Great Doddington Parish Council Great VILLAGE NEWS Edition 38 December 2018 WW1 Centenary Commemorations 1918-2018 There have been a number of events in the village to mark the centenary year of the ending of WW1 and you can read details in the updates from those who have so kindly organised them. The County also commemorated those who laid down their lives in order for us to live in peace and freedom, including silhoue>es of soldiers that have appeared in some of our towns and villages and gorgeous displays of poppies, as well as the many services of remembrance in our churches and places of worship. In addi@on, this has been the fourth year that cyclists from Great Doddington have embarked on a Ride4Hope challenge, to cycle the 270 miles from Ypres in Belgium to Northampton. It was in fact the last year for this par@cular route and so we adopted the strapline, “the troops are coming home” in honour of this and the centenary. Our mission was to raise as much money as possible for the Northampton Hope Centre as well as to mark the sacrifice of our troops. The evening before our departure, we aended a formal recep@on given by the Mayor of Ypres, who movingly told us about the town’s mission to commemorate the fallen in the First World War, as well as to reinforce the values of peace and comradeship amongst peoples and na@ons. We then a>ended the Last Post Ceremony, which takes place in the town every evening at the Menin Gate. Winston Churchill said of this site, “a more sacred place for the Bri@sh does not exist in the world.” If you would like to see the 100th Anniversary commemora@ons with the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge at the Menin Gate this link will take you to it h>ps://youtu.be/lWIhawmIlng. 2 As the sounds of the last post filled the stone arches engraved with the names of some of the 90,000 missing Bri@sh and Commonwealth soldiers, it was sobering to know that the military casual@es from the Bri@sh and Commonwealth, Belgian, French and German Armies during the ba>les of the Ypres Salient were some four hundred thousand dead and many more wounded. Passchendaele, the Ypres balefield, is etched forever in our consciousness for the brutality and hardship which men endured in ferocious figh@ng over a few hundred feet of ground. It was victory for the Allies but at an enormous cost. It was therefore a great honour to be able to pay our respects at this ceremony and also to visit the Tyne Cot Cemetary at the start our ride, laying wreaths from the town of Northampton as the words of the poet Laurence Binyon rang out; “Tey shal grow not old, as we tat are left grow old: Age shal not weary tem, nor te years condemn. At te going down of te sun and in te morning We wil remember tem.” 3 Village Pensioners’ Christmas Lunch Saturday 5th January 2019 Memorial Hall, Great Doddington 12.30pm Cost £5.00 If you are over 60, live in the village and would like to go Please ring either Sam on 770955 or Jodie on 270831 Or e-mail [email protected] 4 Repairs to:- RWD • Televisions Repair Services • Video recorders Repairs for all your Domestic Appliances • Hard Drive Recorders • DVDs Call Robin • Audio Equipment 07971 910504 • Washing Machines • Tumble Dryers or • Dishwashers 01933 380971 • Electric Cookers email: [email protected] • Vacuum Cleaners • Collection & Delivery Available One call for all your domestic appliance repairs • Prompt Reliable Service 5 CONTENTS WW1 CENTENARY COMMEMORATIONS……………………………..………………………….2 PARISH, BOROUGH AND COUNTY COUNCILLORS……………………………………..……..7 COUNCIL MEETINGS AND NOTE FROM THE EDITOR………….…………………………….8 NEWS FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN…………………….……………………….10 WELLINGBOROUGH COUNCIL MATTERS …………………………………………..…………..12 COUNTY COUNCILLOR NEWS………………………………..……………………………………….16 FARMERS MARKETS/WASTE COLLECTION CALENDAR…………..………………..…..….17 ORGANISATIONS GREAT DODDINGTON VILLAGE PRE-SCHOOL………….……………………..…….…..….…22 GREAT DODDINGTON HERITAGE GROUP……………………….……….………………..….…24 ST NICHOLAS CHURCH ………………………………………………………..…….…..…….….……26 SUMMER LEYS WILDLIFE WATCH GROUP………………………..…………………….……….32 GREAT DODDINGTON FOOD PRODUCTION SOCIETY (ALLOTMENTS)………………33 GREAT DODDINGTON GARDENING TEAM………………………………………..………….…34 GREAT DODDINGTON PRIMARY SCHOOL…………….………………..…….………….….….35 GREAT DODDINGTON MEMORIAL HALL……………………………..………….………..…….36 GREAT DODDINGTON CHAPEL……..………………….………………..…….………………….…37 FOGDS/DODDINGTON DUCKLINGS/GOLDEN YEARS…..……….….………………………38 FRIENDS OF GREAT DODDINGTON PARK…….…………………………..……………….……..39 GREAT DODDINGTON EVENING WI/OVER 50S BOWLS…………………….………….….40 GREAT DODDINGTON POORS LAND CHARITY…………………………………………….……41 SPORT IN THE VILLAGE FOOTBALL CLUB…………..…………………………………………….……………………….……….…42 YOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB/LADIES ARCHERY………….……….…………………………….……43 CRICKET CLUB………………………………………………………………….………….………….………44 ADVERTISERS THE VILLAGE STORES/RWD REPAIRs…………………………..………….….……………..……..…5 AR KNIGHT CAR BODY REPAIR …….…….…………..…………………………………………………..9 THE STAGS HEAD/THE OLD WATERMILL………………….……………..……………………….…18 INVITE TO PARADISE SPECIALIST TRAVEL CONSULTANTS………………………..………….19 IRCHESTER CATTERY/ ROB SIMONS DECORATING SERVICES…………………….…..……20 HIGGINS BUILDING SUPPLIES………………….………………………….………….……..………..…21 GREAT DODDINGTON CLUB……..……………………………………….…….…………………………28 J&D MOBILITY …………………..……………………………………………………………….….…..…….29 PAULA ROSS TRAVEL COUNSELLOR ………………………………………………….……………….30 J HURST ELECTRICAL SERVICES/ JACQUI BRAMALL PODIATRIST.………………………..31 DG MOTOR SERVICES……………………………………………………..…..………………….…………40 6 ADVERTISERS …/CONT WELLINGBOROUGH TYRES ……………………..………….……………….…….…………………….…46 HIGHAM FERRARS FARMERS’ MARKET ……………………..………….…….…………………….…47 DAN’S TREES AND GARDENS/ GLENFIELD ELECTRICS…………….………………..BACK PAGE PARISH, BOROUGH & COUNTY COUNCILLORS Chairman Vice Chairman Chris Davies Jim Sharp 01933 224450 01933 279367 [email protected] [email protected] Clerk Carol Mundy 01604 810237 [email protected] Councillors John Crisp - 01933 224122 [email protected] Kevin Howes - 01933 226098 [email protected] Linda Ross - 01933 440560 [email protected] Sarita Sharp - 07810 304987 [email protected] David Kelly - 01933 279711 [email protected] Alison Smith - 01933 274958 [email protected] Peter Cunningham - 07983711264 [email protected] Borough Councillor Barry Graves County Councillor 01933 224790 Rob Gough [email protected] 07791 519269 [email protected].
