    The Kentucky Derby Museum Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky Role: Architect for New Museum Building Area: 45,000 sf Description: In 1982, our firm was selected through a national competition to design a new building for the Kentucky Derby Museum. Located at world- renowned Churchill Downs, the new building has been sited to create an entry courtyard that will impart a sense of arrival that is appropriate to this famous institution. This entry court is flanked on the east by the museum building, on the west by the historic Club House and on the south by the entry portico to Churchill Downs. In order to unify the architectural expression of these two buildings, the front façade of the new Museum is designed as a mirror image of the front of the Club House, with the entry doors of both buildings on an axis with each other. The Museum’s twin spires and slopping roof echo the architecture of the race track structure, which further unifies the Churchill Downs complex. Inside the 45,000 sf three-level building, there are approximately 18,000 sf of public areas, including 12,500 sf of long term and temporary exhibition galleries on two levels, a gift shop, dining facilities, and an auditorium. Outdoor areas south of the museum building will be used for live demonstrations of tracking and saddling, outdoor dining, and additional exhibits. The primary goal of the exhibition program is to tell visitors about horse racing in general and the Kentucky Derby in particular so that they will find their experience at Churchill Downs more interesting and enjoyable.

Built in 1969, and formally named the Kentucky Horse Center was originally situated on 133 acres of prime central Kentucky farmland. Established as a Thoroughbred training and sales facility by Rex Elsworth and Dr. Arnold Pessin, KHC was immediately popular as an alternative to training at the local racetracks. Amenities at the training facility included a 5/8-mile track with a metal roof, two barns made primarily of concrete with metal roofs that could house up to 260 horses and had 40 tack rooms and a state of the art, 920 seat sales pavilion, complete with a lounge and full service bar. He gained recognition after reporting about the Ohio River flood of 1937 and then moved out West where he started working as a stand-up comedian. Lance Burton A magician from Louisville, Lance Burton found a love for magic at a very young age. He moved to California after he turned 20 and quickly found success. He appeared on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson 10 times and appeared another 10 times during Jay Leno’s tenure as host. Burton has also performed for both Queen Elizabeth and President Reagan. Tom Cruise American actor and producer, Cruise is best known for his roles in such movies as “Risky Business,” “Jerry Maguire,” “A Few Good Men” and ‘Top Gun.” Cruise has been nominated for three Academy Awards® and won three Golden Globe Awards®. Before becoming one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Cruise lived in Louisville and attended Saint Xavier High School during his time in the city. Irene Dunne Nominated five times for the Academy Award® for best actress, Irene Dunne was famous from the 1930s to the 1950s. Growing up in Louisville, her father worked as a steamboat inspector. Dunne starred in many films including “The Awful Truth” and “My Favorite Wife,” both with Cary Grant.

    Kentucky Derby TRIVIA & FUN FACTS On a warm, sunny, Monday afternoon, May 17, 1875, fifteen three-year old Thoroughbred racehorses went to the post to compete in the first Kentucky Derby. About 10,000 fans were on hand to see H.P. McGrath’s colt Aristides set the pace and fight off all challengers to win. He was ridden to victory by jockey Oliver Lewis, one of thirteen African American jockeys to compete in the race. Since then, the Kentucky Derby has been held every year at Louisville’s Churchill Downs Racetrack, making it the longest continuous held sporting event in the United States. The race was developed by a group called the Louisville Jockey Club, led by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of the famous explorer William Clark of Lewis and Clark. Clark traveled to Europe, studying Thoroughbred racing business practices, and upon returning to Kentucky, led the Louisville Jockey Club in the building of a racetrack south of the city on property owned by Clark’s uncles, John and Henry Churchill. The track was not called Churchill Downs Racetrack until at least 1883, and not officially the name of the track until 1928. Clark patterned the Kentucky Derby after England’s Epsom Derby, a race for 3-year old Thoroughbreds at a distance of one mile and a half. The Derby distance was shortened to one mile and a quarter in 1896 and remains that distance today. After initial success, the track suffered financial hardship, and by 1894, the Louisville Jockey Club teetered towards bankruptcy. A new group bought the property, calling themselves the New Louisville Jockey Club.
