Vol. 4, No. 4, 2019, pp. 93-102. doi: 10.11648/j.ijee.20190404.13 Received : October 10, 2019; Accepted : November 14, 2019; Published : December 4, 2019 Abstract: The status of Agboju, Ajegunle, Topo and Gbaji water bodies in Badagry Division of Lagos State, Nigeria was evaluated between April and November 2018 in order to determine the suitability of the ecosystem to biota and safety of the aquatic resources for human consumption. Some environmental variables such as alkalinity, temperature, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), conductivity, total dissolved solid (TDS), carbon (iv) oxide (CO2), total hardness, chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, phosphate, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, salinity, sulphate and nitrate, and some heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and Cr) in water, sediment, aquatic plant (Eichhornia crassipes) and fish (Ethmalosa fimbriata) were measured using standard procedures.

Email address: [email protected] Abstract Some decades ago, it would have seemed absurd to question the significance of traditional marriage among the Awori-Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria, as it was considered central to the organization of adult life. However, social change has far reaching effects on African traditional life. For instance, the increased social acceptance of pre-marital cohabitation, pre-marital sex and pregnancies and divorce is wide spread among the Yoruba people of today. This however appeared to have replaced the norms of traditional marriage; where marriage is now between two individuals and not families. This research uncovers what marriage values of the Yoruba were and how these values had been influenced overtime. The qualitative method of data collection was used. Data was collected and analyzed utilizing the content analysis and ethnographic summary techniques. The study revealed that modernization, education, mixture of cultures and languages, inter-marriage and electronic media have brought about changes in traditional marriage, along with consequences such as; drop in family standard, marriage instability, weak patriarchy system, and of values and customs. Despite the social changes, marriage remains significant value for individuals, families and in Yoruba society as a whole. Keywords: Traditional values, marriage, social change, Yoruba. INTRODUCTION The practice of marriage is apparently one of the most interesting aspects of human culture.

PREFACE This publication is an attempt to meet the continuous demand for statistical data on Local Government/Local Council Development Areas of Lagos State. It features data on ten (10) key Sectors of development comprising Demography, Manpower, Education, Health, Economy, Housing & Community Amenities, Social Protection, Environmental Protection, Recreation, Religion & Culture and Public Order & Safety. The data are provided for Year 2012 and covers all the Twenty (20) Local Government and Thirty seven (37) Local Council Development Areas in the State to facilitate easy comparison among the Local Government/Local Council Development Areas. The publication would be found useful by Researchers, Students, Planners, Policy Makers and all those who are interested in Local Government Statistics. The scope of the subsequent edition of this annual publication will continue to be widened to cover more Socio-Economic data on Local Government/Local Council Development Areas.     MUSIC EDUCATION AND MUSICAL ACTIVITIES IN LAGOS: THEN AND NOW *AdéOlúwa OKÙNADÉ Abstract This article is a historical excursion into the musical activities in Lagos from around 600 to 1800, which it classifies as the first phase, from around 1800 to 1914, the second period, and third period, from around 1914 up to date and how they have affected music education in the area. The study also highlights the roles played by some personalities in the evolution of music in Lagos. Keywords: Music education, Lagos, Musical activities Introduction To open the thrust of this paper with history of Lagos will not be out of place. Even when it is acknowledged that historians, ethnographers, and scholars from various disciplines have done justice to this in several publications through many outlets. Kunle Lawal, R. Ajetunmobi, I.A. Akinjogbin, and a lot more are reliable authorities in this field. However, it is still paramount to give a brief of the town because Lagos (or Lagos state) of today is seen as a cosmopolitan area where some ignorantly or mischievously utter statement like 'Lagos is no man's land'; this reason therefore calls for quick correction wherever one finds the opportunity. Lagos was not empty before the emergence of the progenitors of other Yorùbá ethnic groups like the Ìjèbú, Àwórì, and Ogu (Egun) which appear to have converged as synthesis of many layers of autochthones and early migrants from different parts of the interior. (Ajetunmobi, 2003:34). There are other Yorùbá dialects speaking sub groups in the state who through their ancestral links with founders of various settlements are referred to as settlers or true Lagosians.
