From the desk of Mr. Michael Malmberg, District Superintendent As the new school year begins soon, I want to thank all of you for the many ways you work with us all year long on behalf of our school. All of us at Pillager Public Schools value the partnership we have with you and appreciate your support and involvement. Pillager Public School is a great place to be and we are extremely proud of our students, staff and the facilities we have.

New Curriculum, Technology, Report Cards, and Personalized Learning Plans Our district continues to expand our curriculum by adding new course offerings by expanding CTE offerings and CIS courses as well as other elective courses. We continue to increase in technology as a focus of our school. Our staff and district will continue to maintain the large task of standardized grading and reporting to help ensure our students success by improving our classroom instruction and informing our families of relevant and much needed feedback to better meet the needs of our students. The middle school report card was updated this past year to be aligned with the elementary school standards based grading. The next phase in the elementary school has begun with implementing personalized learning plans to meet the needs of each individual learner.

Construction Completed The construction project that began over two years ago will be completed this fall. The maintenance, remodeling of classroom areas, and additional classrooms and vocational areas along with the new “CTC Center” will be finished when school starts this fall. Our learning facility will be one of the best in the area. I am proud of the work that has went into the planning of the project and how it all came together for the community of Pillager and the students that it will serve. We will continue to monitor the maintenance of our facility and to meet the ever changing educational needs of our students in all areas of our facility, whether it be in the classroom or extra-curricular. Our goal is to provide the best possible facility at the lowest tax impact.

CTC Center Grand Opening As you have seen on another page of the newsletter, I am extremely excited for the grand opening of the new “CTC Center” this fall for the school and for our community. Our goal is to provide our community with a facility that will bring opportunities for people to attend events right here in our own back yard at a reasonable cost. I hope you all will be as excited to see some of those events as we bring them to you.

Have a great school year! Welcome Back! “Go Huskies” Facility Services Manager, John Gordon WOW! Summer has flown by and we are preparing for the school year to begin. We have a lot of exciting things coming this fall at Pillager School. The current phase of construction is coming to an end and the custodial crew has been working on getting the facilities ready all around the school. We also are focusing on the new CTC Center, our new 400 seat school auditorium.

The crew has been cleaning, waxing and preparing the rooms, halls, locker rooms, track shed, and gyms for the first day of school. I continue to be proud of the work and devotion our staff gives each summer making our school sparkle and gleam.

CTC Center News The CTC Center Auditorium is almost ready for you! Our Grand Opening will be September 24th through September 25th. On Friday evening, we kick off the celebration with Kat Perkins, a former Voice runner-up and Minnesota native, show time is at 7:30 p.m. She will also be sharing her story and speaking to our students on Friday afternoon about her life and challenges. Our first graders will get to experience their new rooms this year on the eastside of the elementary gym. The windows have been updated on the south side of the school and a few on the north. Lastly, we have a new agricultural room with an updated and enlarged metal shop with the relocated wood shop equipment being moved. The new wood shop has been completed along with easier access to the greenhouses. You will notice landscaping and northwest and northeast parking lot changes as well. We are excited and looking forward to a great 2021-2022 school year.

NEW STAFF TO PILLAGER SCHOOLS

Alissa Langan, Early Childhood Special Education My husband, Zach, and I are originally from Thief River Falls and have lived in Brainerd for 10 years. Zach is a nurse at St. Joseph’s. We have four kiddos (three girls and one boy, ages 3-8). I originally graduated from MSUM with a degree in early childhood special education and will wrap up my master’s in special education with a specialty in vision impairments in July. I began my career as an early intervention teacher in Brainerd, then stayed home a couple of years with babies and to continue my own schooling; I spent last year as a teacher for vision impaired students in Park Rapids (wonderful experience but kind of a long drive, I’m happy to be working closer to home again!). This summer our family is attempting to raise chickens and look forward to a California road trip.

