2014 ANNUAL VISITATION REPORT Giant Springs State Park 2014 Montana State Parks Montana State Parks had a record 2.255 million visits in 2014, which was the 75th anniversary of the park system. Statewide visitation is up 3% from 2013 and up 29% for the 10-year period. North Central Region (Great Falls) had the highest overall visitation with over 593,000 visits, and Giant Springs State Park had the highest visitation of all state parks with over 316,000 visits. Peak season visitation was also the highest on record, with over 1.68 million visits, up 3% from 2013. Visitation Tables 8 2014 Annual Visitation Report 2014 Annual Visitation Report JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2014 The following is a summary of the Montana State Parks 2014 annual visitation, as well as comparisons with 2013 data, and visitation trends. Total statewide visitation is 2,255,038 visits, up 3% from 2013. 5-Year Trend (2010 to 2014): State Parks visitation is up 14%. 10-Year Trend (2005 to 2014): State Parks visitation is up 29%. STATEWIDE VISITATION In 2014, Montana State Parks had the most visits in a single year over the past decade—surpassing the previous record in 2013. The busiest month in 2014 was July with over 516,000 visits, up 9% from 2013 and the highest single month visits over the last five years. On average, there were about 187,000 visits per month, the highest average on record. Giant Springs State Park (316,483 visits) 2. Lake Elmo State Park (163,265 visits) 3. Cooney State Park (160,070 visits) 4. Spring Meadow Lake State Park (141,727 visits) 5. Wayfarers State Park (133,473 visits) Residency Trends Resident and non-resident visitation is estimated based on a ratio of the total visits, which was established for each park through field sampling. From 2013 to 2014, resident visitation slightly increased from 80% of visits to 81% of visits. As total visitation has been increasing from 2010 to 2014, the number of non-resident visits has also been increasing. In 2010, 16% of the visits (316,000 visits) were from non-residents. In 2014, that increased to 19% of visits, or over 428,000 visits—a 36% increase in non-resident visitation from 2010 to 2014. West Central Region had the largest increase in visitation at 31% over 2013 levels. North Central Region had the highest visitation by residents at 88% and the highest day use at 93% of visits. Southwest Region had the highest visitation of non-residents at 24%, while West Central Region had the highest overnight use at 36% of visits. The 2014 peak season saw a total of 1,680,121 visits, up 3% from 2013. Peak season visitation is also up 21% over the five year period from 2010 to 2014, making it the highest visitation from May to September over the last five years. The season’s busiest month was July, with over 516,000 visits statewide—the biggest single monthly visitation recorded. Northwest Region (Kalispell) parks had the highest visitation during the summer months with over 455,000 visits, followed by North Central Region (Great Falls) parks with over 395,000 visits.
