Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with a poor prognosis and high incidence of drug-resistance. However, most inbred strains of mice have proven resistant to gastric carcinogenesis. To establish useful models which mimic human gastric cancer phenotypes, investigators have utilized animals infected with Helicobacter species and treated with carcinogens. In addition, by exploiting genetic engineering, a variety of transgenic and knockout mouse models of gastric cancer have emerged, such as INS-GAS mice and TFF1 knockout mice. Investigators have used the combination of carcinogens and gene alteration to accelerate gastric cancer development, but rarely do mouse models show an aggressive and metastatic gastric cancer phenotype that could be relevant to preclinical studies, which may require more specific targeting of gastric progenitor cells. Here, we review current gastric carcinogenesis mouse models and provide our future perspectives on this field. -

ABSTRACT Introduction: Incidence rates of anal cancer have been rising worldwide in the last 20 years. Due to embryological, histological and immunohistochemical similarities between the anal canal and the cervix, routine screening with anal cytology for precursor lesions in high-risk groups has been adopted. Objective: To determine interobserver agreement for the diagnosis of anal neoplasia by anal cytology. Material and methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in 324 women with cervical intraepithelial or invasive cancers, for screening of anal cancer, from December 2008 to June 2009. Three hundred twenty-four cytological samples were analyzed by three cytopathologists. Cytological evaluation was based on the revised Bethesda terminology; samples were also classified into negative and positive for atypical cells. We calculated the kappa statistic with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) to assess agreement among the three cytopathologists. Results: Interobserver agreement in the five categories of the Bethesda terminology was moderate (kappa for multiple raters: 0.6). Agreement among cytopathologists 1, 2 and 3 with a consensus diagnosis was strong (kappa: 0.71, 0.85 and 0.82, respectively). -

Although anal dysplasia may be treated successfully, individuals with HIV are at increased risk of it recurring and may need to be monitored closely by a trained physician. Consistent condom use reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of transmitting HPV. -

Abstract Introduction: Cervical cancer screening using Pap smear is the cornerstone of any cancer control program. The study aimed to know the burden of various cervical lesions which were assessed by conventional Pap smear study. Methodology: We included 500 referred symptomatic patients in the study. The history, deatiled clinical examination, per speculum examination and a vaginal examination were performed for all women. Pap smear was used to screen all women for cervical cancer. Results: Mean age of the study population was 44 years and the most common complaint was whitish discharge per vaginam (54%). Classifying patients according to the Bethesda System 2001 Guidelines, we observed 61% (n = 303) cases to be Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy (NILM), 36% (n = 182) as Atypical Squamous Cells (ASC), 2% (n = 10) as Atypical Endocervical Cells (AEC) and 1% (n = 05) as unsatisfactory. Of the 303 cases of NILM, non-specific inflammatory changes were seen in 63%, reactive cellular changes in 21%, atrophic changes in 10%, candidiasis in 3%, Gardnerella vaginalis in 2% and inflammation with Trichomonas in 1%. -

The Papanicolaou stain is a gold-standard staining method for tumor diagnosis in human cytology. However, it has not been used routinely in veterinary cytology, because of its complicated multistep procedure and requirement for wet fixation. Currently, a rapid Papanicolaou stain using air-dried smears is utilized in human cytology, but usefulness of this rapid-air-dry Papanicolaou (RAD-Pap) stain in the veterinary field has not been fully evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the RAD-Pap stain by using quantitative analysis. Air-dried impression smears were collected from tumor specimens and stained with RAD-Pap and Giemsa. Twelve parameters representing the criteria of malignancy were quantitated, and characteristics of the RAD-Pap were evaluated statistically. The RAD-Pap stain could be applied to all the smears, and images of nucleoli and chromatin patterns were clear and detailed. In quantitative analysis with the RAD-Pap stain, but not with the Giemsa stain, dispersion of nucleolus size and dispersion of nucleolus/nucleus ratio in malignant tumors were significantly higher than those in benign tumors. -

Their blood samples were tested for CD4 count. Papanicolaou staining technique was adopted-for demonstrating koilocytes. Results showed that, high koilocytes count of 39.0% and low CD4 Count of 350 lymphocyte counts /µl were observed; and low monthly mean koilocytes count of 7.60% and high CD4 Count of 687 lymphocytes counts/ µl were observed in the female and male cohorts respectively. High monthly prevalence count of koilocytes and low CD4 Count in the female cohorts and verse versa in the male cohorts were significantly correlated (P<0.05). Burk, M.D., and Marc Van Ranst, M.D. Abstract: Four Asian lions (Panthera leo pérsica), two wild and two captive, were diagnosed with focal oral hyperplasia affecting the ventral surface of their tongues. Focal, flat, sessile lesions consisted of hyperplastic, stratified squamous epithelium. Koilocytotic atypia was evident in the upper layers of cells, some of which contained characteristic intranuclear papillomavirus particles visible by electron microscopy. In addition, large amphophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were evident in the koilocytes and were considered to be a product of the viral E4 gene. Papillomavirus group- specific antigens were detected by immunohistochemistry in the atypical cell nuclei. Conserved papillomavirus antigenic epitopes differed from epitopes found in cutaneous papillomavirus-induced lesions from domestic cats. An 8,000-base pair DNA fragment, linearized by Bam HI digestion, was detected by Southern blot hybridization probed with a mixed human papillomavirus genomic probe. Limited restriction endonuclease studies of DNA prepared using an oral hyperplastic lesion from an Asian lion indicate that this is a novel feline papillomavirus different from the domestic cat cutaneous papillomavirus. Tissues are aggregates or groups of cells organized to perform one or more specific functions. Epithelium is an avascular tissue composed of cells that cover the exterior body surfaces and line internal closed cavities (including the vascular system) and body tubes that communicate with the exterior (the alimentary, respiratory, and genitourinary tracts). Epithelium also forms the secretory portion (parenchyma) of glands and their ducts.
