Iraq's 2007 Asian Cup Winning Squad: Where Are They Now?Iraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Iraq's 2007 Asian Cup Winning Squad: Where are they now? Exactly a decade on from the Iraq national football team producing the greatest moment in Iraqi sporting history, overcoming rivals Saudi Arabia to win Asia's most coveted trophy and bring joy to millions around the world, we commemorate the achievement by taking a look at what the men who achieved the impossible dream are up to now. GK: Noor Sabri The heroic keeper has played for nine Iraqi clubs since 2007, famously winning his first Iraqi Premier League with Naft Al-Wasat in 2015, saving three penalties in a shootout against former club Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in the final to secure the title for the newly-promoted side. He most recently played for Al-Minaa, and is now a free agent, having retired from international football last year. DF: Bassim Abbas The ‘Iraqi Roberto Carlos’ continued to be a key player for Iraq up until 2012; in 2009 he earned himself a move to Europe, playing in the Turkish Superligue with Diyarbakirspor and Konyaspor. Bassim’s success there led to Turkish sides increasingly scouting Iraqi talent, paving the way for Ali Adnan, Dhurgham Ismail, Ali Husni and Ali Faez to move there too. Bassim has since retired from football and is now an administrator at boyhood club Al-Talaba. DF: Jassim Mohammed Ghulam ‘The Beast’ enjoyed spells at Qatar, Iran and Jordan after the Asian Cup win before returning to Iraqi club Al- Quwa Al-Jawiya in 2009.

Iraq National Football TeamIraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Radhi Shenaishil announces final 23-man squad for WCQ Radhi Shenaishil has cut down his 38-man preliminary squad to 23 players ahead of Iraq's upcoming friendly with Iran and qualifying games with Australia and Saudi Arabia. Many of the fifteen omissions aren't that surprising - goalkeepers Fahad Talib, Ali Abdul-Hassan and Ali Yaseen are dropped, while defenders Ali Bahjat, Ali Lateef, Hussam Kadhim and Ahmed Abdul-Ridha have also been cut. Midfielders Hussein Ali, Mazen Fayadh and Osama Ali, and forwards Jassim Mohammed and Ali Akla are the other players who have expectedly been omitted. There are only three surprises in terms of dropped players. Arguably Iraq's best attacking player, Justin Meram, has had to withdraw from the squad due to fears over his status in the USA if he travels to Iran (where Iraq will play their game against Australia). Jawiya youngster Humam Tariq's place in the squad has been taken by Al-Zawraa's Amjad Kalaf, who is receiving his first call-up since the 2015 Asian Cup where he scored against the UAE. And the third surprising omission is that of midfielder Brwa Nouri - many fans wanted the Swedish-based player to start alongside Saad Abdul-Amir in midfield but it seems Radhi will keep faith in young midfielder Amjad Attwan. Some of the players in the squad, including the likes of Ali Adnan, Dhurgham Ismail and Ali Faez will not be available for the Iran friendly on 18 March due to club commitments, and will join the team a couple of days later.

Iraq National Football TeamIraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Radhi Shenaishil announces 38-man preliminary squad for WCQ There are three notable absences from Radhi Shenaishil's recently announced preliminary squad. Osama Rashid, who recently moved to the Portuguese second division, was expected by many to be given a chance in midfield but Radhi has continued to leave him out of the set-up. Ayman Hussein, whose goal qualified Iraq for the Olympics last year, is the top scorer of the Iraqi League this season and is on fire - but he misses out after picking up an injury recently. The third absentee isn't a surprise, but it still continues to be talked about by Iraqi fans and that is Yaser Kasim. Iraq's best player just two years ago is now nowhere to be seen in the national team and Radhi has stated that Yaser does not have the passion to play for the country anymore. Radhi has called up a number of players who have been playing well in the Iraqi League, such as young prodigy Hussein Ali and defender Ahmed Abdul-Ridha, while there are recalls for attackers Hammadi Ahmed and Amjad Kalaf and a questionable first call-up for Dutch fourth division player Ali Akla. This 38-man squad will soon be cut down to 23 players in time for the Australia and Saudi Arabia games. Here is the preliminary squad in full: Name Position Club Mohammed Gassid (captain) Goalkeeper Al-Zawraa Mohammed Hameed Goalkeeper Al-Shorta Ali Abdul-Hassan Goalkeeper Al-Talaba Jalal Hassan Goalkeeper Naft Al-Wasat Fahad Talib Goalkeeper Al-Quwa

Iraq National Football TeamIraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia History is made as Iraq beat Jordan in the first game at Basra Sports City After four long years of watching their team play their games in the likes of Qatar, UAE and Iran, fans of the Iraq national team were finally able to see their beloved team in their own homeland as Basra International Stadium hosted its first ever international game. The opponents for the historic day were Jordan, a team that Iraq had played on 49 occasions prior to today's game. While Iraq had the superior record in total, it wasn't too long ago that Jordan beat Iraq 3-0 in a friendly, so the Lions of Mesopotamia knew that securing victory would be a difficult task. The stadium began filling with eager, excited fans hours before kickoff, with the Iraqi FA working together with the Ministry of Youth and Sport to put together a true showpiece occasion. The pitch surface was in pristine condition and the security levels were high; those in charge knew the day had to go smoothly if Iraq wanted to persuade FIFA not only to continue allowing Iraq to host friendlies but also to hopefully allow competitive games to be held in the country too. At long last, the game kicked off to a huge roar from the 60,000 fans in attendance, all waving Iraqi and Jordanian flags. Iraq's interim manager Basim Qasim decided to field quite a few players from his club side Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in the starting lineup in an unfamiliar formation for the national team.

