TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 28 October 2008 RE: Media Summary Wednesday 29 October to Monday 03 November 2008 Slater takes place among the greats: AUSTRALIA 52 ENGLAND 4. Billy Slater last night elevated himself into the pantheon of great Australian fullbacks with a blistering attacking performance that left his coach and Kangaroos legend Ricky Stuart grasping for adjectives. Along with Storm teammate and fellow three-try hero Greg Inglis, Slater turned on a once-in-a-season performance to shred England to pieces and leave any challenge to Australia's superiority in tatters. It also came just six days after the birth of his first child, a baby girl named Tyla Rose. Kiwis angry at grapple tackle: The Kiwis are fuming a dangerous grapple tackle on wing Sam Perrett went unpunished in last night's World Cup rugby league match but say they won't take the issue further. Wing Sam Perrett was left lying motionless after the second tackle of the match at Skilled Park, thanks to giant Papua New Guinea prop Makali Aizue. Replays clearly showed Aizue, the Kumuls' cult hero who plays for English club Hull KR, wrapping his arm around Perrett's neck and twisting it. Kiwis flog Kumuls: New Zealand 48 Papua New Guinea NG 6. A possible hamstring injury to Kiwis dynamo Benji Marshall threatened to overshadow his side's big win over Papua New Guinea at Skilled Park last night. Arguably the last superstar left in Stephen Kearney's squad, in the absence of show-stoppers like Roy Asotasi, Frank Pritchard and Sonny Bill Williams, Marshall is widely considered the Kiwis' great white hope.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 14 April 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 07 April to Tuesday 14 April 2009 Give us a chance: WITH France joining Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand to make up an international quad-nations series this year, Fiji Bati centre Darryl Millard has called on the Pacific Nations to be considered too. After the 2008 Rugby League World Cup shake up of the international calendar by the Rugby League International Federation, it has been proposed that a Pacific Cup be held this year. The winner of the tournament enters the 2010 Rugby League Four Nations tournament (consisting of Australia, New Zealand, England and a qualifying nation). A Pacific Cup is also proposed to be held in 2011. Jones not available for Kiwis: He still has that magic touch but little general Stacey Jones has ruled himself out of contention for New Zealand's clash with Australia next month at Lang Park. The scheming halfback said he would not be available for selection for the Brisbane match which takes place on May 8, the day after his 33rd birthday. After one year out of rugby league, Jones made a shock return to the NRL this season and has shown he still has a knack for creating tries. Linwood win 17-try see-saw: Former Warrior Kane Ferris scored a match-winning try on the stroke of fulltime as the Linwood Keas snuck home in a 94-point rugby league thriller against east-side arch rival Aranui. Linwood's Canterbury Bulls hooker Nathan Sherlock and Aranui Eagles back Tim Rangihuna both scored four tries as the Keas clung to a 48-46 victory at Rugby League Park on Saturday.

I nearly always think about him when the Bulldogs are set to take on Parramatta. There isn’t a year goes I by when I don’t have at least one conversation about this player who, on one fateful September day in 1998, saw his career come to an end. He set a new benchmark for horrid individual performances on a rugby league fi eld. Now, to give Carige’s performance context, it is important to understand the simmering hatred between Canterbury and Parramatta at the time. The Bulldogs and Eels were wild rivals in the 1980s but that was an enmity built out of style and the pursuit of superiority rather than any underlying natural disposition of dislike between the two outfi ts. These days, the rivalry remains strong but it is a very one-sided deal with little respect given to the Eels by the Bulldogs faithful. But, in the 1990s, the feud was hot – the hottest feud in the game.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 16 March 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 10 February to Monday 16 March 2009 Bronson Harrison following in Wiki's footsteps: In Canberra Raiders circles there are few compliments bigger than being compared with club legend Ruben Wiki. So as Bronson Harrison prepares to play his first game for the Raiders tomorrow night he can rest assured he has the complete backing of his teammates. Missing World Cup triumph only regret: Everyone from the coaches, Stephen Kearney and Wayne Bennett, and seemingly, through to the kit man have been lauded for their roles in the Kiwis' stunning World Cup win. But one man whose exploits are often overlooked is Roy Asotasi. Asotasi wasn't at Brisbane that famous night when the Kiwis upset Australia 34-20. He still had an arm in a sling, thanks to the torn pectoral muscle sustained in the last 10 minutes of his penultimate NRL game of the season. It dashed any hopes of captaining the Kiwis at the World Cup. Bennett rues letting Harrison slip away: It's not often that Wayne Bennett admits he got it wrong. But that was certainly the case with Bronson Harrison. About the time Bennett signed on to coach the Dragons, Bronson's manager, Sam Ayoub, shopped the Tigers back-rower to several clubs. Bennett was given the opportunity to snap up the 23-year-old but passed. The Kiwi international subsequently signed with the Raiders. Battle looms for Kiwi T'eo: Auckland-born Bronco Ben Te'o is refusing to comment on a possible battle between Queensland and New Zealand for his services.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 02 March 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 24 February to Monday 02 March 2009 Horo sets new goal on sideline: IT'S a cliche but league is in Mark Horo's blood, always has been, always will be. The former Parramatta, Wests, Warriors and Kiwis star may have hung the boots up over a decade ago but the game remains a huge part of his life. Rhinos in for a tough task, says McClennan: LEEDS coach Brian McClennan has downplayed suggestions his side will crush Manly in the World Club Challenge. Traditionally, Super League sides have dominated the WCC with Sydney Roosters, who beat the Warriors in the 2002 NRL Grand Final, the last team from the southern hemisphere to win the title. Apart from the travel factor - tomorrow's match will be the tenth in a row in the UK - another reason the Super League sides have often claimed the silverware is the timing of the contest. League clubs to address Sparc report: Auckland league clubs will hear the recommendations in the Sparc report into the game and the reasons change is needed, from the review's author Sir John Anderson today. Sir John will speak after the Auckland Rugby League holds its annual general meeting this morning, the ARL board having already indicated it supports the proposed changes to the national make-up of the game. Titans boss warns defectors: Gold Coast Titans managing director Michael Searle has warned "generation Y" footballers they would be foolish to expect to waltz back into the NRL after get-rich-quick stints in rugby union.