Shania Holst, 1st grade I grew up in Staples, MN and attended Bemidji State University for Elementary Education, where I graduated in the spring of 2019. This will be my first time teaching first grade and I can’t wait for this new adventure. I love being outside with family and friends. In my free time, I enjoy fishing, hunting, and hanging out at the lake. I can’t wait to be a part of the Pillager School and call myself a “Husky”!

Erin Foster, Kindergarten I was born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota and attended Minnesota State University Moorhead for my undergrad. I have a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and a M.A. in Educational Leadership. I have five years of teaching experience in both preschool and kindergarten combined. Some of my favorite things include peanut butter, being outdoors, and spending time with my family! I am looking forward to being a part of the Pillager School District. Go Huskies!

Jacob Russell, High School Mathematics I grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area and then later attended Central Lakes College and Minnesota State University, Mankato. Throughout my college career I played basketball at CLC, managed the men’s basketball team at Mankato, and grew immensely in my knowledge of mathe- matics and the educational field. Since college I have moved back to Brainerd with my wife and our corgi, Auggie. I love spending time on the lake fishing, working with athletes, and relaxing with family and friends. I am excited to start at Pillager and become a part of the incredible community that surrounds the school

Kanyaphat (Kanya) Takoon, CIS Math Instructor I am originally from Bangkok, Thailand where I previously worked as a high school mathematics teacher at a private boarding school and a British International School for many years. I then obtained my PhD in Development Education and began working with Thailand's Ministry of Education in developing innovative and creative learning programs for educators and students. I’m married to a native Minnesotan, Brent Zeise, who was working internationally at that time in Thailand. We then moved and worked together around the world for a few years before locating here in Minnesota. Personally, I enjoy traveling and cooking, especially Asian cuisine. I am very excited to be part of the Pillager com- munity and am looking forward to the new school year.

Lea Frank, 5th & 6th grade Language Arts I have taught 4th & 5th grade in the ROCORI School District the past 12 years. My family and I recently moved to Nisswa. Having grown up in the Brainerd area, I am excited to be moving back to where my roots began. I am looking forward to working with students and staff in Pillager.

Kirsten Sundquist, 3rd grade I am very excited to be a part of the Pillager team. My husband and I moved up to Pillager two years ago and I have been subbing in the district the last two years. Before moving up here, I taught in Medford/Owatonna for 3 years and Saint Cloud for 3 years. Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors and baking.

Andrea Langhoff, Middle School Social Studies I was born and raised in central Wisconsin and first attended college at University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Following my time there I traveled to Delaware to be a full-time nanny and moved with the family to metro-Detroit. I called Michigan home for seven years before moving to Brain- erd, Minnesota. While working in youth ministry I decided the time was right to return to school to pursue a career in education. St. Cloud State University, student teaching at Brainerd High School, and working as a long-term substitute at Royalton Middle School has me gearing up with anticipation and excitement to join the Pillager teaching team. During my free time I enjoy hiking, traveling to attend concerts, visiting family in Wisconsin, and of course, rooting for the Packers. I look forward to getting to know Pillager Middle School students, families, and the greater community.

Marqus Flicek, High School Social Studies I am a graduate of St. Cloud State University. I will teach U.S History, World History and Current Events at Pillager and I am excited to get to know all the students and faculty at the school. I cannot wait to get started!

Ryan Krominga, Director of Teaching & Learning Originally from Southern Minnesota, I attended Minnesota State University where I graduated with a degree in Math Education. I started my education career as a Math Teacher, teaching middle and high school math. Since then, I've been a Principal, Curriculum Coordinator and Director of Teaching & Learning. I'm married to my amazing wife, Lynn and we have one rambunctious son, Henry. I'm thrilled to be joining the Pillager team!

Mary Schlangen, English Interventionist I'm excited to start the intervention program for ELA at Pillager Middle School. I have been teaching for 16 years both in Wisconsin and Minne- sota. My husband, son, and I have lived in the Pillager area for 11 years. We live on a small hobby farm just south of Pillager. We enjoy being outdoors, active in the community, and spending time with others. We are excited to be part of the Huskies Team!

