As a boy, the arranger would visit Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut and hear the shantymen there singing and playing concertina. Years later, he took up the concertina as well, and out of homesickness began playing this music. These songs were sung a cappella and used by sailors to set a rhythm for specific tasks on a ship that needed to be performed in unison. Though shanties were very practical, most are very beautiful melodies as well. These two shanties were chosen for their lyricism and arranged for string orchestra in a way that seemed fitting for a love of the sea. About the Arranger John Mock is an artist, and the ocean and its coasts are his muse. From his native New England to the shores of Ireland and Scotland, John captures in music and story the heritage of the sea. Whether appearing solo or with a symphony orchestra, John shares this heritage through his captivating concert presentations which include original instrumental compositions performed on guitar, concertina, mandolin, and tin whistle. Audiences are charmed not only by John’s music, but also by his narration and storytelling, which bring to life the characters and places upon which the music is based. A multimedia version of the concert is also available in which John’s own photography is projected, providing a beautiful backdrop for the music. Widely sought after as a composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, John has worked with such notable artists as the Dixie Chicks, James Taylor, Dolly Parton, Nanci Griffith, Maura O’Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, and Mark O’Connor. John’s credits as composer and featured soloist include performances with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, the Nexus Chamber Orchestra, the Nashville Philharmonic, the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra, and the National Orchestra of Ireland. It was written for two friends, known since college, who were having their first baby, whom they named Joshua. Joshua is now in his thirties and is a music educator on the West Coast. I thought I lost the tape, and beat myself up for a while about it but had to just give it up, though I kept an empty cassette box around with Johnsmith's name on it, it was all I could find. Then my transcriber (who types up the interviews from the cassettes) called me one day many months later, saying, "Did you just send me this tape on Johnsmith?" I said no, that I thought I'd lost the tape many months ago and was very happy to hear she had it. "Yeah, we moved the furniture around in my office, it must have fallen behind something..." Just so happened that the three things I'd lost in the last 6 months all turned up that week: the Johnsmith tape, a set of keys turned up in a jacket I only wear when it rains, and a lost song I couldn't remember how it went turned up on an unmarked tape. I thought about how hard I'd gone on myself about each of those lost things, how could I lose these important things, etc. They were lost months apart, and then all turned up in the same week. I try now not to beat myself up about stuff like that anymore if I can help it; it's just the flip side of an ego trip, and it's pointless. I called Johnsmith to tell him the news and to ask some new questions to update the information.

Once, while visiting the island of Inisheer (County Galway), he heard the story of St. Ghobnait, also known as the Patron Saint of Ballyvourney. A beekeeper by trade, she spent her time in West Clare before fleeing from enemies (apparently from a family feud) to the island of Inishere. She eventually settled in Ballyvourney, County Cork. The escape route she followed was one she had seen in a vision. Back in the sixth century, bees and honey were considered a sacred part of healing, and St. Ghobnait was well known for healing the sick with the honey she harvested. In composing this piece, the composer began by turning on a tape recorder (this was the 1980s) and just started improvising phrases. These were then woven together throughout a four-part texture, filling out the composition. Working on cars is nothing new for Steve Barnes’ students. Enrolled in the Automotive Technology Program at La Porte County Career & Tech Edu- cation Center, they plunge through every facet of a vehicle so by the time they graduate, they have what it takes to enter their desired profession. The vehicles that serve as their test subjects, however, typically are those brought in by fam- ily members, Michigan City Area Schools staff or Barnes himself. This year, however, was different. A former stu- dent made a rather interesting donation: a 1996 BMW 318ti.
