The 150 Books of Influence Project Committee recognizes the support of the Province of Nova Scotia. We are pleased to work in partnership with the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage to develop and promote our cultural resources for all Nova Scotians. Final publication date November 2017. Books are our finest calling card to the world. The stories they share travel far and wide, and contribute greatly to our global presence. Books have the power to profoundly express the complex and rich cultural life that makes Nova Scotia a place people want to visit, live, work and play. This year, the 150th Anniversary of Confederation provided Public Libraries across the province with a unique opportunity to involve Nova Scotians in a celebration of our literary heritage. The value of public engagement in the 150 Books of Influence project is demonstrated by the astonishing breadth and quality of titles listed within. The booklist showcases the diversity and creativity of authors, both past and present, who have called Nova Scotia home. -

Tyson (Chapel Hill & London: University of North Carolina Press, 1999) Stirrings in the Jug: Black Politics in the Post-Segregation Era, Adolph Reed, Jr. (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1999) In the United States few would argue that race is not a central divide, cutting through almost all aspects of social, economic, and cultural life, and drawing a line in the political sand of civil society. For Canadians, the realities of race have, supposedly, been more obscured. These realities are hidden in histories that mythologize marginalization and that wash partially clean the blood-stained record of violence long waged against those marked by the arbitrary, historically-contextualized codes of racialized 'colour': white vs non white. Yet race, for all its mysticized social construction, is increasingly recognized as a 2001 CanLIIDocs 164 potent factor in Canada's past, precisely because it is a troubling 'problem' in our present. "Racing the nation" means acknowledging the powerful continuities, not in the pseudo scientific biological distinctions of census-taking and physiological difference, but in the historically-embedded racisms that have articulated whiteness as power, and the practices that flow from this, segmenting society in diverse ways. The disparate subterranean streams that flow from this process have fed, over the centuries, a common well of racism. Out of this well institutions and individuals have quenched their thirst for order, progress, and democracy in poisonous, if often unappreciated, rationalizations of brutalizing inequality. -
Mechanisms for Enhancing the Retirement Income System of Canada
Province of Nova Scotia Department of Finance MECHANISMS FOR ENHANCING THE RETIREMENT INCOME SYSTEM IN CANADA The Government of Nova Scotia is working with other provinces and territories, and the Government of Canada, to consider opportunities for enhancing Canada’s retirement income system. The overall goal is to increase savings from employment income of individuals (i.e. future retirees) who are not currently saving enough to obtain sufficient levels of replacement income to maintain their standard of living in retirement. Finance Ministers have been informed by comprehensive research as well as proposals and comments submitted by numerous interest groups and individuals. They acknowledged the importance of financial literacy and the central role that the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) plays in our government supported retirement income system. Most Ministers have agreed to consider a modest, phased-in, and fully-funded enhancement to the CPP in order to increase coverage and adequacy. Ministers further agreed to continue to work on pension innovations that would allow financial institutions to offer broad based defined contribution pension plans to multiple employers, all employees, and to the self-employed. Results of further work on technical and implementation issues will be presented at the late Fall 2010 meeting. -

Self-isolation requirements in Nova Scotia Revised September 8, 2021 DOMESTIC TRAVELERS Self-isolation requirements are based on vaccination status and testing for anyone traveling from Canadian provinces and territories outside Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. This includes Nova Scotia residents returning to the province. Isolation requirements are as follows: • People who are fully vaccinated do not have to self-isolate but testing is still recommended. • People who are not fully vaccinated must self-isolate for at least 7 days and cannot leave isolation until they get 2 negative tests results. Fully vaccinated means you had two doses of a World Health Organization approved vaccine (or 1 dose of Janssen) at least 14 days before arriving in Nova Scotia. If you received your second dose of vaccine less than 14 days before arriving in Nova Scotia, it does not count toward your vaccination status. Children 18 and younger must follow the isolation requirements for the least vaccinated adult they are traveling with. If the child is more vaccinated than the adult they are traveling with, they should isolate based on their own vaccination status. Children 16 and older can have their own form using the vaccination information of the least vaccinated adult they are traveling with. Younger children should be included on the same form of the least vaccinated adult they are traveling with. Testing for the purposes of ending isolation earlier than 14 days must be done in Nova Scotia, not in advance of arrival. It cannot be a rapid test. It must be a standard PCR lab test which usually takes up to 72 hours to get results. -

Cultural Assets of NovA scotiA African Nova scotian tourism Guide 2 Come visit the birthplace of Canada’s Black community. Situated on the east coast of this beautiful country, Nova Scotia is home to approximately 20,000 residents of African descent. Our presence in this province traces back to the 1600s, and we were recorded as being present in the provincial capital during its founding in 1749. Come walk the lands that were settled by African Americans who came to the Maritimes—as enslaved labour for the New England Planters in the 1760s, Black Loyalists between 1782 and 1784, Jamaican Maroons who were exiled from their home lands in 1796, Black refugees of the War of 1812, and Caribbean immigrants to Cape Breton in the 1890s. The descendants of these groups are recognized as the indigenous African Nova Scotian population. We came to this land as enslaved and free persons: labourers, sailors, farmers, merchants, skilled craftspersons, weavers, coopers, basket-makers, and more. We brought with us the remnants of our cultural identities as we put down roots in our new home and over time, we forged the two together and created our own unique cultural identity. Today, some 300 years later, there are festivals and gatherings throughout the year that acknowledge and celebrate the vibrant, rich African Nova Scotian culture. While most of these campuses are included, the list will gradually become more complete as we learn more about specific traditional territories. When requested, we have also included acknowledgements for other post-secondary institutions as well. We wish to emphasize that this is a guide, not a script. We are recommending the acknowledgements that have been developed by local university-based Indigenous councils or advisory groups, where possible. New Exhibition on Viola Desmond Opens at Bank of Canada Museum
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Media Relations November 29, 2018 613-782-8782 New exhibition on Viola Desmond opens at Bank of Canada Museum OTTAWA, ONTARIO — The Bank of Canada Museum is inviting Canadians of all ages to visit the new exhibition A Noteworthy Woman, which depicts the life of Viola Desmond, an icon of the human rights and social justice movement in Canada and the first Canadian woman to appear on a regular bank note. The exhibition opens to the public on November 30 and will feature rare and never-before-displayed artifacts from Viola Desmond’s life. The exhibition also explores the imagery on the newly circulating $10 bank note. “Soon, many Canadians will carry a Viola Desmond note with them in their wallets. But the lessons of her life must continue to be told,” said Senior Deputy Governor Carolyn A. Wilkins at an event marking the launch of the new exhibition. “That’s why I’m glad that, through this exhibition, people will be able to learn more about her history, and Canada’s history.” Desmond, a successful black Nova Scotia businesswoman, defiantly refused to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre in 1946 and was subsequently jailed, convicted and fined. Her case is one of the first known legal challenges against racial segregation brought forth by a black woman in Canada. Highlights of the exhibition include the following: .
