RACING VICTORIA LIMITED 2013 ANNUAL REPORT ACING VICTOIA IMITED – 2013 ANNUAL REPORT Chairman’s foreword The 2012-13 thoroughbred racing season presented another fine showcase for our sport. During the season we farewelled a champion in Black Caviar and at the same time welcomed a new era with outstanding performances from a remarkable crop of three-year-olds and we look forward to these horses making their mark on racing in the seasons ahead. It was indeed a racing season to remember and I am pleased to present Racing Victoria’s Annual Report. The Annual Report includes Racing Victoria’s Financial Report along with the Financial Statements for the financial period ended 30 June 2013. The report also provides a snapshot of the racing season via key statistical data including premiership tables, the season’s Group 1 results and general racing statistics. Victorian racing is in a strong position and maintains its leadership in the racing industry in Australia in terms of the sport’s performance and popularity. ROBERT ROULSTON Chairman ACING VICTOIA IMITED – 2013 ANNUAL REPORT Racing snapshot Victoria was treated to some marvellous performances on the racetrack during the racing season. The traditional feature events of Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival once again captured racing fans across the country headed by the BMW Caulfield Cup, Sportingbet Cox Plate and Emirates Melbourne Cup which saw French star Dunaden, New Zealand- trained champion Ocean Park and the Team Williams import Green Moon respectively added to the state’s most prestigious honour rolls. However, it was again the undefeated superstar sprinter Black Caviar that captured the heart of the nation.

The $70,000 Eagle Technology Stakes is also a highlight with Veyron, Graphic and Deane Martin looking to start big campaigns over the summer. NZTR, in conjunction with the Wellington Racing Club, released a BETA version of the first weather station and track camera at Trentham race course on Monday night. The vision and data will provide in depth information for trainers and punters for the preceding seven days before a race meeting. Importantly for the club it will also give race goers the ability to see the weather at the track on race day, as conditions between Wellington city and the Hutt Valley can vary greatly. Installations at various other tracks throughout the country will follow over the upcoming months. Following an inspection of the Ashburton track by NZTR National Venue Inspector Garry Foskett on Wednesday 19 November and subsequently by the RIU on Thursday, 27 November trials have been scheduled for Wednesday 3 December. MCDONALD RARING TO GO IN LONGINES INTERNATIONAL JOCKEYS' CHAMPIONSHIP James McDonald is gearing up for the 2014 LONGINES International Jockeys' Championship (IJC) on 10 December. He was the LONGINES IJC runner-up on debut in 2011 and comes to the 2014 Happy Valley challenge in stellar form. McDonald was denied by Green Moon and Brett Prebble when runner-up in the 2012 Melbourne Cup on Fiorente when he was also just 20 but few jockeys have matched his impact on Australian racing at such a young age.

Last year’s race was the fourth Stewards’ Cup to have been staged at international Group 1 level, having been designated HKG1 since 1991 when the Pattern race system was introduced to Hong Kong. The race itself dates back to 1954 when, on 22 May, the first running of the Stewards’ Cup took place at Happy Valley Racecourse. That inaugural race was staged over 1200m and the distance stayed relatively consistent at around six furlongs until 1973 when Jungfrau won the first edition at around a mile – 1650m, to be precise.