Iraq National Football TeamIraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia FIFA World Cup Qualifier: Saudi Arabia 1-0 Iraq - Player Ratings Mohammed Hameed: Not a game to remember for Hameed. Distribution was poor, gifting Saudi Arabia with a big chance. Should’ve done much better with the goal and was rescued by Ahmed Ibrahim after letting a tame shot slip past him. 5/10 Alaa Mhawi: Tried to get forward as much as possible and was one of the only Iraqis willing take players on and make forward passes. However his tendency to push high up the field did leave him out of position on a few occasions. 6/10 Ahmed Ibrahim: Made some exceptionally well-timed tackles and broke down the majority of Saudi Arabia’s attacks. Saved Iraq from going down a goal down in the first half with a last ditch clearance off the line. He also had Iraq’s best chance at the other end. 7/10 Rebin Sulaka: Broke down a lot of Saudi Arabia attacks with some strong tackling, however lost his position too often and made a few wayward passes that were lucky not to be punished. 6/10 Dhurgham Ismail: Ventured forward as usual although had little impact on the game and was caught out of position too often. 5/10 Ahmed Yasin: The hero of the Australia game had one of his worst performances in an Iraq shirt; didn’t manage to get past any of the Saudi full- backs and his final ball was extremely poor. 4/10 Saad Abdul-Amir: As usual worked extremely hard in midfield winning the ball back numerous times and trying to spark some creative play whenever possible.

Iraq National Football TeamIraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Iraq 1-1 Japan IRAQ EARN ENCOURAGING DRAW WITH JAPAN THANKS TO MAHDI KAMIL GOAL Basim Qasim's Iraq scored a second half equaliser through midfielder Mahdi Kamil to secure a deserved point against Asian giants and group leaders Japan on Tuesday. Iraq started the game in a 4-5-1 formation, with Swedish Cup winner Brwa Nouri finally getting a start in midfield alongside Saad Abdul-Amir, with Mahdi Kamil and Ahmed Yasin on the wings to support Alaa Abdul-Zahra and Mohanad Abdul-Raheem up top. It was the strongest possible lineup given the injuries to Dhurgham Ismail and Ali Husni, and there were no complaints from Iraqi fans on that front. But they were complaining for another reason within ten minutes as Iraq went 1-0 down from a Yuya Osako header - it was déjà vu for Iraqi supporters as the Lions of Mesopotamia have been conceding headers from set pieces for years, including in their last home qualifying game against Australia. Iraq responded well though, and could have equalised in the first half but Mahdi Kamil's header sailed way over the bar. Iraq dominated possession in the second half and finally broke through the Japanese defence in clumsy fashion on 73 minutes. Alaa Abdul-Zahra wriggled his way through the box but the ball seemed to be rolling comfortably into the arms of the Japanese 'keeper; Mohanad Abdul-Raheem's persistence ensured that didn't happen though as the ball eventually fell to the feet of Al-Shorta playmaker Mahdi Kamil who duly planted it into the back of the net.

Iraq Vs. Australia (FIFA World Cup Qualifier) - Match PreviewIraq National Team HOME RESULTS & FIXTURES VIDEOS FORUMS MORE The Liions off Mesopottamiia Iraq vs. Australia (FIFA World Cup Qualifier) - Match Preview Iraq's hopes of qualifying for their second ever FIFA World Cup are extremely slim. Having taken just three points out of fifteen thus far, Iraq will need a miracle even greater than their 2007 Asian Cup win if they want to take part in the showpiece tournament in Russia next year. Iraq's disastrous qualifying run started against Australia, and the Lions were comfortably beaten by two unanswered goals. That game made it clear that there was a significant gulf between the two sides. Iraq went on to perform much better in their next three games, but then put in their worst performance of all in their defeat to the UAE. This is Iraq's last chance to salvage something from this campaign. Lose against the country from Oceania and it's definitely all over for Iraq, but win against the Asian Cup champions and belief will be brought back into the side, giving us at least a slight chance of achieving the unthinkable. Our opponents Australia's campaign thus far has had ups and downs. They won their first two group games but their last three qualifying games have ended in draws, the most disappointing of them being a 2-2 tie with Thailand, whom Iraq crushed 4-0. Australia have named five uncapped players in their 23-man squad, but nonetheless the Socceroos are strong, particularly with the 2015 Asian Cup MVP, Massimo Luongo, up front.
