Community Involvement Plan Colorado Smelter Superfund Site Pueblo, Colorado April 2015 Purpose The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Superfund Community Involvement Program is committed to promoting communication between the community and the agency. Active community involvement is crucial to the success of any public project. EPA’s community involvement activities at the Colorado Smelter Superfund site are designed to: • Inform the public of the nature of environmental issues associated with the site • Involve the public in Superfund decisions that will affect them • Involve the public in program responses under consideration • Inform the public of progress being made to implement cleanup remedies The purpose of the Superfund Community Involvement Plan (CIP) is to ensure communication between the community in and around the site, EPA, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (state health department), and the Pueblo City County Health Department (local health department); and to encourage community involvement in site activities. The plan is based on meetings and interviews with members of the Pueblo community. EPA interviewed a broad range of private residents, local government officials, businesses and community organizations. As the lead agency, EPA is responsible for implementing the community involvement program outlined in this Community Involvement Plan.
