Pas le choix : la surface du globe est dévastée. Depuis des générations, les habitants de la cité d'Ember mènent donc une vie harmonieuse sous les millions de lumières qui illuminent leur cité souterraine. Pourtant, depuis quelque temps, les coupures se multiplient et face à la nuit qui menace, tous commencent à s'inquiéter. Leur survie est en jeu... La Cité de l'ombre est tiré d'un roman éponyme de l'écrivain californien Jeanne DuPrau, édité chez Gallimard jeunesse. Derrière le récit fantastique de La Cité de l'ombre se cache un message écologique qu'explique l'auteur Jeanne DuPrau : "À travers cette histoire, je voulais montrer à quel point la nature est précieuse et fragile. Nous avons le terrifiant pouvoir de détruire notre planète. En racontant cette histoire à toutes les générations, et en particulier aux plus jeunes, je voulais leur dire qu'il est de notre responsabilité à tous de protéger notre environnement." Un film familial distrayant à voir au cinéma à partir de mercredi. Bande-annonce Lina et Doon vivent dans la plus étrange des villes : Ember. Pour protéger l'espèce humaine d'une guerre totale, cette ville souterraine fut bâtie deux cents ans plus tôt. Creusée sous terre, elle est éclairée artificiellement. Mais l'énergie et les vivres commencent à manquer, et les dirigeants se moquent de l'avenir. Un jour, Lina découvre un message secret qui semble expliquer comment quitter cet endroit. Lina et Doon vont ils réussir à fuir leur cité vouée à la disparition ? Un autre monde est il à leur portée ? La ville d'Ember en est d'ailleurs la conséquence directe. Par ailleurs, la fable nous montre des dirigeants très peu concernés par la désagrégation de l'espace vital puisque jouissant d'un luxe synonyme de pouvoir. Dans La Cité de l'Ombre, le cri d'alarme est muet et brut mais néanmoins efficace. Le film interroge également les enfants sur la notion d'interdit et la confiance aveugle en l'autorité. La lumière en tant que synonyme d'espoir n'est pas toujours celle que l'on croit. La jeunesse prend le pouvoir et botte les fesses amorphes des adultes. "Jules Verne n'aurait pas renié ce beau film qui évite les clichés. L'image offre une belle plastique, les dialogues ne sont jamais superflus... Et Bill Murray, en maire profiteur et vorace, est irrésistible" - Clara Dupont-Monod (Marianne). Bienvenue à Ember ! Véritable personnage à part entière, la ville souterraine d'Ember a demandé un soin tout particulier. Le réalisateur Gil Kenan explique : "Avec le chef décorateur Martin Laing, nous avons donc voulu construire un environnement très réaliste. Nous avons commencé par nous mettre à la place des Bâtisseurs, les pères fondateurs qui ont hâtivement construit cette Cité pour protéger les citoyens d'un danger inexpliqué, et nous nous sommes demandé ce dont ils pouvaient avoir besoin pour rester dans cet abri pendant au moins deux cents ans. La Cité était techniquement très avancée à l'époque de sa construction, et pour l'alimenter en énergie, les Bâtisseurs ont conçu un générateur actionné par la rivière que les citoyens ont soigneusement entretenu pendant deux siècles." Les studios habituels étant trop petits pour accueillir la Cité d'Ember, l'équipe du film a construit les décors en Irlande, dans un ancien hangar haut de près de trente mètres que la compagnie maritime de Belfast Harland and Woolf utilisait pour peindre la coque de ses paquebots. The Builders of Ember, fearing an apocalyptic event, built the city to ensure that humans would continue to exist. Later we discover that the Builders planned that future generations would "grow up with no knowledge of a world outside, so that they (would) feel no sorrow for what they have lost." The city was designed to last no longer than 220 years, at the conclusion of which the citizens of Ember were to receive instructions contained in a time-locked box held by the mayor that described how to leave the city. However, over the course of 241 years, the box has popped open and been mislaid. The people of Ember have no knowledge of what lies beyond their electric flood lamps.