2021-22 School Year at Pillager High School will in a NEW sense of normal for the students and staff at Pillager High School and Husky Nation. A sense of routine will come with a return to in-person learning without masks (hopefully), having the customary celebrations and events that come with the high school experience like pep fests, dances, students sections at games, field trips, using lockers, etc...I’m proud of how our students, staff, and community persevered through the last year and a half, and I know that we will no longer take events we treasure for granted.

Middle School Principal, Wade Mortenson

We are ready for the 2021-2022 school year! Once again, the summer has flown by. A lot of work has been put in this summer to make sure we get off to a great start. As always, we addressed some areas we feel will benefit our students once they enter the hallways this fall. This past year provided us with many obstacles, but it also allowed us to grow in many areas of learning, both academically and socially. As a staff, we feel very confident and prepared for the upcoming school year. We are also very excited to welcome some new faces to the MS team! This spring/summer we were very fortunate to add some very qualified and energetic individuals to the MS staff. They are ready to start building positive relationships with our students. As you page through this newsletter, please make sure to read about our Middle School Transition Open House for all incoming 5th graders, and all new to the district 6th-8th graders being held on August 25th. This will be in addition to the building wide open house on September 1. As mentioned above...we are ready...we are prepared...and most important of all...we are excited for another great year here at Pillager Middle School. As always, I welcome any questions you may have, please give me a call or shoot me an email.

We look forward to seeing you on August 25th!!!

PRIDE TIME for the Middle School

All middle school students will have the opportunity to participate in a PRIDE TIME Period each day this school year. During PRIDE TIME, students will enjoy character education lessons related to a variety of topics. This is also a perfect time to com- plete missing work, relearn material, or retake a test. A wide variety of enrichment options will also be available related to all content areas. For example, students can use PRIDE TIME to prepare for the annual Husky Spelling Bee, work on a Science Fair project, prepare for a Math Masters competition, study for the 8th grade National Geographic Geography Bee, perfect a work of art, or simply read their favorite book. Certainly, PRIDE TIME will be a tremendously beneficial time for all students.

Our school will again be offering AVID classes, this year to all eighth and sixth graders. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nationally recognized program that equips teachers and schools with what they need to help students succeed during their middle school and high school careers. For one period a day, or during PRIDE TIME, students in this course will receive additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in other more rigorous courses.

AVID students will learn how to learn. Note-taking, studying, and organizing assignments are all skills that must be learned and practiced and students in AVID will be guided through their high school/middle school years.

Elementary Principal, Josh Smith “In the rush to return to normal, let’s use this time to consider which parts of normal are worth rushing back to. “ - Dave Hollis

There is no question that most of us wish for a return to “normal” this school year. But what type of “normal” do we want? As crazy as the last school year seemed to be, we found a number of things that worked well and, dare I say, maybe even better than we could have imagined?

As we look to the upcoming school year, are there unknowns? Yes. Are there going to be challenges? Yes. Will we continue to face these unknowns and challenges with a continued urgency to improve what we do and achieve even more positive results for students? Absolutely.

My pledge to the staff, students, and families of the Pillager Elementary School community is that we will continue to grow, learn, be resilient, and strive to focus on what we can control to create a learning environment that provides each student with every opportunity to be successful academically, socially, and emotionally.

So, while we charge ahead into the school year with a renewed energy and desire a for “normal”, may we remember all that we have overcome and use what we learned to make Pillager Elementary School an even better place to be!

Assessments Academic progress toward grade level standards in Kindergarten through 4th grade will be monitored in a number of ways. An assessment tool that will be used is Star360. STAR assessments are computer-adaptive tests. Computer-adaptive tests continually adjust the difficulty of each child’s test by choosing each test question based on the child’s previous re- sponse. On average, students will complete the STAR tests in approximately 20 minutes.

Students will also be assessed throughout the school year using Jan Richardson’s “Next Steps in Guided Reading” frame- work. These assessments will be given by classroom teachers and our Title I staff.

The results of these assessments, Star360 and guided reading, will be used to guide instruction and interventions.

