  • Justifying Sacrifice: Barack Obama and the Selling and Ending of the War in Afghanistan
Justifying sacrifice: Barack Obama and the selling and ending of the war in Afghanistan TREVOR MCCRISKEN* Just a month after entering office, US President Barack Obama spoke at the US Marine Corps base at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. His remarks focused on his plans to ‘responsibly’ end the war in Iraq and to deepen the commitment of the United States to the fight against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. One of the key motifs that Obama used in his speech was that of ‘sacrifice’—the need for all Americans to continue the age-old tradition of paying a price for the freedoms they enjoy. As he told the audience of US Marines: ‘The consequences of war are dire, the sacrifices immeasurable. You know because you have seen those sacrifices. You have lived them. And we all honor them.’ He then charac- terized this notion of sacrifice for one’s country as being part of a long tradition that was responsible for the very existence of the United States and an essential guarantor of its domestic freedom: Each of you has your own story. And that story is now a part of the history of the United States of America—a nation that exists only because free men and women have bled for it from the beaches of Normandy to the deserts of Anbar; from the mountains of Korea to the streets of Kandahar. You teach us that the price of freedom is great. Your sacrifice should challenge all of us—every single American—to ask what we can do to be better citizens.1 In order to ‘sell’ the renewed effort to bring the Afghanistan campaign to ‘a successful conclusion’, Obama has drawn heavily on the idea of ‘sacrifice’ by emphasizing in his rhetorical defence of the commitment of further US troops that the protection of the United States and its interests against further terrorist attacks compels America to bear the burden of sacrifice that continuing the war entails.

  • U.S. Senators: Vote YES on the Disability Treaty! © Nicolas Früh/Handicap International November 2013 Dear Senator
U.S. Senators: Vote YES on the Disability Treaty! © Nicolas Früh/Handicap International November 2013 Dear Senator, The United States of America has always been a leader of the rights of people with disabilities. Our country created the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ensuring the rights of 57.8 million Americans with disabilities, including 5.5 million veterans. The ADA inspired the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) treaty. The CRPD ensures that the basic rights we enjoy, such as the right to work and be healthy, are extended to all people with disabilities. Last December, America’s leadership diminished when the Senate failed to ratify the CRPD by 5 votes. In the pages that follow, you will find the names of 67,050 Americans who want you to vote Yes on the CRPD. Their support is matched by more than 800 U.S. organizations, including disability, civil rights, veterans’ and faith-based organizations. These Americans know the truth: • Ratification furthers U.S. leadership in upholding, championing and protecting the rights of children and adults with disabilities • Ratification benefits all citizens working, studying, or traveling overseas • Ratification creates the opportunity for American businesses and innovations to reach international markets • Ratification does not require changes to any U.S. laws • Ratification does not jeopardize U.S. sovereignty The Senate has an opportunity that doesn’t come along often in Washington—a second chance to do the right thing and to ratify the CRPD. We urge you and your fellow Senators to support the disability treaty with a Yes vote when it comes to the floor. We must show the world that U.S.

  • The Left/Right Paradigm
The Left/Right Paradigm The left/right paradigm is one of the explicit strategies that the Big Foundations and the rest of the global elite utilize today in order to divide people and prevent individuals from discovering the authentic truth about the New World Order. To understand this paradigm, it must be imperative to learn what a global government will consist of. Global government is a dictatorship ( which has components of socialism, communism, and fascism ) with the centralization of power to a few, it’s about the total government control over a society, the suspension of civil liberties, the elimination of private property, the end of a free enterprise system, brutal and indiscriminate murder (via population control, concentration camps for dissidents ), and big government bureaucracies. Folks from the Left and the Right reject this tyranny . Yet, many are brainwashed into thinking that fascism, communism, or totalitarianism is a representation of the Left or the Right. The fascism of Adolf Hitler and the communism of Stalin were funded by the exact same people consisting of fake capitalist (n ot real capitalists, but they actually globalists and internationalists. These men are in the Knights of Malta, Pilgrims, high level Freemasons, Bilderbergers, and other groups ) bankers and industrialists from New York City, Washington D.C., London, Rome, etc. Some of these bankers’ names are Knight of Malta Franz von Papen , Knight of Malta & Pilgrim Joseph Kennedy, Freemason Armaud Hammer, Bonesman Averill Harriman, CFR member John D. Rockefeller, Aristotle Sokratis "Ari"/"Aristo" Onassis (the author Fritz Springmeier accuses Onassis of selling guns and oil to both sides of WWII), John J.

  • Textualization of Pat Tillman: Understanding the Relationships Between Person, Discourse, and Ideology
Abstract Title of dissertation: TEXTUALIZATION OF PAT TILLMAN: UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PERSON, DISCOURSE, AND IDEOLOGY Arthur W. Herbig, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Robert N. Gaines Department of Communication This project is a critical examination of the ways in which the life and death of Pat Tillman were shaped into a discursive Pat Tillman. This is not a project that examines the life led by the person Pat Tillman. The discursive Pat Tillman can be found in the pages of magazines, on television, invoked by politicians, and even memorialized in song. It is Pat Tillman, the discursive creation, that is my focus. In this project I take for granted that Pat Tillman only existed in places like the pages of books or on film. What is not lost on me and should not be lost on the reader of this project is my own participation in this process. With this project I have entered into the very discourses that I seek to critique. This is an analysis of the existence of a Pat Tillman that many people still know and the ideas that help shape how that existence is communicated. My critique focuses on the existence of a discursive Pat Tillman as a rhetorical phenomenon, drawing upon scholarship that can inform an understanding of how the life of Pat Tillman became the material for public discourse. My analysis interconnects Michel Foucault’s (1972) work on knowledge and discourse with Michael Calvin McGee (1990) referred to as rhetorical fragments, in order to provide a foundation for understanding the discursive existence of Pat Tillman.

Unlike VoteVets, Vets for Freedom, headed shortly after its founding by Army Veteran Pete Hegseth, argued that the war in Iraq was necessary and that a surge of troops would win the conflict decisively. VoteVets argued that the war in Iraq was not wise to launch and that a surge of troops would merely keep the cork on the bottle until we left (something that we today know is true, with the rise of ISIS and raging sectarian violence). Pete and I were frequently pitted against each other on television. The debates, while often very heated and with a lot of yelling over each other, were honest. Pete didn’t hide the fact that he was there to advocate for neoconservatives, and I was honest about representing those opposed to their worldview as it pertained to the use of our military. After Vets for Freedom folded, and after having run unsuccessfully for Senate as a Republican, Pete Hegseth got bankrolled by the Koch brothers to start up a new group, Concerned Veterans for America. Behind closed doors, as you’ll see in the attached report, Pete is quite honest about the fact that the Koch organization “literally created” the group that he heads.
