1/27/2015 Blog Wow: View blog Rebecca Stanton A Midsummer Night's Dream, redux Oct 4, 2013 2:25 PM As we discussed in class on Thursday, while Shakespeare's play is both more light hearted and just plain "lighter" easier to digest than Spenser's deliberately MAGIC AND MODERNITY difficult, densely allegorical poem, A Midsummer Night's Dream nonetheless Official Course Blog shares certain background assumptions and even thematic concerns with The Faerie Queene. Similar vocabulary is used to talk about magic, love, dreams, visions as in The Faerie Queene, the inherent unreliability (and potential demonic origin?) of dreams and visions, and even of straightforward sensory data about the material world, is at issue. To put it another way, it's not just the "mind's eye" that is easily bamboozled our actual eyes are as well. What does Shakespeare's comedy have to say about empirical knowledge and human understanding? Where does magic play into all of this? Fairies, as we've seen in Spenser, are serious business not, as the historian Diane Purkiss suggests in the introduction to her superb At the Bottom of the Garden: A Dark History of Fairies, Hobgoblins, Nymphs, and Other Troublesome Things, merely "tiresome wingy thingies who are always good." Purkiss continues: "Actually, as we shall see, fairies are an invention that almost wholly lacks moral engagement. Marin Shakespeare’s 2018 Teen Touring Company is proud to present A Midsummer Night’s Dream Directed by Jackson Currier Introduction to A Midsummer Night’s Dream “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is considered to be one of, if not the most, easily accessible plays in all of Shakespeare’s cannon. One exposure to the wonderfully rich and magical characters within the story and you can understand its popularity. Shakespeare’s plays are full of magic. If you visit Forest Meadows for the mainstage plays at Marin Shakespeare Company this summer, you’ll see examples of this. In "Hamlet," the title character is visited by the ghost of his father. "Pericles" tells of loss and redemption, and has a character brought back to life, and a goddess visitation who guides the hero to his lost love. Both plays are filled with supernatural phenomena and magical happenings. "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" is Shakespeare’s most magical play, and it is one of the most beautiful. While magic can be used for vengeance and malevolence, its function is much gentler in “Dream”, and much more comedic. In “Dream”, magic is used to make people fall in love. (And occasionally to turn people into donkeys!) The play, in turn, casts a spell on the audiences who watch it, leading them to fall in love with its hilarious characters, ingenious plot twists and its very happy ending. Things to look for in the play 1) Many people consider “Dream” to be Shakespeare’s greatest comedy ever. One main reason is the flawless intertwining of four plots: A Duke's wedding, four lovers in romantic entanglements, a war between the King and Queen of the Fairies, and amateur craftsmen rehearsing a play. -

SHAKESPEAREANCES.COM Synopsis: A Midsummer Night’s Dream The fairies create a lot of havoc—misapplying love potions, causing confusion among young lovers, turning a guy’s head into that of an ass, causing foul weather—but that’s nothing compared to the play a bunch of amateur thespians put on for the Duke of Athens’ marriage festivities. By William Shakespeare, written about 1596, first printed in a 1600 quarto Act I, Scene 1 Theseus, the Duke of Athens, has defeated the Amazons in a war but now intends to marry their queen, Hippolyta. The wed- ding is set for four days’ hence, and while he is eager to get on with the nuptials, she is showing much more patience. Into the scene comes Egeus with his daughter, Hermia, and two men, Lysander and Demetrius. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, but she is in love with Ly- sander and refuses her father’s will. For this, Egeus wants his daughter executed under Athenian law. Exiled to Freedom A Memoir of Censorship in Iran Mahmood Karimi-Hakak This memoir is dedicated to the struggle of Iranian youth for the right to live in a free society I would like to share my story, a story of the struggle for liberty, of the sup- pression of creativity, and finally of my exile to freedom. Unfortunately, I don’t know if I can continue because the editorial staff of TDR has not yet approved the content of what I might say. You see in my country, Iran, just about anything we say or do in the public arena must be preapproved by the censors, and no explanation will ever be given if it is not approved. In the United States of America, also, there are reasons why my story would not be published. For example, if my writing were bad or blatantly offensive, vio- lently racist, or sexist. Or, if my story did not fit the subject matter of TDR, had no relation to performance, etc. It could always be rejected as a matter of style and taste. But censorship would not be the primary factor. In Iran, cen- sorship is not only common, but also expected—in the theatre, in Parliament, and even in the Friday Prayer. There was one time I was asked to address an audience without a prepared, preapproved, edited text. That was the night of 23 February 1999, when my production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was closed. On that night, I was ordered to explain to my audience why the production had been summarily canceled. -

Within Midsummer Nights: Dichotomies in the Collective Dream Within Midsummer Nights: Dichotomies in the Collective Dream Cheryl New Dr. Wayne Glowka Faculty Sponsor Generations of readers have recognized William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a light-hearted comedy that delights and engages. Its subject appears straight-forward and winningly superficial: love—love that conquers all—and how it affects the lives of four Athenian youths. But if we are to look to the title to receive some direction, we would notice a succession of nouns: summer, night, and dream. What do these things mean? Each of them has an opposite, an archetypical antithesis that rules one aspect of the play. These pairs, as well as the pairs of lovers them- selves, enforce an extended series of dichotomies on the play which in turn veil wonderlands of meaning and symbolic significance. The unconscious interpretation of these meanings echoes the nature of dreams—that which we recall as a perpetual memory but never experience. -

(He borrowed the tale of the doomed lovers from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.) As a part of Shakespeare’s play, six workers, sometimes called “mechanicals” or “clowns,” decide to present a play for the festivities that will follow the wedding of the Duke of Athens. In this one-act, we see the mechanicals getting their parts, then rehearsing in the woods the night before the wedding. Of course, these men know nothing about acting or play production, and, as a result, the audience is treated to a rousing, laughable performance by inept, though enthusiastic, actors doing the best they can. They do not think they are funny; on the contrary, they believe they are performing this tragic love story of two Babylonian young people quite well. The play will tell the story of the doomed lovers Pyramus and Thisby -- of how they met at Ninus’ tomb, declared their love, and died bloody deaths.