New Faces and New Places

You are likely to notice new faces at Pillager Elementary School this year. We are excited to welcome these individuals and we are certainly excited to see the positive impact each of them bring to the students, faculty, and community of Pillager!

Alissa Anderson, Early Childhood Special Education Elisa Ingberg, Kindergarten Erin Foster, Kindergarten Shania Holst, 1st Grade Kirsten Sundquist, 3rd Grade Ashley Watzke, 4th Grade Keanna Thompson, 4th Grade Darla Marcy, Math Interventionist Kori Anderson, Math Interventionist Shana Nguyen, Reading Corps

Catalyst (Formerly ENVoY) Catalyst (formerly ENVoY) is a systematic approach of using non-verbal skills to manage students with influence rather than power. Seven patterns of non-verbal skills have been identified in teachers who have excellent classroom manage- ment. Teachers who systematically utilize the full range of non-verbal management skills are able to reinforce consistent and fair parameters while preserving their relationships with each student, regardless of unique learning styles or cultural back- grounds.

The Pillager PTO is back! We are looking for new members to help support our elementary students, teachers & staff. Keep an eye out for updates on our Facebook page.

ANNUAL SCHOOL NOTICES

Pesticide Notice A Minnesota state law requires that schools inform parents and guardians if they apply certain pesticides on school property. State law also requires that you be told that the long-term health effects on children from the application of such pesticides or the class of chemicals to which they belong may not be fully understood. The Pillager School District does not apply pesticides on school property unless all other measures have failed to control the problem. In the event that insect control sprays and dusts need to be applied, it will only be done when students are absent from the area, and will be out of the area until any spray and any odor has dissipated. If you would like to be notified prior to a chemical application, please contact Tod Pelarski at the District Office.

2021-2022 School Year Asbestos Notification Pillager Public Schools has a stringent inspection and management program for all asbestos containing building materials. As a matter of policy, the district will maintain a safe and healthful environment for our community’s youth and employees. Every three years, all buildings owned and leased by the district are re-inspected by an EPA accredited inspector for asbestos content. Every six months, all materials containing asbestos are surveyed. Any materials needing repair or removal are done so under our asbestos operation and maintenance program safely and responsibly.

The Pillager School District has a list of locations and types of asbestos containing materials found in our buildings. The last 3 year AHERA was: 7/31/19 and the next due is July of 2022. The last 6 month Asbestos Surveillance was: 3/8/21. A copy of the asbestos management plan is available for review in the district office. Questions related to the plan should be directed to please contact Missy Berry at the District Office.

ANNUAL NOTIFICATION OF RIGHTS

2021-2022 Indoor Air Quality Notification

The Pillager School District is proud to be taking a leadership role in providing a safe, comfortable, and productive environment for our students and staff so that we achieve our core mission – educating students. Our school will follow the EPA guidelines to improve our indoor air quality (IAQ) by pre- venting as many IAQ problems as possible, and by quickly responding to any IAQ problems that may arise. Good indoor air quality requires an ongoing commitment by everyone in our school because each of us daily makes decisions and performs activities that affect the quality of the air we breathe. Each room in every building will be evaluated for indoor air quality. Teachers, building engineers and admin- istrators will be trained on IAQ factors.

Our IAQ Coordinator, Missy Berry, will follow up on any IAQ problems you may have. Missy has agreed to administer the IAQ Management Plan, which includes taking a team leadership role, coordinating emergency response, and serving as our information resource on IAQ. Missy may be contacted at 746-2102. The school newsletter will carry progress reports as we learn more about indoor air quality in our school.

State law requires that we must notify you annually of rights concerning Student Directory contents and release of information. The following is School Policy 515-24 which reviews your legal rights. “Directory information” means information contained in an education record of a student which would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. It includes, but is not limited to: the student’s name, address, telephone listing, electronic mail address, photograph, date and place of birth, major field of study, dates of attendance, grade level, enrollment status (i.e. full-time or part-time), weight and height of member of athletic teams, degrees, honors and awards received and the most recent educational agency or institution attended.
