenge. The Year 7 girls’ tournament held at St Augustine’s in June was a great learning curve for the girls as they swept aside the opposition of St Christopher’s, Bowland and Norden in the group stages to progress to the final. It was extremely tense and so close that it came down to the last ball of the game where we lost out by a mere half a rounder. It was so close it really could have gone either way! All would agree though that this was a great start to their Rounders careers at CRGS. The Year 8s have also won all of their league matches and were victorious in the tournament for the second year in a row. Excellent performances came from Abbi Frankland, Kalantha Hirst and Aqsa Jalgaonkar. The Year 9 and 10 teams have also had a very good season. All four of our teams have won their respective league and will go on to play the finals in September to decide the final standings. Good luck girls. Sports Tours at CRGS

As with previous years there have been sports tours taking place again and many students have enjoyed a range of activities on various tours. This year the Water Sports tour has enjoyed the Ardeche with brilliant weather, the Isle of Man tour saw our Year 7s go on their very first sports tour and in October half-term we will see our students jet off to New York for the very first football tour in the USA. Water Sports 2015

Over May half-term, we travelled to south France for a week for the Watersports holiday. Students have said it was an excellent school trip as it offered so new many experiences. The first half of the holiday was spent completing a three day canoe descent on the Ardeche. The views were incredible and, although tiring, the canoeing was fun. We also got the opportunity to visit three French towns and buy souvenirs for our friends and family. The second half of the holiday was in Mimosa, a small commune in south eastern France with beautiful Mediterranean weather. Here we enjoyed beach activities and water sports. Some of the favourite activities we participated in were banana boats, Pico sailing, windsurfing and catamaran sailing.

Year 7 Football & Netball Tour Isle of Man 2015

The Isle of Man Tour this year was as cold and blustery as ever, but this not deter the teams from playing their best games ever. Fixtures against Castle Rushen High School and King Williams’ College once again looked set to be tough, but with some slick play and fantastic team work our Football teams came away unbeaten from both of their matches. The football teams maintained CRGS’s magnificent unbeaten run on the Isle of Man tour.

Our netballers faced difficult defending and sharp shooting from both teams but they battled hard to overcome the opposition and came away with 3 out of 4 wins, a remarkable achievement with many players improving with each minute of the games. Well done to all involved and a special well done to Archie Aspinwall and Maya Nelson for outstanding performances.
