S3M-7898# Duncan McNeil: 30th Anniversary of the Lee Jeans Sit-in—That the Parliament remembers the 240 women who staged what it sees as a historic sit-in at the Lee Jeans factory in Greenock 30 years ago, beginning on 5 February 1981; notes that the workers barricaded themselves into the canteen for seven months in protest at the decision to close the factory; salutes the workers for capturing the imagination of the whole country and achieving a landmark victory against a US multinational; wishes the former convener, Helen Monaghan, and machinists, Margaret Wallace and Catherine Robertson, well for the 30th anniversary reunion event that they have organised, and considers the Lee Jeans sit-in to be an inspiration to women workers all over the world.

On Tuesday, the Scottish Government published “Scotland’s Digital Future—Infrastructure Action Plan”, which sets out our ambition and commitment and the steps that we will take to deliver world- class and future-proof digital infrastructure throughout Scotland by 2020, with a step change by 2015. It also sets out our intention to move forward at a rapid pace. The action plan is about delivering transformational change in the quality and coverage of internet and mobile access across Scotland, enabling people to connect from their homes, at work and while on the move. I hope that that will include an improved service in this building. The scale of transformation will require significant investment and the Scottish Government is committed to sourcing and securing that investment for Scotland. Delivery of the plan will require strong partnership working across the private, public and third sectors, and a willingness to collaborate to realise our shared vision.

    NORTH EAST SCOTLAND TRANSPORT PARTNERSHIP – 16 February 2011 8 Information Bulletin Purpose of Report The purpose of this report is to provide information and updates for the Board on a number of matters not requiring decision. Scottish Transport Awards entries This year’s Scottish Transport Awards will be held earlier in the year, in June in Glasgow. This short turnaround from last year’s awards ceremony has meant that it has not been possible to plan and programme potential entries as early as normal, but nevertheless it was felt that some of the good work ongoing in the region was eligible for putting together good quality bids. Nestrans has submitted an application under the categories of Partnership (Appendix 1) and Cycling (Appendix 2), as well as in Marketing in association with our Getabout partners (Appendix 3). A joint submission has also been submitted with First in Aberdeen in relation to the Real Time Bus website (Appendix 4). Response from Traffic Commissioner Following the decision at the last Board meeting to write to the Traffic Commissioner expressing concern at the conclusions contained in her letter to First Aberdeen, particularly the criticism of Aberdeen City Council’s commitment to public transport, a response has now been received from Ms Aitken. She has declined to accept the offer of meeting with the Board and states that she cannot enter into discussion following a judgment on a hearing. Aberdeen City Council’s Environment, Planning & Infrastructure Committee also considered her judgment and expressed concerns, emphasising that over £1 million has been invested in bus priorities and schemes and that the Council remains committed through LABOF and the Bus Punctuality Improvement Partnership to improving bus operations.
