This paper aims to contest some of these dominant/official narratives which have been discursively constructed and promoted by the secularist parties (including the ruling regime) and groups in Bangladesh over recent years. Examining the sociopolitical and historical facts and figures of the country, we have identified five major contested narratives related to (a) Bengali nationalism in East Pakistan, (b) foundational ideology of Bangladesh’s war of liberation, (c) state-sponsored Islamization in Bangladesh, (d) pro-liberation and anti-liberation dichotomy, and (e) war crimes trial. Drawing on a robust content analysis of the credible secondary sources substantiated by qualitative interviews, we have examined these dominant narratives and found that they are not supported by historical evidence and popular mandate, yet have been constructed largely to support and legitimize the current authoritarian regime. The paper offers both counter-narratives and some pragmatic policy recommendations to elude increasing polarization and sociopolitical instability and foster a peaceful democratic society in Bangladesh.

Delhi: Pages from a Forgotten History by Arthur Dudney (Hay House India, New Delhi, 2015, ISBN: 938139878X / 978-9381398784) Errata and Works Cited, updated 3 January 2016 (version 3) ERRATA AND CLARIFICATIONS [I am grateful to the readers who pointed out some of these errors. –AD] On pg 78 for “Nihāyat al-Jamāl (The Peak of Beauty, 1325)” read “Nihāyat al-Kamāl (The Peak of Perfection, 1325)”—although Sharma 2005 cites the title as the former, other scholars and the published edition (Qaisariyah Press, Delhi, 1913-4) give the latter. On pg 87 the fn on hadīs̄ is misleading. Instead read “The hadīs̄ are the reported sayings and actions of the Prophet that provide guidance for Muslims. Whereas the Qurʾān is considered by Muslims as a complete and immutable divine text, there has always been a vibrant tradition of assessing how trustworthy a particular hadīs̄ is.” On pg 92 for “the four schools” read “the four Sunni schools”. On pg 117 the paragraph beginning “In this state…” is a direct quotation and should be formatted as a blockquote. On pg 130 for “He was intolerant…” read “He was austere…”. Given the valence that the label “intolerant” has taken on in Indian politics in 2015, I hesitate to use it so cavalierly in a thumbnail sketch of a controversial historical figure like Aurangzeb. On pg 147, a note on the Z̤afarnāmah: The poem is included in the Sikh religious text Dasam Granth along with other works in various languages attributed to the Tenth Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh. The Dasam Granth includes about a thousand verses in Persian.

  • Revisiting the Dispute Over the First Under-Graduate Department of Geography in India
Trans.Inst.Indian Geographers ISSN 0970-9851 Revisiting the dispute over the first under-graduate department of geography in India Sarfaraz Alam, Varanasi Abstract Widespread confusion persists within the geography community on questions of ‘when and where was the first under-graduate department of geography established in India?’ A majority of Indian and foreign geographers who have worked on the history of geography in South Asia, consider that the first under-graduate department of geography was established in a college affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore in 1920. The present article contests the above claim by questioning the reliability of its sources by examining available literary sources on the history of geography in South Asia as well as by applying historical reasoning. The article establishes that, contrary to commonly held views, the first independent and full- fledged under-graduate department of geography in erstwhile British India was established in 1924 at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.
