The one thing each of celebrating another successful year for Training Ship these young people have in common is that it was Cossack. I have taken over a strong unit from Lt (SCC) Southwark Sea Cadets who gave them a great head start Bradbury RNR, who stood down as Commanding Officer in life. Southwark Sea Cadets earlier this year, after eleven illustrious years. At Training Ship Cossack, we are all proud of those cadets and young people who have gone on to succeed in later The unit itself is undergoing huge refurbishments and life, and we hope that this will continue for many more modernisation, a joint venture between the training team years to come. led by myself and the management trustees led by their Chairperson. We could not however have achieved any of this without the continuing support of our unit sponsors, the Worshipful Into our 75th Year, the unit, originally founded during Company of Scientific Instrument Makers, The Tallow warship week in July 1942, as 2 individual units, Chandlers, HMS Cossack Association, and so many more. “Southwark” and “Walworth” before merging in 1964 to Thank you to all of you who have contributed to our become one unit under the name Southwark. successes in 2017 and I look forward to celebrating even more success in the coming years. Since 1942 we have achieved amazing things with the young people who have come through our doors, they Sub Lieutenant (SCC) James Thompson RNR have gone on to enjoy careers in the Royal and Commanding Officer Merchant Navy, become top water sports instructors in Training Ship Cossack their discipline, moved halfway around the world, and 31 December 2017 some have even gone off to University to enjoy the 3 SOUTHWARK SEA CADETS UNIT REVIEW Unit Review 2017 I am delighted to announce that Southwark Sea Cadet Unit have been awarded an Efficiency Burgee for 2017. This year saw our score of 85 beating last year by 9 points. This is testament to the hard work and “can do” attitude of the Cadets, Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers and Unit Management Team Trustees attached to Southwark. District Officers Summary TS Cossack has, on the whole, had a very good year. The unit has improved in most of the lower scoring areas from last year’s review, specifically on areas A2 and A3. It has been very pleasing to see the staff team at Southwark offering support outside of the unit environment. The unit will want to look at the retention of cadets in the coming review year; although the unit retention is low, the unit’s recruitment and overall numbers are up on last year’s RNP. Once again, Southwark have exceeded the Annual Boating hours target with 98% of the cadets achieving waterborne qualifications. This is a testament to the well planned and executed training schedule for the unit. The unit now has a date in place of the 1st August for the handover of Command to SLT James Thompson. This will be an exciting time for the Ship’s Company and District look forward to seeing TS Cossack continue to provide an ever evolving cadet experience. District would like to take this opportunity to thank Lt (SCC) David Bradbury RNR for what will be just shy of 11 years Commanding TS Cossack. Lt Cdr (SCC) G Tolley RNR – District Officer London Southern District Sea Cadets Area Officers Summary A well-oiled Unit was on display when I visited to conduct TS Cossacks 2017 Unit Review. The Unit has clearly had a good year and has managed to achieve progression in many areas during the Review period, evidenced by 11 out of the 21 sections recording an increase in score. UR on Westminster is reporting some impressive scores, with 12 of the 21 sections scoring 5 and another 5 sections returning a score of 4, this leaving only 4 sections sitting at 3 or less. Southwark cadets benefit from a great HQ building which is looked after well with all notices and information being up-to-date. Whilst they are some way from any water, this has not stopped them getting cadets afloat, reflected in their boating hours sitting at 32.28. On visiting the classes, it was clear to see that the cadets are doing well at TS Cossack, all seemed engaged and happy to discuss what they enjoyed most about Sea Cadetting, and indeed what they have planned for the remainder of the year. The committee support the unit well and seem to have a good handle on unit finances and fundraising. All areas are compliant with all 3 audits achieving the top score of 5. This year will see a change of OiC for the Unit with Lt Bradbury handing over the reins to S/Lt Thompson on 1st August once he has completed both the JOSC and CTC courses back-to-back in July. This handover signifies an exciting new chapter for Southwark SCU which should be embraced. My thanks must go to Lt Bradbury who has shown nothing but dedication and commitment to Southwark SCU over the last 10+ years as OiC, with many cadets having benefitted directly from his guiding influence. His remaining time must now be spent guiding and training S/Lt Thompson through the handover period, hopefully remaining on hand for the new OiC to call upon into the future. To summarise, TS Cossack remains a solid Unit offering a great Sea Cadet experience to its cadets, this is testament to the adult team who are pulling in the same direction, BZ’s to you all and keep up the great work.
