Iraq Thrash Al-Ahli by Four Goals in Preparation for Crucial Qualifier Iraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Friendly Match: Al-Ahli (Qatar) 0-4 Iraq IRAQ THRASH AL-AHLI BY FOUR GOALS IN PREPARATION FOR CRUCIAL QUALIFIER Iraq put four goals past Qatar Stars League side Al-Ahli on Thursday in their final friendly game before the must-win encounter with UAE in World Cup Qualifying on 15 November. Left-back Dhurgham Ismail opened the scoring for the Lions with a smart finish in the first-half, before captain on the day Alaa Abdul-Zahra doubled the lead four minutes into the second period. The game was sealed towards the end by two of Iraq's promising players from the Iraqi League. 19 year old Amjad Attwan of Naft Al-Wasat scored the third goal, while Al-Minaa striker Mohammed Jabbar Shokan, the third-highest scorer of the 2016-17 league so far, bagged Iraq's final goal with 13 minutes left on the clock. Iraq's lineup was a strong one, with Mohammed Hameed in goal behind centre- backs Ahmed Ibrahim and Mustafa Nadhim and full-backs Waleed Salem and Dhurgham Ismail. Saad Abdul-Amir and Brwa Nouri were in the centre of the park with Ahmed Yasin and Justin Meram on the wings, and Alaa Abdul-Zahra played behind striker Mohanad Abdul-Raheem. The lineup for this match is set to be very similar to what Iraq will play against UAE, so this is a good confidence-boosting victory, although UAE (boasting Asian Footballer of the Year nominee Omar Abdulrahman) will undoubtedly be a much tougher test than Al-Ahli. • Iraq 4-0 Thailand: Mohanad Scores Four As Iraq
Iraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Iraq 4-0 Thailand MOHANAD SCORES FOUR AS IRAQ FINALLY GET POINTS ON THE BOARD Iraq picked up their first win under new manager Radhi Shenaishil as a scintillating performance from Mohanad Abdul-Raheem saw the 23 year-old score all four goals in a 4-0 win. Iraq, who finished below Thailand in the second round of qualifiers, made sure not to make the same mistakes that they did last time as they got off to a blistering start as Ahmed Yasin's corner eventually found Mohanad who converted from close range after just seven minutes. Iraq's captain Alaa Abdul-Zahra should have doubled the lead soon after but his effort was saved. It didn't take long for the second goal to come however; Ahmed Yasin headed onto the post from point-blank range before receiving the ball again and firing at goal only for the 'keeper to parry the ball straight to Mohanad who gladly tucked away his second. Iraq should have had a third minutes later when Ahmed Yasin's cross-cum-shot went in off of an offside Mohanad, and Iraq had further first-half chances through Udinese's Ali Adnan and Ahmed Yasin again. Iraq took their foot off the pedal in the second period and Thailand almost punished them for it as the Thais started to look more dangerous and create more chances. Thailand's hopes were effectively dashed though when Koravit Namwiset was sent off for an off-the-ball incident with Ahmad Ibrahim, and their substitute Prathum Chutong went off injured afterwards leaving them with nine men on the field.

Iraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Radhi Shenaishil announces final 23-man squad for WCQ Radhi Shenaishil has cut down his 38-man preliminary squad to 23 players ahead of Iraq's upcoming friendly with Iran and qualifying games with Australia and Saudi Arabia. Many of the fifteen omissions aren't that surprising - goalkeepers Fahad Talib, Ali Abdul-Hassan and Ali Yaseen are dropped, while defenders Ali Bahjat, Ali Lateef, Hussam Kadhim and Ahmed Abdul-Ridha have also been cut. Midfielders Hussein Ali, Mazen Fayadh and Osama Ali, and forwards Jassim Mohammed and Ali Akla are the other players who have expectedly been omitted. There are only three surprises in terms of dropped players. Arguably Iraq's best attacking player, Justin Meram, has had to withdraw from the squad due to fears over his status in the USA if he travels to Iran (where Iraq will play their game against Australia). Jawiya youngster Humam Tariq's place in the squad has been taken by Al-Zawraa's Amjad Kalaf, who is receiving his first call-up since the 2015 Asian Cup where he scored against the UAE. And the third surprising omission is that of midfielder Brwa Nouri - many fans wanted the Swedish-based player to start alongside Saad Abdul-Amir in midfield but it seems Radhi will keep faith in young midfielder Amjad Attwan. Some of the players in the squad, including the likes of Ali Adnan, Dhurgham Ismail and Ali Faez will not be available for the Iran friendly on 18 March due to club commitments, and will join the team a couple of days later.

Iraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Radhi Shenaishil announces 30-man squad for preparatory friendly Iraq have announced their 30-man squad for the friendly against Jordan (6 November, Amman) that will be played in preparation for their World Cup Qualifier against UAE (15 November, Abu Dhabi). The squad sees recalls for goalkeeper Jalal Hassan, Turkey- based defensive player Ali Faez, MLS star Justin Meram and young striker Ayman Hussein. Sweden-based midfielder Brwa Nouri joins up with the squad following the news that he is now eligible to play for Iraq despite previously playing for Sweden's youth teams, while uncapped Al-Talaba attacker Sattar Yaseen gets a call-up following some impressive performances in the Iraqi League. Fans will be disappointed to see that two of Iraq's best midfielders, Yaser Kasim and Ali Husni, are both not included in the squad, with Radhi saying that both players need time to fully recover from their respective injuries. The exclusion of the 2015-16 Iraqi Premier League joint top goalscorer Hammadi Ahmed from the squad has also surprised many. Fans have also been calling out for 2015-16 Iraqi Premier League Young Player of the Season, Hussein Ali of Al- Zawraa, to be given an opportunity in national team colours but his stellar domestic displays haven't been enough to earn the promising player a call-up this time around. Iraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Radhi Shenaishil announces 38-man preliminary squad for WCQ There are three notable absences from Radhi Shenaishil's recently announced preliminary squad. Osama Rashid, who recently moved to the Portuguese second division, was expected by many to be given a chance in midfield but Radhi has continued to leave him out of the set-up. Ayman Hussein, whose goal qualified Iraq for the Olympics last year, is the top scorer of the Iraqi League this season and is on fire - but he misses out after picking up an injury recently. The third absentee isn't a surprise, but it still continues to be talked about by Iraqi fans and that is Yaser Kasim. Iraq's best player just two years ago is now nowhere to be seen in the national team and Radhi has stated that Yaser does not have the passion to play for the country anymore. Radhi has called up a number of players who have been playing well in the Iraqi League, such as young prodigy Hussein Ali and defender Ahmed Abdul-Ridha, while there are recalls for attackers Hammadi Ahmed and Amjad Kalaf and a questionable first call-up for Dutch fourth division player Ali Akla. This 38-man squad will soon be cut down to 23 players in time for the Australia and Saudi Arabia games. Here is the preliminary squad in full: Name Position Club Mohammed Gassid (captain) Goalkeeper Al-Zawraa Mohammed Hameed Goalkeeper Al-Shorta Ali Abdul-Hassan Goalkeeper Al-Talaba Jalal Hassan Goalkeeper Naft Al-Wasat Fahad Talib Goalkeeper Al-Quwa

Iraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Saudi Arabia 1-0 Iraq - Player Ratings Mohammed Hameed: Not a game to remember for Hameed. Distribution was poor, gifting Saudi Arabia with a big chance. Should’ve done much better with the goal and was rescued by Ahmed Ibrahim after letting a tame shot slip past him. 5/10 Alaa Mhawi: Tried to get forward as much as possible and was one of the only Iraqis willing take players on and make forward passes. However his tendency to push high up the field did leave him out of position on a few occasions. 6/10 Ahmed Ibrahim: Made some exceptionally well-timed tackles and broke down the majority of Saudi Arabia’s attacks. Saved Iraq from going down a goal down in the first half with a last ditch clearance off the line. He also had Iraq’s best chance at the other end. 7/10 Rebin Sulaka: Broke down a lot of Saudi Arabia attacks with some strong tackling, however lost his position too often and made a few wayward passes that were lucky not to be punished. 6/10 Dhurgham Ismail: Ventured forward as usual although had little impact on the game and was caught out of position too often. 5/10 Ahmed Yasin: The hero of the Australia game had one of his worst performances in an Iraq shirt; didn’t manage to get past any of the Saudi full- backs and his final ball was extremely poor. 4/10 Saad Abdul-Amir: As usual worked extremely hard in midfield winning the ball back numerous times and trying to spark some creative play whenever possible.

Didn’t have loads to do but did everything that was asked of him. 7/10 Dhurgham Ismail: Did really well offensively, getting past players and winning a few freekicks in dangerous positions, however was caught out of position defensively too often. 6/10 Rebin Sulaka: Fairly solid performance in only his fourth appearance, was very calm on the ball under pressure but could have been in a better position to cut out the cross which eventually led to the corner for Australia’s goal. 6/10 Ahmed Ibrahim: Did make a few good tackles and interceptions as well as nearly scoring at the other end, but didn’t get anywhere near the ball for Australia’s goal allowing a practically free header. 5/10 Ali Bahjat: Was quite solid and managed to get Iraq out of trouble with some important clearances, however perhaps didn’t need to concede the initial corner which led to Australia scoring. 6/10 Alaa Mhawi: Poor performance from the right back; totally lost his marker for the goal with no attempt at preventing the run and lost the ball too often in the opponent's half leaving the defence exposed. 5/10 Saad Abdul-Amir: Did really well to pressure the Australian midfielders and defenders, helping to win the ball high up the pitch.
